Nightshade Inc: Winter's Song

Chapter 4 - [2/2]

Chapter 4 - [2/2]

Dec 16, 2025

Once they arrived in the bullpen of the police station, Diamond headed to her favorite space to perch while she waited, the window sill behind Chris’ desk. As she got comfortable she noticed Chris had not gone to his desk and instead was talking to someone.
“Good thing you're here, Jarico,” Chris said and smiled. “I was about to go down to see you in the drug unit.”
Jarico Mash was one of the officers in the drug unit and Diamond remembered that he and Chris were friends. He was slightly shorter than Chris but built a little wider in shoulders than Chris. Just like Chris, he was above average in looks and Diamond could remember him talking about him being of vampire descent from south america, which would explain his looks. “Hey if its ab-”
“Not about the case you guys took from me,” Chris reassured with a smile. “Actually we got a tip from Claire Beauséjour, who thinks one of the branch covens of the Red Mist.”
Jarico raised a brow then smiled, “Ah, and you want us to bust in and bust the lab, so you can question the one running it?” Jarico smirked and Chris nodded.
“Pierre Beauséjour the III, we already met and he is not a very pleasant little man,” Chris said and held up the pages he got from Ophelia. “He’s currently on top of my list of people to talk to about my murder case of Katie Wester.”
“You think your victim saw or heard something and this guy ordered her dead?” Jarico asked and Chris slightly shrugged.
“That and old vampires do tend to collect magical artifacts and we think one was used in her murder.” Chris said and Jarico nodded. “Oh it’s one that erases scent.”
“Oh that would be good for a drug making vampire to have, hides the smell of chemicals produced by the lab.”  Jarico muttered as he rubbed his chin. “We put that in the w-”
“Officer Quinn, there is a very unhappy male vampire here and he’s accusing you and Cleaner Silvervine of kidnapping.” An uniform officer interrupted the two and Diamond bolted to her feet and in the blink of an eye was standing beside Chris.
Jarico and the rookie cop jumped from Diamond’s sudden appearance and Diamond nudged Chris. “Kidnapping? Alright come on Diamond.” Chris ordered as he and Diamond rushed to the stairs.
“I’m coming with you!” Jarico said when he recovered from Diamond and was running after them. The stairs were faster than the elevator and the bullpen was only on the second floor.
When they bursted through the door to the lobby, Diamond noticed that the vampire was Pierre and he was yelling in French at the officer behind the lobby counter. “PIERRE!” Chris yelled out and the vampire’s head snapped to Chris.
Diamond easily kept track of the vampire as he used his super speed to rush up to Chris. Pierre snarled with glowing red eyes, “Where is my niece?” He snarled between gritted teeth and tapped Chris’ chest with a cane he was carrying.
Diamond let out a low rumbling growl and about to let her magic slip out but Pierre something in French before swinging his cane at Diamond. Diamond predicted that he would swing at her with that cane the moment he used it to tap Chris and she easily could dodge, but she didn’t.
The cane shattered against Diamond’s head and Diamond had moved her head with the force of the cane to make it hurt less. Diamond could feel the tension and silence from everyone in the room as if held their breath. Diamond slowly looked back at Pierre and saw he was back yelling at Chris, in french.
Diamond let the muscles of her body shift before grabbing Pierre and turning him to punch him. He couldn’t register what happened when Diamond grabbed him to turn him and his body fell to the ground like a bag of potatoes with a loud thump.
Diamond let out a loud sigh as she rotated her shoulder and her muscles returned to normal. “Well, getting that warrant is going to get a lot easier now.” Jarico said and all tension seemed to release from his words.
“Help me cuff him up, hey someone get me some vampire cuffs.” Chris called out and the officer behind the counter pulled from under the counter some hand and ankle cuffs.
Diamond watched them but her attention snapped to a familiar smell on her hand she used to grab Pierre and she raised her hand to get a better sniff. “Interesting…” Diamond said and that caught Chris’ attention with raised brow. “The scent of that pregnant vampire.”
Chris paused before making a face that matched what said next, “Oh.” He looked back to Pierre and back to Diamond. “Well she is on the list, maybe we should go ask her first while this fool is out cold.”

Diamond and Chris enter the Bonedust bar and Diamond found there were far more people with the sun setting. She could smell a mix of vampires, werebeasts, and even a few human scents in the room. She spotted Scarlet coming out from the staff area door and Diamond elbowed Chris before pointing with her chin.
“Mrs. Reyes!” Chris called out and she froze in place when saw Chris and Diamond. Diamond watched Scarlet and was ready to run after her as she looked like she was about to run but that feeling of running shifted when took steps towards them.
“Officer Quinn, why don’t we take this into the back?” Scarlet offered and Chris smiled with a nod. Scarlet turned around and led them into the staff area. She stopped and turned around once Chris closed the door behind him with Diamond between him and Scarlet.
“So, Adeline Beauséjour is here, right?” Chris asked and Scarlet was about to say something. “We are not here to take her back, that is a private coven business that we have no real part in, we only want to talk to her.”
Scarlet paused and before she could respond the office door beside them opened up, it was James. “Mamá, Adeline wishes to speak with them.” He said and Scarlet let out a loud sigh before waving him to move.
James moved out of the way and allowed them to enter the office. There was a small desk with paper spread across it and reminded Diamond of her own father’s desk. Her eyes trailed to the couch against the wall and a young lady sitting on it.
She had long blonde hair that was tied up in a french braid and her eyes were ruby red. She had snow white skin and she was wearing black dress and James' leather jacket resting on her shoulders. She shifted in her seat and Diamond didn’t need her nose to tell her she was pregnant due to seeing the start of her baby bump.
“Hello, I’m Officer Quinn and I have to ask some questions.” Chris said. Diamond moved to hover around Scarlet as she was hovering over Chris as if Adeline was her own daughter. Diamond respected that from the older vampire and James had taken seat beside Adeline.
“About the murder case you are working on, I heard you through the walls before.” Adeline smiled and moved her hands to hold James. “I don’t know if our coven would do such a thing or be more accurate, I couldn't narrow it down for you.”
Chris nodded and rubbed his chin, “I see…have you been craving blood more often than normal because…well.” He gestured with his eyes to her stomach. “Your condition.”
Adeline let out a laugh and Diamond oddly found it musical in nature, “Heaven’s no, in truth my blood intake hasn’t changed but my bone intake has increased.”
Diamond could see prideful smiles appear on all three vampires and Chris just chuckled, “Alright…since you can’t help my case, but maybe you can help another. If your uncle had a hidden drug lab, where would it be?” Chris asked and pulled his phone out.
Adeline closed her eyes and hemmed and hummed before her eyes flashed open and snapping her fingers, “The hidden basement, you pull one of the gas lamps in the entry way and it moves the hidden door panel." She said quickly and Chris started to dial Jarico’s number. “It used to just hold junk but two years ago when my uncle took over he cleared it out and forbade me from going down there.”
“Thank you, and congratulations.” Chris said as he put his phone to his ear. “Diamond, we are done here, let's leave this blooming family alone.” Diamond followed Chris out the door and she could hear Chris tell Jarico about the secret basement.
Once outside the cold wind hit Diamond in the face and winced from her old face scars. “Drop me off at my apartment.” Diamond said as Chris hung up his phone.
“Sure thing, next part we can round up the list with the drug unit because they will want to talk with everyone at that branch anyways.” Chris said as he got into the truck. Once they got in their seats Chris paused and looked at Diamond, “They looked happy right?”
Diamond paused then smiled, “Yes, and just as you said let’s not darken their doorway anymore.” Diamond buckled up and Chris laughed as he started the truck.

Diamond walked into her apartment and hung up her coat and holster on wall hangers. She kicked off her shoes to a corner before walking into the living room and face first flopping onto the couch. She let out a loud sigh into the couch and heard Alex’s footsteps walking over to her.
Diamond heard Alex sit down on the coffee table in front of the couch and she turned her head to look at them. “You shouldn’t sit on that glass top.” Diamond muttered.
“If I fall through you can just pick out the glass from my ass.” Alex joked before getting up and bent down to kiss Diamond’s forehead. “Long day at work?”
“Vampire family drama…one of them hit me in the head with a cane.” Diamond huffed and Alex winced.
“I hope the cane survived the hit.” Alex chuckled and Diamond rolled her eyes. “Where did it hit you?” Diamond touched the side of her face that Alex could see. They leaned down and started to kiss Diamond’s face a couple of times.
“Can we just get take out at night?” Diamond asked and Alex chuckled before standing up straight. “Pizza, with lots of meat.”
“Of course, my moon princess.” Alex said as they started to go for the phone.
“Please, I’m not a princess.” Diamond said before flipping to her back. Alex took a pause and looked at her with raised brow. “I’m a Queen.”
Alex just let out a laugh, “That you are.” Alex said and went to order a lot of pizzas with lots of meat on them.
