I reached into my pocket to pull out the scissors and do just that when the Nightmare Master started yelling.
"DON'T YOU DARE PULL THOSE SCISSORS OUT OF YOUR POCKET."
I tilted my head. "What did I tell you about yelling?"
He was silent for a moment before he spoke in a tone of barely concealed anger. "Can you please address the camera, telling everyone who you are and answering a couple of questions?"
"Okay, just make sure the camera is in the right place." I agreed easily.
I heard him mutter a few choice words under his breath at me. Probably still upset, but I ignored him. I shifted into a more comfortable position before counting to three.
I gave a little wave in the direction the camera should be. "Hey guys, I'm Strings. I'm sure you have a lot of questions, one of them being who the hell I am. Before I get into all that, though, I should thank you guys for watching. Now, as for your questions, they are going to be read by our famous guest, the one and only Nightmare Master. Since I am blind, I need someone like him to read the questions for me. Don't ask him to come in front of the camera, though. He doesn't like to, and it really upsets him when you ask. Anyway, let's get to it."
"Actually." The Nightmare Master spoke up. "They are going to call in to ask questions."
"Really, it's been years since I've talked to anyone; this should be fun."
A man's voice filled the space. "Do I really have to do th—ow, okay, I'm doing it. Um, why are you called Strings?"
I tilted my head, pretending to think of an answer. In reality, I was wondering why he was trying so hard. The only logical reason is that he wants something. So, he is trying to get it through these questions. I should probably respond with the most basic answers.
"Oh, that's an easy one. I'm named Strings based on my ability."
Everyone was silent after that, expecting me to continue. When I didn't, the Nightmare Master whispered something.
"Wait, no, I did what you asked. Please, no."
A lady's voice filtered through soon after. "Can... can you explain your abilities to those of us who don't know?"
I guess he would not let this go; it seems. "Well, it's kind of hard to explain. Are you sure you want to know?"
"Yes, yes, I want to know." She practically sobbed in her excitement.
Or maybe it was because she didn't want to be dragged off like that other man. "Though I am blind, I can still see things. My ability allows me to see these things I call strings. I can use these strings to do anything with anyone I choose. May I ask why you are asking these questions, Nightmare Master?"
Asking him outright will probably upset him. However, everything I do upsets him, so why should I hold back? He was silent for a moment, and I thought he was going to make up some excuse.
Instead, he stated. "I want to know whose memories are on your arm."
I held my arm up, staring at the bracelet he talked about. He was correct; it was made of those strings. Though I am surprised that he had noticed it. To others, they were just ordinary strings.
"It's not mine if that's what you are asking. I'm not stupid enough to risk something like that."
"Then whose is it?"
"I... I don't actually know. I don't remember where it came from."
I wasn't lying; I don't really remember. I have thought of taking the strings and watching their memories, but something always stops me. The Nightmare Master didn't like my answer. Though that is nothing new. Before he could say something else, a sensation pulled my attention away.
It was the feeling of something stretching long past when it should. I slid my hands along the strings until I found where that was coming from. Ringmaster. He has been under my control for a little too long. I was interrupted by the Nightmare Master when I reached down to unweave the string.
"What do you think you're doing? I'm not done with you."
I glanced up. "Ringmaster has been under my control for too long. I can stop if you really want. However, I doubt you want to repeat what happened last time."
He went silent again, and I took that as permission. I pulled at different parts of the string, loosening it until it could slip away. I watched it go kind of sad. I won't be able to watch the world through his eyes anymore. It is necessary, though.
Keeping hold of someone's mind for too long can completely shatter it. Once shattered, a person is no longer completely the same. I'm not entirely sure they are still human anymore.
"I should release the rest of them; it is getting close."
I reach for the next string, but when I touched it, a shock goes through me. I jerked my hand back before trying once again. All I got, though, was the same shock as before. Flashes of something went through my head this time. They were too far away, though I couldn't catch any of them.
I let the strings go for now, deciding that I'll figure it out later. I unwove them one by one, letting them go back to their owner. The relief of getting their bodies back was the last thing I felt before each of them slipped away. It would have been a pleasant feeling if I had understood it. I sat down at the edge of the hole, my feet dangling since I no longer had the strings to sit on.
"So, do you still have questions for me?"
"No, the camera is off. Oh, and forget the bracelet; I was just trying to use it to give you some mystery. The viewers would get bored just watching you unweave some invisible strings."
