I Beg Your Pardon? (Part 4)

I Beg Your Pardon? (Part 4)

Dec 22, 2025

Back at the HQ's lobby, the grey-suited officer was approached by a pale, red-haired man (the same that spilled his coffee before).

The redheaded officer asked: “About the foreigner... how long will he stay here?”

The grey officer replied: “As long as the higher-ups want.”

“Well, what should we do if he attacks someone?” asked an overweight officer.

The blond grey-suited officer then called forth all available officers and guards in order to inform them the game plan for just such a scenario: “Alright, listen up... if that foreigner shows even the slightest hint of aggression, you nullify him, you grab him, you shatter his skull. Don't take any risk. Be quick and decisive if the situation calls for it. Got it?”

“Understood!” said most of the officers, but one of them whispered to an officer beside him, asking “Hey, how about we get permission to go down there and... do just that... We'll just tell them he became aggressive, they'll never know...”.

The other officer responded: “No way, we'll get in trouble. Just follow the rules, Vernon...”

Brigitte, overhearing the grey-suited officer's announcement, commented:
“How I wish that happened...”

Rob contested this: “I hope not... I still got more questions...”

Maroon then said “Hah, I think Breege's got a point here...” as she blew more smoke.

“Another one, Maroon? Why won't you stop that already? That smell...” scolded Brigitte.

“The smell is fine... it's relaxing.” Maroon claimed.

Brigitte scoffed at this, saying “I seem to recall a certain someone who thought otherwise...”, with a taunting tone.

Maroon thought for a moment, but then shrugged it off:
“Pfff, he misses out, then...”

Suddenly, the four were approached by a tall officer with greying black hair and a beardless face, dressed in a dark blue suit.

The blue officer asked them: “You're the Lochen City Team, is that correct?”

“Uhhh, yeah?” replied Rob.

“I'm Officer Reginald Ernst. I've been sent to inform you... in the case of the foreigner becoming aggressive, you'll be the first ones expected to help neutralize him.”

“With pleasure...” replied a smirking Brigitte, causing Ben to sigh.

“Wasn't he under your jurisdiction?” Maroon questioned.

“Yes, he was, but due the recent events, you are contractually tied to him.”

Brigitte rolled her eyes at this. Rob, not caring for these technicalities, threw his own question:
“Do you guys have any info on what that creature we fought was?”

“Can we... not talk about that thing...” pleaded Maroon, shivering.

“I'm curious too, for once...” admitted Ben.

“The research team has been studying it's corpse, trying to come up with some conclusion.” Ernst replied.

“What has the research shown so far?” asked Rob.

“The analysts have noted the creature's organs bear an unusually close resemblance to nikean ones. As a result, they have begun DNA testing, to try and get any clue.”

“You're saying this thing is... part-nikean? How is that-” noted Maroon.

“Nothing's been confirmed.” replied Ernst.

“That's... interesting.” Rob replied, curious,  before saying “So, Reggie... now that we're contractually obligated to stay here for a while... where will we sleep?”.

Ernst was taken aback by Rob's casualness but then replied:
“Don't worry, each of you will get a room...”

“But what are we supposed to do now?” asked Ben.

“Reggie” answered: “The higher-ups also ordered me to tell you to retire for the night.”

“Great... I really need to get my post-almost-eaten-by-monster sleep...” Maroon said, only half jokingly.

The dark-skinned nikean further asked: “Where are these rooms, then?”

“I haven't been informed of that, you'll have to ask the Administrates, they'll know.” replied “Reggie”

A befuddled Ben asked: “...Why didn't they just save time and tell you?”

“Any complaint you may have can be given at the Complaints Office.” Ernst bluntly responded.

“Thanks for telling us...” replied Ben with somewhat hidden sarcasm.

“Very well, then. If you got any doubts (other than room locations), you know where to find me... in my office.” said “Reggie” before leaving.

“Yeah... well, I'm gonna go there to ask... now that I actually feel like sleeping...” said Maroon, as the others followed.

A melancholic Brigitte whispered: “...I don't...”

“Hhhmm... they run DNA tests, huh...” Rob said to himself, already coming up with something.

Some time later, Forge took heed of Ben's advice and decided to take a shower. Truth being told, he hadn't bathed in a while (being stuck in rooms waiting for much of this "while" didn't help).

On the bed lied most of Forge's clothes plus what looked like blue transparent elbow-length gloves next to a blue transparent 'sheet'.

“Ahhhh... even a basemen' bath can be relaxin'. I'm jus' glad the shower works at leas'...”

The sound of the shower filled the room, but a slight hissing slowly made itself heard.

“Wh-Wha's that?” Forge asked, confused.

This hissing sound got higher and higher until, suddenly, the pipes burst, shooting water everywhere but the shower area. The only sound higher than that was Forge shouting “DAMMIT!!!!”.

Right outside the room, the two officers guarding Forge (unbeknownst to him, until now) burst out laughing.

While that was happening, on a building a few blocks from the HQ, the four Nikean officers went to their individual rooms for the night. These weren't luxury suites by any means, but still better than Forge's (not exactly a high bar). Maroon lied on her bed, smirking as she sent a playful message to Brigitte with her TypeTalky.

Said message was: “hey, breege, looking forward to our first day with ugly-jacket dude? >;3”

A reply was quickly sent: “-_____-  girl... taunt me ONE more time and i'll shove that typetalky right up your-”

The last word (which I took the liberty to not write here) shocked Maroon enough that she immediately turned off her TypeTalky and went to sleep.

I will not specify which word was said, but it didn't refer to her “posterior”.

Back at Forge's new room, thanks to the small incident with the shower, the floor was left adorned with a wild assortment of puddles. With most of his clothes getting wet too (the water was shot all the way to the bed), he took the opportunity to wash them, even discreetly drying them with his Blamel powers.

Figuring out (via hearing their laughter) that there were guards outside his room, Forge blocked the light by simply covering the bottom of the door with a bed sheet. Fortunately for him, the guards weren't very dedicated to their job, either.

“It's not lik' they'd be lettin' me use any washin' machines...” he whispered, scornfully.

He didn't feel like drying any floors right now, so he just went to sleep. Tomorrow was another day...

It seems the man in the blue jacket isn't having a very good time; moreover, his new companions haven't been treated very well either, so their fates are intertwined.

An odd adventure of action, complacency, heritage, purpose and change.
