The baby was hidden well. Swaddled in old looking blankets it was shoved into the dusty gap between a wooden crest and the cold stone wall, in a dark room that seemed to have been abandoned quite some time ago. If it weren't for its wailing, it would never have been found.
Mera reached through the remaining cobwebs and tugged on the blanket until she managed to grab the child itself. Carefully she held it close to her chest, as she had learned it with the little ones back in the village. Gently rocking it back and forth, she peeled the cloth aside, to make sure, it could breath well.
It looked older than she had expected, a few months at least. A relief. Even the dark reddish hairlocks on its head looked clean and combed. Slowly she started to stroke down from the wrinkled forehead to the tiny tip of its nose. Startled, the baby stopped crying actively, and just huffed for air, starring at the hand infront of its face. How cute. But unlike the ones in her village, this one made no attempt to grab ahoöd of her fingers, didn't even move its own hands a bit, just stared, wide eyed, mouth open, huffing air.
After a few moments it seemed to have calmed down enough, that she could stop it, and inspect it more closely. The baby was in a surprisingly good state, as if it had been properly cared for until recently, but its whole body was shivering and ice cold to the touch. Pressing her palm flat on the small chest, she hoped to transfer some of her owen warmth to it. The baby had thankfully stopped making any sounds at all, and now its little, dark eyes fluttered a few times, until they stayed shut. But the breathing continuned steadily.
Was it asleep? Seemed like it. Probably for the best, but what now?
Mera just couldn't leave the little one here alone. Whoever shoved the baby in here may not come back. Or maybe they would, but with bad intentions. What if someone else found and ended it? There was too much risk, and even though they had only shared a short moment together just now, she felt it in her very core, that she could not leave this baby behind. Which left her with only one option. Determined she laid the small child on the ground beside her, and started to rearrange the contents of her travel bag, shoving the one piece of stinky cheese she had packed in her mouth. Better make it as comfortable a stay as possible, so it wouldn't start wailing again.
