I felt her breath catch for a second, as if she couldn't quite believe it. When she looked up, her eyes—always so hard—were filled with something fragile. Hope.
"Jaika..." she murmured.
Beside me, Hikari let out a choked sound.
I turned slightly and saw her. Tears streamed down her face, undisguised. She said nothing. She didn't ask me to stay. She simply took a step back... then another... and finally turned and ran, disappearing into the streetlights.
I didn't follow her.
Kuro squeezed my hand tightly, as if afraid I would disappear too.
"Come," she said. "Don't look back."
I took her home.
The walk was silent, but not uncomfortable. There was a sense of certainty in the air, as if the world had finally accepted the path we were on. When we arrived, we sat down in the living room, facing each other. I opened my mouth to speak, to gather my thoughts... but Kuro wouldn't let me.
She leaned toward me and gently took my shoulders.
"Kuro..." I whispered, completely red.
She looked down at me, her expression serious, intense, but not threatening.
"Hikari isn't bad," she said. "But it's not the whole truth. It's a mask. A way to survive without looking back."
Her voice was low, sincere.
"I am what remains when a smile is no longer enough," she continued. "Fear, anger... and also the need not to be alone."
She leaned in a little closer.
"You did the right thing by staying with me."
Before I could reply, her lips found mine.
Her kiss was passionate, deep, charged with everything she had never allowed herself to say aloud. There was no rush, but no hesitation either. I felt her envelop me, her presence anchor me, as if the darkness weren't an emptiness... but a refuge.
When we parted, my mind was foggy and my eyelids felt heavy.
Kuro gently held me and tucked me against er chest. Her arm circled my back, firm and protective.
"Sleep," she whispered. "I'm here."
And I did.
I never saw Hikari again.
Sometimes I thought I saw her in the crowd, reflected in a window or in the glare of a streetlamp, but she was never really there. She didn't return. She didn't call. She didn't ask for anything.
Kuro did.
Kuro never left me alone.
In the silent nights, in the gray days, in the painful memories... she stayed. Not with empty promises, but with a constant, real, honest presence.
The darkness didn't swallow me.
It held me.
