Lumina was a character I created before even Neo-Man. Perhaps it was during my depression at its embryonic stage when I subconsciously wrote her. Perhaps she is a mirror of my depressed self, and Keith is the mirror of the more encouraging, optimistic, and lighthearted side of me. I channeled this concept into a beautiful and talented yet insecure and excessively shy young woman who holds onto so much sadness so that no one else suffers. That, to me, is more powerful than any other character I have ever written - especially because I didn't really even flesh out Keith until after I completed the first iteration of the story in high school. Lumina was already very well-established, and her arc - her growth - is a compelling, inspiring, and wholesome journey with a very satisfying end that I am sure will resonate with lots of people.
A lot of times I get worried readers will think "The story is called Neo-Man! Why is Lumina the center of attention half the time?!" But I think my creative choices are justified. She is the damsel in distress, but the kind of distress is not the typical one. While she heals Keith physically - a trait that both displays her unconditional kindness and plays to her strengths as strong female role - Keith helps Lumina heal emotionally. Her progression serves as a testament to Keith's noble acts, not as a super-powered crime-fighter, but as a friend. If there's one big takeaway from this story, I'd want it to be that there is great power in being a good friend.
The more you read the story, the more you realize how Keith and Lumina complement each other - their romance is not a sub-plot that gets in the way of the action. Rather, it is the driving force that makes us root for Keith and Lumina whenever they are facing some sort of threat. As Keith puts it, referring to Lumina, "You embody everything I'm fighting for"... Innocence. Compassion. Empathy. Love. Altruism. All of that. Are those not qualities of a good friend?
All of Lumina's appearances in chronological order from Books 1-3. A few more are to come for Books 4-5. I find the "Alt Girl/Hot Topic Girl" aesthetic particularly striking, and it really suits her personality. With the addition of her mask and bangs hiding most of her face, she has a very unique and eye-catching design I absolutely love to draw.
Concept Illustration for ideation of the "Melodies for Maladies" concert. If you hadn't noticed, I'm a huge fan of EDM. If Neo-Man ever gets made into an animated series, I want Lumina playing all my favorite EDM songs.
A better look at Lumina's concert gown.
Another last-minute decision of mine was to have Lumina make the switch so that her mask exposes her mouth but now covers the rest of her face. Since she gets to sing, I felt it was more logical to double down and get her lips visibly moving - further emphasizing how many steps Lumina takes to build confidence. But of course, her stubborn shyness finds a loophole. So your're gonna have to put the pieces together yourself before we get a full face reveal from her.
This was just a fun Halloween illustration I drew featuring Lumina. What? I said I love drawing her!
