King's Gear

Chapter 10 (Behind the mask 2)

Chapter 10 (Behind the mask 2)

Dec 10, 2025

Nader: "Anyway, the curse began but needed some time to complete. During this time, I was finally able to see the System; it's like the system you see often, but in addition, I can see a manifestation of Sekhmat there, and also I was restrained and couldn't move."

Maryam: "Why didn't Sekhmat do anything to stop Askam? Was he evil back then?"

Nader: "No, he was forced to execute the instructions, but he was telling me indirectly how to break my restraints. And when I succeeded, I became the main controller of the system, and Sekhmat was no longer forced to follow the old orders. We tried to stop Askam, but this fight wasn't fair. It's true that Sekhmat and Askam are very close in terms of physical strength, but the Devil's Gear that Askam possessed had the advantage in direct combat, so we were almost losing, until Marwan managed to stop him himself and took control from him."

Maryam: "And my father witnessed all this, but how does no one else remember it?"

Nader: "Askam was defeated, but that doesn't stop the curse. For the curse to stop, the one who started it, Askam, had to die."

His tone of voice changed slightly, and he said sadly: "My friend jumped from the top of the pyramid to stop the curse. Sekhmat tried to get the Devil's Gear afterwards, but he couldn't. The Devil's Gear was pulled into a maze under the pyramids, but it's dangerous, so he decided it wasn't worth it and the Gear was safe there anyway. In the end, a second curse was activated after stopping the first one, which made everyone within the area lose their memory."

Maryam: "And somehow my father didn't forget what happened, but what about cameras and devices?"

Nader: "When the first curse began, all devices stopped working."

Ali: "Jumped from the top of the pyramids? Is that enough? Our heart is supposed to be very strong; this collision can't destroy it. Ahmed did the same a little while ago and he's fine now."

Nader: "Maybe because we were young, or because he didn't have the Gear for long enough."

Youssef: "Either you made up this story or you're deceived, man. It's clear your friend knew about the Gear beforehand..."

Nader transformed into Sekhmat and shouted: "That's enough! We're going to rest now. Night has fallen and we haven't rested in two days." And he went to his hut that Maryam had made.

Youssef: "It seems they really are two people. The first one overlooks the details of his story, and the second is well aware of them and seems to be hiding them from the other."

Maryam, yawning: "I'll go to my castle too."

They all dispersed and each went to his room. When Youssef entered his hut, he found a pillow and a blanket that Nader had left for him. As he was preparing to sleep, Ali entered carrying his own blanket and pillow, placed them on the floor, and slept on them.

Youssef: "I think you have your own hut."

Ali: "Yes, but you know I don't like being alone. Anyway, how can I bother you while I'm asleep?"

A few minutes passed, with Ali lying on the floor staring at the hut's ceiling, then he said: "I envy all of you, guys. Your powers are much better than mine; Ahmed is learning to fly, Maryam can shape almost anything she wants, Nader has amazing healing abilities and he can get food and drink for himself in the winter cold without getting out of bed, and you at least can drink a cup of hot tea without it cooling in your hand."

Youssef: "Go to sleep, Ali."

After a few more minutes, Ali said: "Sekhmat has a much more epic story than any of us. Whenever I imagine myself in his place, my body shivers with excitement. The damn writer of our story didn't give us a story where we go on an adventure searching for pieces of the Gear; everything just happens to us on its own, we just try to adapt."

Youssef: "GO TO SLEEP, ALIIIIIIII!"

Ali took a deep breath, then said: "I never thought about it before, but after thinking deeply, I think I've figured out our teacher's identity... The Gear's colors: yellow, red, purple, blue... That settles it. Our teacher is actually a transformed mouse."

Youssef pulled a pillow and choked Ali with it, shouting: "Why don't you shut up, you damn bastard!!"

Ali struggled out from under him and said: "That's the Youssef I know. You seemed distracted since our battle with Omar, and you agreed with Ahmed a lot today, so I was worried about you; you and Ahmed are acting opposite of expectations. Ahmed regained his composure with unexpected speed, and you seem like you've lost your enthusiasm."

Youssef: "That bastard isn't composed at all, but he realizes that despite his weakness, the reason he's with us is that he's our leader. If he shows more weakness to us, we'll get bored of him and leave him; he isn't useful anyway, so I just gave him a chance, that's all."

Ali softened his voice and said: "Oh, I knew there was a compassionate human inside this monster. And what about you? Why do you seem distracted?"

Youssef sighed and said: "You know I don't talk about my past because I don't remember it in the first place. I don't remember anything before meeting the Teacher, but when I saw Omar wearing that strange suit, I felt like I had met him before, I mean before we met him the first time. Just looking at that suit angered me. That's been on my mind ever since, that's all."

Ali looked around left and right and said: "Do you hear that!?" Youssef was silent for a moment, then said: "That's impossible!"

They hurried out of the room and found Ahmed leaning his back against the wall of their hut, his clothes stained with his blue blood.

Ali looked at him suspiciously and said: "How long have you been eavesdropping on us?" Before Ahmed could answer, Ali continued: "Never mind, come with us."

They rushed toward the source of the sound and reached Nader's hut, barging in.

Ali: "My ears didn't betray me then."

Nader was playing with cats in his hut and was surprised by their sudden entry. He said: "What's wrong with you guys? This is inappropriate."

Maryam rushed in, repeating: "Where are the cats? Where are the cats?"

Ali: "Why didn't you tell us you were bringing cats!?"

Nader transformed into Sekhmat: "Did you break into the room because you heard the cats' sounds!!?"

Ali: "Yes."

Nader returned again: "Well then, be my guests. These are kittens from a pregnant cat I found a while ago, and since then I've been feeding her and them daily. I brought them here because I know they like exploring new places. Anyway, I'll take them back after half an hour."

Youssef tried to play with a small kitten, but it hissed, bit him, and ran away.

Ali: "You're not even liked among animals, but don't worry, you're my favourite."

Ahmed was watching what was happening, his mouth open, saying to himself: "Don't talk, don't wonder, just go along with them."

Several similar days passed; Ahmed repeated the same training, and the others trained in their own way, sometimes wasting time. On one occasion, Ahmed jumped with his eyes closed, trying with all his might to command the air to move upward with all his strength, but to no avail, and he thought he would fall again. However, his fall took a long time this time; he opened his eyes to find himself above the clouds; then he started falling at a crazy speed, so he started screaming: "Move, please move... move." And before he hit the ground, the air moved sideways, causing him to crash into the mountainside. The impact was strong, dislodging some rocks that fell on him.

Ali was watching from afar and hurried to remove the rocks from on top of him.

Ali: "We can consider this an improvement, right?"

Ahmed, trying to stand up: "My healing speed increased too, so yes, it's an improvement."

Ali: "How I wish we were all talented like Youssef and Marwan, Nader's friend."

Ahmed, surprised: "Friend who!?"

Ali: "What? Didn't Nader tell you about his past like he did with us? I thought he would do that; he was happy telling his story. Maybe he didn't because you were busy."

Ali told him everything Nader had said, and Ahmed was amazed as expected; then Ahmed smiled, saying: "That explains a lot and complicates a lot at the same time, but anyway, this story made me think of a good idea. We have to go to the wreckage of the Pyramids."

Ali looked around as if searching for something: "Did you lose your ear in the crash? I told you Sekhmat said that maze is dangerous enough for him to give up on the matter, and besides, we probably won't benefit much from the Devil's Gear and we might lose it, so why take the risk?"

Ahmed looked at him with a sly look: "And who said we're going to get the Devil's Gear?"
