Her father and mother dropped her off, and her sister drove her mother’s car back home. Before she could say goodnight, her mother walked into her apartment and started cleaning up. Her mother began vacuuming and then headed off to the kitchen.
“I’m going to make some overnight oats for you, so that you can eat them in the morning”, she said.
“You know your mother, that’s her way of helping. She likes to do things instead of bombarding you with questions”, her father said after he noticed Julieta’s glances towards her mother. He placed the game console on top of the coffee table.
She didn’t respond and just sat down on the cream colored sofa with a heavy sigh. That’s probably for the best, she thought; questions would lead to answers. And right now, she felt that answers would only lead to tears.
“We will be out of your hair soon. You’re lucky she’s just making overnight oats; last week, when your sister’s car went into the shop, she made her an entire pot roast.”, her father said with a chuckle.
And he was right, her mother soon finished assembling the overnight oats, and Julieta found herself saying goodnight. The apartment became quieter and less warm once her parents left.
Tomorrow was Monday.
She decided to check her email before going to bed, trying to keep herself occupied. Maybe her mother was on to something, she thought.
The very first email was from Adrian informing the leasing office that he was no longer an occupant and needed to be removed from the lease. She scrolled down and noticed he had spent the entire day removing himself from the joint accounts he had asked her to create.
She could afford the apartment and everything else; she had analyzed this exact scenario before moving in together. But the fact that he took it upon himself to terminate everything they had built together in the last eleven months stung more than anything.
She closed the laptop and just lay down on the sofa, staring at the ceiling until she fell asleep.
