CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1

The morning sun cast long shadows across the courtyard, painting the school's pristine white walls in gold. Seanan Ratanakorn walked between the students like a ghost moving through a crowd, silent admiration brushing past him with every step. Eyes lingered; whispers trailed him.

"Top of the school again... how does he do it?"
"Perfect grades, perfect demeanor... does he even sleep?"

Seanan didn't notice them. He never did. His mind was elsewhere, lost in patterns, calculations, and memories that only he could navigate. His gaze briefly flicked to the courtyard's small garden, where a memory lingered like a photograph-his twin, Sena, laughing as petals fell around him, a carefree smile that Seanan had tried, and failed, to protect.

He sighed softly, the sound lost among the bustling students. To everyone else, he was untouchable. Brilliant. The kind of student who made teachers beam and classmates resentfully admire. But beneath the polished veneer, a quiet storm raged. A part of him always wondered: had he done enough to protect those he cared about?

Meanwhile, near the main gate, a commotion broke the usual morning calm. A cluster of students formed a half-circle around a newcomer. Kavi Chatchai stepped out of the car, eyes wide but composed, adjusting the strap of his backpack. He was escorted by the Heartthrob Group-the legendary group everyone whispered about but few had actually approached. The four girls who constantly orbited them hung nearby, chatting quietly, their eyes sparkling with the kind of admiration reserved for people who seemed untouchable.

"Welcome to your first day, Kavi," Pawin, the group's leader, said with a casual smile that suggested power without effort. "Try not to trip on your first steps. That would be... embarrassing."

Kavi's lips curved into a polite smile. "I don't plan to."

His gaze flicked over the group, curious and measured. He noticed the hierarchy immediately-the subtle glances, the half-smiles, the whispered jokes-and the girls who trailed the boys like satellites. Everything was predictable, almost painfully so. And yet... he sensed that something underneath the surface was off.

Seanan, seated at a window bench across the courtyard, noticed Kavi immediately. The boy had a calm alertness about him, a quiet observant quality that most students lacked. And for reasons Seanan could not name, it drew his attention.

"He's cautious. Curious. And annoyingly... perceptive," Seanan thought, narrowing his eyes slightly.

Classes began, and the social structures of the school settled into their familiar rhythm. Seanan remained at the back of the classroom, his posture impeccable, his notebook meticulously organized. He worked silently, taking in every detail-the seating arrangement, the whispered conversations, the subtle interactions between students he barely acknowledged.

The Heartthrob Group and their girls clustered together in the front. Kavi sat slightly apart from the others, notebook open but gaze wandering, studying his surroundings with careful interest.

A whisper reached his ears, just enough to tease his attention:
"I heard one of the top students has a twin... didn't survive school well."

Kavi's brow furrowed slightly. He turned his head, scanning the classroom, but no one met his gaze. Only Seanan, seated alone, gave a faint, unreadable smile. That smile didn't offer warmth. It offered observation. Awareness. Something like... warning.

The hours passed. Lessons blurred. Seanan's mind wandered back to his twin, Sena, and the countless ways the world had been cruel to him. A small knot of guilt had always lingered there, unspoken and unshared. Seanan had watched silently while others tormented his twin, unable to intervene in a way that would have mattered.

Now, as he closed his notebook to leave class, a subtle vibration in his pocket drew his attention. He pulled out his phone. The screen displayed a single message:

"Welcome to your evaluation."

No sender. No instructions. Just that line, stark and clinical.

Seanan's lips curved slightly-not in amusement, but in recognition. Something was happening, and he was at the center of it.

"Interesting," he thought. "The Game has begun."

He slid the phone into his pocket, eyes narrowing.

Later, at the school courtyard during lunch, Kavi approached the group hesitantly. He noticed Seanan sitting alone, quietly observing the world. There was something magnetic about the boy, something that drew attention without asking for it. Kavi found himself walking closer, curiosity outweighing hesitation.

"Hey," Kavi said softly, unsure how to begin. "Mind if I... sit?"

Seanan glanced up, eyes calculating but calm. He inclined his head. "Do as you wish."

The simplicity of the invitation, devoid of any warmth or malice, unsettled Kavi more than the whispers of the Heartthrob Group. There was a gravity about Seanan that demanded attention, yet resisted engagement.

As lunch progressed, subtle tensions began to surface. The Heartthrob Group's leader, Pawin, noticed Kavi speaking to Seanan. A small smirk tugged at his lips-not malicious, but testing.

"Making friends with the loner already?" he said casually, loud enough for Kavi to hear.

Kavi's expression remained polite but firm. "Just observing."

Seanan, still calm, watched the exchange quietly. His mind was already analyzing the dynamics-who held influence, who feared whom, and who would be susceptible to manipulation.

He didn't yet know that this Game, starting with a simple message, would test all of them-friends and enemies alike.

By mid-afternoon, students began noticing strange anomalies on their devices. Notifications appeared without explanation, cryptic and minimal. Some ignored them, assuming it was a system glitch. Others whispered nervously.

Seanan's phone buzzed again. Another message:

"Are you ready?"

He looked up, eyes scanning the courtyard. No one was watching him. Yet he felt the weight of something far larger than the school, far larger than himself, beginning to stir.

Kavi, across the yard, noticed Seanan's subtle shift in demeanor. Something was changing in the air-a tension that even the school's hierarchy could not control. He felt it, too: the sense that this day was not ordinary, that the perfect balance of admiration, envy, and fear was about to tilt.

By the time the final bell rang, the atmosphere was heavy with unease. Students packed their things quickly, murmuring about the strange messages and odd occurrences. The Heartthrob Group lingered, their confidence slightly shaken. The four girls whispered amongst themselves, glancing at Seanan's solitary figure with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.

Seanan walked through the emptying hallways, phone in hand. Another message appeared:

"Observation begins. Proceed carefully."

He paused. His mind, calm yet restless, analyzed the wording. "Observation," "evaluation," "proceed carefully." Simple phrases. But precise. Intentional. Calculated.

"So," he murmured under his breath, "someone knows the rules... or they know me."

He smiled faintly, almost imperceptibly. The Game was not random. Not chaotic. It was designed for him-or perhaps around him.

And he, more than anyone, understood what that meant.

Later that evening, Seanan returned to his room, locking the door behind him. His desk was immaculate, papers stacked neatly. But the message from the school still glowed on his phone screen. He read it again:

"Welcome to your evaluation."

He studied the words, memorized their spacing, their tone. A part of him felt anticipation-another part, a caution he could not dismiss.

"I've seen systems before," he thought. "But never one designed to cut this deeply. Someone is watching... someone who understands how to push me."

The faintest shadow of a smile touched his lips. It was a smile that promised observation, calculation, and maybe... a reckoning.

Across the city, Kavi sat on his bed, replaying the day in his mind. Something about Seanan was compelling, unsettling, and impossible to ignore. He didn't know the half of it. The Game had already started. And Seanan-enigmatic, brilliant, dangerous Seanan-was at its heart.

Seanan's phone buzzed once more. The screen displayed a single line in bold, unyielding text:

"Let the evaluation begin."

Seanan's eyes gleamed. Calm, precise, and deadly focused.

"Interesting," he whispered. "It begins."

The shadows of the school stretched long outside, mirroring the quiet storm that had just awakened. Somewhere in the city, the architect of the Game was watching. And this first round was only a taste.
