C-Class District
Aradi sat across from Zzarr and Sidko, she bit into her BugSub, they sat by a tall window, digging into their meals. An average protectorate break lasted about an hour and a half, but the shift ended after 12-13 hours. The Elf was known to do weeks of overtime, due to her lack of needing sleep, even covering for others. Experiencing how the Ancient conducted herself for the past few days gave Sidko and Zzarr a short preview of just how much credit she has.
"Sidko, you owe me a cup of coffee" she said as she gulped down parts of her meal. Sidko slouched,
"What kind of coffee"
"Vanilla"
"okay....I can get to you tomorrow"
Aradi nodded as she chewed her food.
Zzarr looked up at Sidko,
"So, is being a Protectorate the dream you thought it was"
He nodded,
"Yea, but I was expecting more...."
The Elf looked at him,
"More, like what, like.." - she cut herself off by a slight chuckle,
"Like, car chases? Shootouts? Psychopath murderers?"
He nodded,
"Yea"
A small Citizen walked up to Aradi, no more than 14 years of life likely,
"hey , uh you're, you're"
Aradi turned,
"Not human, and off duty, come back in 5"
She turned back to her meal. The young Citizen looked to Sidko and Zzarr, who both made the expression: "don't look at me". It was clear that coming between food and Aradi was not something to do. The youngin spoke again,
"Uh ok, well. When you're on - there's this smell next to my room - "
Aradi groaned, Sidko and Zzarr simply observed, they were off-put by how Aradi treated strangers, they had heard she was loved by the locals. Maybe that was just a rumor,
"Ok. In 4 minutes, I'll talk to you. You're interrupting the last of my shake, get away from me" the Elf said. The kid backed away and waited from a distance. Simultaneously, their Protectorate Devices vibrated, indicating break time was over. Aradi neatly packed her wrappers and empty shake into a bag. They watched the performance of her etiquette as she elegantly stood herself up and dispensed the trash into the bing. She then turned around and looked at the Citizen and spoke politely, Zzarr and Sidko looked on in awe as the Elf squatted down to give a level of eye contact,
"Now, Citizen. Your issue should be taken up with the maintenance workers in your building. The Protectorate doesn't really deal with things that smell"
The Citizen nodded but responded back,
"They aren't answering, and the smell has gotten real bad, the door won't open either, I knocked"
Aradi made a face of thought,
"Well ok then, let's go see what's going on"
Her eyes then darted to Zzarr and Sidko, they pierced through the cloud of aloof that they had gone under from observing what was essentially a mood swing. They quickly crumpled up their wrappers and went to the bins.
The Citizen directed them to a building next to the restaurant. The 3 protectorate officers stood on the steps with Aradi being at the top. She turned to them,
"This is an unusual case, but it's more than likely that maintenance is sleeping on the job. It's a good opportunity to remember that no one is above the Council's perfected laws". The two nodded. The Protectorate turned her head and opened the door, heading inside followed by the two rookies.
Aradi's skin crawled, her shoulders raised up, her head tilted forward as her nose quickly exhausted itself, she briefly shook her head. The apartment block held a linear greenish colored floor that led down the hallway to the maintenance room. The hallway was bleak, devoid of the sunlight from the outside, a light switch on the ceiling clung to the last of its remaining time. Zzarr looked up at the light, the darkness tormenting the flickering light gave her a bit of goosebumps. Suddenly her nose filled up with a strange smell, as did it for Sidko. The two made faces of disgust,
"What the hell is that smell" Zzarr asked. Aradi stood quiet as she approached a sliding door, a scanner with an interface was present on the door. She opened her Protectorate Device and initiated a legal override. The scanner confirmed authorization. The door should have opened, but instead, it came to a halting screech.
"Doors' jammed" she muttered. Aradi placed her hands on the edge of the door and tugged against the machinery, she grit her teeth while mustering more strength from her arms, it creaked,
"Aghhhh" she groaned as it then broke free, she hunched over. Sidko and Zzarr looked on to her, an incredible feat, everything they read back before graduation seemed to not just be boasts. The blue eyes of the Elf looked down to see a strange thick liquid on the ground, her eyes slowly widened. She quickly took out her weapon, and proceeded. The other two followed her lead, as they came around the corner from the entrance into the maintenance room. Their arms as well as their legs became weakened, their guns slowly lowered. The 3 stood before a horrific sight. Something right out of one of those horror stories you'd hear in the NC-District.
"I guess you're getting what you wished for, Sidko" Aradi said.
The source of the thick liquid came from the dripping sounds of 3 Citizen, who had their heads jammed onto wooden pikes, their bodies stripped of their skin coatings. Their faces were distorted, with little crawling bugs around their faces, chipping away at their skin and other rotting body parts. Aradi approached the one in the center, she looked to her left, and to her right. The middle corpse held its eyes neatly packed where they should be, though they looked in opposite directions towards the other bodies. The other two held a unison appearance, optical nerves cut and a singular eye placed inside their open jaws, their hands bound and tied behind their back while the one in the middle had open palms where the eyes of the others were placed.
Sidko suddenly threw up, Aradi turned, in a way she was thrown off by the fact she forgot Sidko and Zzarr where there,
"Get out" she ordered, the two nodded as they scurried out. Aradi stepped back, she clutched her walkie and phoned it in,
"Dispatch this is Antara-Zero, I got a 124 on 3 bodies"
Aradi exited the apartment. Sidko and Zzarr were outside, shaken.
"Snap out of it, there's an HIU on the way, until then, we got orders to keep these people to stay inside, set up the tape, and monitor the exits. I'll get the tape, Zzaarr to the back exit and keep an eye " she said, Sidko nodded and hopped to it, Zzarr nodded. Aradi walked down the steps to her vehicle and popped the back of the van. The back compartment had levels of equipment for officers to use in their duties, despite this van not being made for situations like this, it came with just enough to prep a more sophisticated approach. She grabbed two Barrier Tapes and closed the doors.
The Barrier Tape designs are squared devices about 3 feet in height and a foot in width, they have a small dark blue light at the top, indicating its 'stand by' mode and can float in its designation when active. She placed them on opposite ends of the steps right on the curb and pressed a button on one, the blue light turned orange, and a red beam shot out from the side, connecting to the other 'tape'.
Sidko looked up to see a ship descending onto the street, it had Galactic Council logos underneath it, the thrusters soothed themselves as the landing gear began to extend from the bottom of the haul. The ship
landed. 2 Citizens exited the ship, they wore windbreakers instead of tactical field vests with the words "investigators" on it. Aradi approached them,
"You're the Lieutenant?" One asked, she nodded, he looked to Sidko,
"Crazy first day huh?" he asked, his eyes a light orange color. He looked to Aradi, who
Aradi lead the Colonel to the laundry room.
