Chapter 2: Leave Boots by Bridge

Chapter 2: Leave Boots by Bridge

Jan 20, 2026

The night dwindled by. The moon lay vacant in the sky, and the receptor stayed in Jazelle’s bag.

Jazelle heard a sound. The receptor buzzed. It glowed, it buzzed, and each time it buzzed, it buzzed at a different frequency as if it were trying to talk to her. She heard it even in her dreams. Jazelle felt the energy hidden within that receptor. It was complex. Several aluminum-based alloys overlapped, with a pulsing heart… A renewable energy source? Fascinating. Jazelle floated above that energy source and wanted to touch it. She reached out, and just as she did. She woke up.

It was still the dead of night, and the house was so quiet that barely a sound could be heard. Jazelle stood up, head slouched forward. She laid a hand near her temples, the machine…it was calling out to her. She eyed her backpack on the edge of the bed and saw it emanating a fierce neon glow. She picked up her bag, unzipped it, and held the receptor in her hand. It was smaller than her Astrolab, but heavier. The receptor had a lot of scratched and chipped parts. There was light pulsing within it, and it was fading in and out.

As a test, she tapped the middle. Nothing happened. She started twisting it. As she twisted it, the receptor divided into squares; some cubes showed shapes, others didn’t. This was a puzzle. Jazelle feared for her life; she didn’t know what this was, but her face cracked into a smile. She loved a challenge, and she loved playing Tantreez.

She twisted and turned the receptor in different directions, both horizontally and vertically. Depending on how you twisted the Astrolab, some parts were elevated, and other parts depressed. Jazelle was starting to see a pattern. The depressed parts usually had patterns etched into them. It was as if she were trying to unscramble an image, a symbol that was etched into the receptor.

This wasn’t the latest receptor in the market; at first, she thought it was GT-023, but she realized the receptor just looked similar. It probably had the same capabilities, but to use it was a different story. As Jazelle scratched her head, trying to figure all this out, suddenly, she realized the pattern looked similar to a group of teenagers she saw the other day…They all had the same pattern.

Her hands fastened onto the receptor. Jazelle’s eyes widened like a prey caught in its trap.

This can’t be real.

There was reality, and fantasy. She spent the happiest of her days in Sun-Downe; she twisted the receptor one side at a time and touched the depressed squares that she thought resembled that pattern. As she touched each of the depressed squares that matched the image she had in mind, light emanated from the square, revealing a letter.

Jazelle solved and twisted the rest of the puzzle. With each rotation, she wrote the letters in each row.

In no time, she solved it. The receptor clicked, opened, and collapsed like a robotic flower. In the centre, something that resembled a mechanical oval gem was floating. One touch, and Jazelle's journey would begin.
