I pushed those thoughts out of my head as I turned and faced the twins. They weren't at my table anymore; they were at the door. The other twin's leg had thawed enough that he could stand on it. They were both staring at me, just waiting for me to come. When I tried to take a step in their direction, though, something stopped me.
I glanced back at the elixirs behind me, and for the first time. I didn't want to just leave them. After a moment's hesitation, I reached under the table for my old bookbag. A cloud of dust and other things came with it. I gave it a good shake before opening the zipper.
It contained my journals, old school supplies, and old objects I used to cherish. I ignored all of that stuff. I made sure the elixirs were closed before placing them carefully in the bag. I don't know why I want to bring them. Still, I would never ignore a feeling like this.
I grabbed a couple more face masks and gloves since I was carrying this bag, anyway. Once I was done, I made my way over to the door. The twins had stopped staring at me. Instead, they were staring out the door. The twins—is that what I was going to keep calling them? Do they even know their own names?
I opened my mouth to ask, but before I could, they spoke first. "Ma---n-y corp--cor---p."
"Do you two have names?" I interrupted, trying to distract them.
Their eyes turned to me at my question. Tilting their heads as they tried to think what their name could be. In the end, they just shook their heads. Telling me they didn't know. Their actions were almost the same as each other.
I don't know if it's because they're twins or the experiments done on them. It was kind of cute, though. I blinked in shock at those thoughts. These were full-grown adults whom I experimented on that literally towered over me. I should not be calling them cute just because they're acting like children.
"Okay, um, why don't you name yourselves then?"
Once again, they were tilting their heads in thought, and I once again had to tell myself not to call them cute.
The twin with the broken jaw pointed to himself. "Th---e—e." While the other twin did the same, but he said. "Tho."
I bit back a laugh at those childish names. "Alright, Thee and Tho, it is."
It wasn't hard to tell them apart. Even if one of them didn't speak as if they were just learning English. I have sliced open their bodies and seen their insides. I pieced together Thee's jaw by hand. Still, if I were someone else, I could understand if they got confused.
They look exactly alike, down to their body shape and height. The Nightmare Master had insisted that I record all that data dow-. My eyes snapped toward the filing cabinet filled with those files. My bookbag might not fit all of that stuff. However, that bag will fit it.
I glanced over at my doctor's bag at the foot of the table. Though it looks more like a duffel bag, that's big enough to fit a body into. The bag holds all the tools I must use during the experiments.
"Wait at the door. I'm going to grab something else, and then we can leave." I told Thee and Tho.
I grabbed the bag before pulling open the filing cabinets and stuffing the folders into the bag. The tools didn't really take up much room, so I didn't bother dumping them out of the bag. Once again, I did not know why I wanted to take this stuff; I just did. Once I was done, I tried to pick up the bag. The keyword is "tried".
I couldn't even get it an inch off the ground before it dropped back to the floor with a thump. I reached for it to try again. Before I could even try another hand grabbed at the handle. Thee took the bag from me, heaving it over his shoulder. He grinned at me, more than happy to be helping.
I smiled back. "Thanks, Thee. We should get going now."
As I stepped back up to the door, I stopped hesitating and just stepped out. The smell hit me instantly once I stepped out the door. It was so much worse, and it took everything in me not to throw up. When Thee and Tho stepped out, though, it didn't affect them. Maybe it was because they are now walking corpses.
They were more interested in what it looked like instead of what it smelled like. I guess it's not every day that you see a maze made of literal corpses. The Nightmare Master built an underground maze and stuck me down here. Then, every time my experiment failed, he forced me to line the walls, floors, and roof with the rotting corpses of those failed experiments.
As soon as I step out the door, I have three paths I could follow—straight, left, or right. I've walked down all three of them, but never had any luck finding an exit.
"Which way should we go?"
Since I had already walked down all three with no luck. Maybe letting the twins choose will give me some luck. I expected them to choose the same path since they always do the same thing. Instead, they both pointed in different directions. One pointed left while the other pointed right.
When they realized that both of them pointed where the other had pointed. Then they did it again and again until I finally spoke up.
"You know what, since it is the only way you didn't point, let's go straight."
I started walking before they could think of arguing. I wasn't trying to be rude, but if I waited until they solved it, then I would wait for a long time.
