The next day…
Thea and Dakota were on their way to school. Dakota hugged her parents and was on her way. When Rebecca closed the door she turned to Darren who's smile immedietely faded and he looked worried.
"What's wrong?"
Darren groaned. "The hunters are getting rather bold, lately,"
"Really?! Why now?! We haven't been doing anything wrong!"
"I-I don't know...," Darren paled. "You don't think they'd go after the school, do you? They know we have kids,"
"N-No... No. They wouldn't. Even they aren't that evil.... right?"
The two of they look a each other worried, knowing that that wasn't true. "But.... just in case.... how about I call my mother to watch Miles while the two of us do rounds?"
"Rebecca, no. I don't want you out there with me. It's fine. I'll go by myself,"
"Darren, just because I just had a baby doesn't mean I can't do my job. I'm going. End of story,"
Darren sighed. "Fine. But, please, be careful,"
...
The kids were all at school. Suddenly all the alarms go off.
“What’s going on?” Dakota asked.
Theo shrugged.
The teacher is ushering them all out.
“Come on kids, into the thicket. We need to all stay quiet,”
All the kids are hiding. Dakota and Theo are huddled together.
“Wh-What do we do?”
Suddenly Theo got dragged away screaming.
“Theo?!” Dakota cried.
Dakota ran after him, ignoring her teacher’s cries out of the thicket to see Theo being held by the scruff with a dog barking and snarling at him.
“Gotcha, you little pest,” one of the hunters said.
“Help! Let me go!”
“No, I don't think we will. You’re coming with us”
Dakota jumped out of the thicket.
“Get away from my friend!" she yelled, trying to be intimidating.
The two hunters just chuckled.
“Awww that’s cute. It’s trying to pretend it has feelings,” one snorted.
“Say freak. What’d you do if I took your little “friend” and did this?”
With that, the hunter dangled Theo over the cliff they were standing near.
“AHHH! NO! NO! DON’T DROP ME!”
“NO!” Dakota charged at the hunter and bit his leg.
“AH! YOU LITTLE BRAT!”
The hunter dropped Theo.
“Theo, go!” Dakota cried as the two ran back towards the thicket.
The hunter blasted their gun right in front of Dakota’s path causing her to yelp and fall over. Dakota looked up at the gun pointed right at her.
“Say goodnight,”
Suddenly, Dakota’s mom stood over her growling.
“Back off,”
The hunter chuckled. “Of course. What a strong looking cub… is it yours?”
“She’s none of your concern,”
Darren tackles the hunters and Rebecca grabs Dakota as she shook and ran back into the thicket. Behind them, they heard Dreen screaming.
“Dad!” Dakota cried.
Rebecca hide Dakota with Theo in the thicket.
“It’s ok, Dakota. Stay here, ok?”
Rebecca ran back to help Darren.
Dakota’s vision swam as she heard both her parents screaming. She was brought out of it by Theo hugger her and crying.
“-ta I’m sorry! I’m so so sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Dakota, I’m so sorry!”
In front of them, Darren and Rebecca were lying there with holes from the hunter’s weapons. The hunters had left, but Darren and Rebecca didn’t get up.
