It had been a while since his visit to the prison. Although Wynona had helped in the moment, Ferris was still shaken. His nightmares had gotten worse, more creative. Wynona was in them sometimes. They were more violent and vivid. He would wake up multiple times throughout the night. He hated waking Wynona up in the middle of the night so instead he would revise the song. He added a better ending to it and would come up with his own melody to show to Wynona later on. But even that did not keep the nightmares at bay sometimes.
Ferris still was not on good terms with Nonna. They would talk if they had to, but he could not bring himself to have a conversation with her. If he tried, he only thought about their argument. How she never listened to him. He felt terrible avoiding her, but it was hard to forgive her. He could tell she noticed because she stopped trying to talk to him, which really hurt. But he could not blame her either. Ferris knew they both just needed space and hopefully he would be able to forgive her soon. Then they could go back to how things were like before.
With everything that had happened, the last thing on his mind was coming clean to Wynona. He meant to tell her in January, but so much time had passed. In February she was so focused on Valentine's Day and he did not want to ruin it. Then in March, it was her birthday and he did not want to ruin that either. It was April. They had already celebrated his birthday and there were no special occasions coming up in the month anymore. However, Ferris thought it was too late to say anything without things getting out of hand. He knew he was making a big mistake, but maybe Wynona really did not have to know. Maybe that was for the best.
It was noon. Ferris had just finished getting ready and changing into a black shirt with a black jacket, green cargo pants, and black sneakers. He put his contacts in last. After what had happened, he could not stand the idea of going out without them. Sometimes he could not be home with them off. With how often he was wearing them he made sure to buy a better solution so his eyes were not as irritated anymore.
Ferris grabbed his skateboard by the door and his keys. He turned to Nonna who was sitting on the couch. She was already staring at him. "Um, I'm going to Wynnie's place for dinner."
"Oh," She sounded disappointed. "You've been going there a lot lately."
"I don't have to go if you don't want me to." He wanted her to ask him to stay, but at the same time he needed to get out of the house. In the back of his mind, he was afraid she would drop a random date for him to see his father again. At least if he was never home she could never make plans for him.
She shook her head. "Just let me know when you're coming home and if you need to be picked up."
Ferris nodded. He wanted to say more, but he was stuck. He awkwardly waved and left the house. He swore under his breath, regretting not saying anything, but what was he supposed to say? He did not forgive her, he was not going to lie to her for her sake. He wanted to forgive her, but there was a step he needed to take to get there. Ferris had no idea what that step was.
He pushed all of his thoughts aside and got on his skateboard and started on his way to Wynona's house. It seemed like a very long ride with all the stops he had to make at lights giving him more time to think. At some point he hit the curb and fell off, but he was not hurt. It was frustrating, but he did his best to keep his cool. He did not want to be in a bad mood around Wynona's family. Although it took a while, he got to Wynona's house within the hour.
Ferris picked up his skateboard and knocked on the door. "Hello?" He called.
The door opened and June was grinning at him. She had her short hair pulled back into a ponytail and out of her face. She was wearing a brown oversized off-the-shoulder t-shirt with black basketball shorts. "Are you ready? Today's the day I beat you in Mario Kart!" She grabbed his arm and pulled him inside toward the couch.
"June Bug! Let the boy breathe!" Andrea scolded from the kitchen. She turned to Ferris and her expression softened. "Hey Sweetie! How are you?"
Ferris waved. "Hi, Mrs. Henriquez. I'm good, do you need any help?"
Andrea grinned and shook her head. "As much as I love having my cooking buddy with me, June Bug is very eager to play that game with you."
"Come on!" June grabbed his arm again. "Come! On!"
Ferris laughed and followed her to the couch. His relationship with June, like his with Wynona's, changed. After he and Wynona started dating, Ferris saw June in a different way. She had become more like a sister for him to play games with. June talked to him more as well, but usually only about the games she wanted to play with him. Ferris did not mind. The relationship he had with her now was much better than the one he initially wanted.
June started the game and handed Ferris a controller. She sat down next to him and was very focused on the game. Ferris was not as competitive as her, but he played the game the best he could. While they played though, Ferris would get distracted and make conversation with Andrea. It only angered June more because somehow Ferris would still win. They played for a while until June finally raged after losing to Ferris a few too many times. Ferris found it more amusing to see her react. He never played to win, but he just so happened to win. June had begun to pester him to keep playing, adamant on the fact that she would win the next round.
Before Ferris could agree, Wynona leaned over the couch wrapping her arms around Ferris's shoulders. She glared at her sister. "If you don't mind, I'd like to borrow my boyfriend."
"Can't you hang out with him later? You see him all the time." June pouted and crossed her arms over her chest.
Ferris laughed and handed June the controller. "We can play after dinner, okay?"
She rolled her eyes. "Fine."
"How about you help me with dinner, June Bug?" Andrea called in a teasing manner.
June forced a laugh that turned into an awkward cough. "Oh no, I, um, have homework." She smiled and quickly retreated to her room down the hall.
Wynona watched her leave before leading Ferris to her room. Ferris sat down on the bed and turned to Wynona who was closing the door. "So why'd you want to borrow me?" Ferris quickly noticed Wynona was wearing one of his sweatshirts. It was one he had given her a few weeks ago to borrow. Ferris could not help but stare, lost in thought.
She chuckled and sat down beside Ferris. "Nice jacket."
"Thanks." Ferris was still staring at the sweatshirt.
"Can I see it?"
Ferris nodded, not realizing Wynona was already pulling it off of him. He was distracted for a while until Wynona was tracing her fingers across Ferris's chest. He felt every part of his face heat up. Ferris turned to Wynona who was not looking at him, but at his chest. "Hey, wh–what are you doing there?"
Wynona briefly glanced up at Ferris. "You wore this shirt and expected me not to do anything?" She picked up the chain around his neck, her eyes glued to the pendant. It was a gold piece with a star engraved in it. The edges were bumpy as if they were missing a piece. She looked up at Ferris. "Who gave this to you?"
He looked down at the pendant. "Oh, Aimee gave that to me when we were in elementary. She and Cole have one, too. I'm not one for jewelry, but she was so happy to give it to us so I wear it. If you pay attention you'll see that they wear theirs too."
Wynona nodded and dropped the pendant on his chest. "I see." She glanced up at Ferris briefly and smiled gently. She kissed him gently and slowly inched down to his neck.
Ferris shuddered and backed away from Wynona. "I–I just got here, Wynnie Bear."
She rolled her eyes, sitting on Ferris's lap. "We can talk later." Wynona did not give Ferris a chance to object and quickly kissed him. She ran her hands up and down his arms, stopping at his shoulders.
Ferris was not as confident or experienced as Wynona, but he had gotten more bolder over time. He gently grabbed Wynona's waist and pulled her closer. His heart always fluttered when Wynona was near him. Being so close, though it flustered Ferris, was one of his favorite things. He loved sliding his hands up and down her back and hearing Wynona laugh quietly. Ferris was still figuring out where to put his hands most of the time, but he loved discovering a new spot.
Wynona, on the other hand, seemed to have Ferris figured out quickly. Ferris knew she loved teasing him any chance she could get. One of her favorites was to slowly stop kissing him. Wynona started pushing Ferris away until he was laying down and she was over him. She leaned in and briefly kissed him, her lips brushing against his chin, to his jaw, and stopping at his neck. Her hands were slithering their way up his shirt, resting on his stomach. That was Wynona's favorite place to put her hands. It always made Ferris gasp. The feeling of Wynona's hands on his skin always gave Ferris an overwhelming tingly feeling through his entire body. Add the feeling of her lips and tongue against his neck and it made Ferris want to utter her name.
As Wynona was slowly inching her way down Ferris's neck to his chest there was a knock at the door. Wynona stopped, an annoyed look on her face. She sat up, still sitting on top of Ferris. "Yes?"
"Dinner is going to be ready soon." It was her mother. "We're going to eat when your father gets back from work. He's on his way back."
Wynona rolled her eyes. "Okay."
Ferris listened to her footsteps get quieter as she returned back to the other room. He glanced at the door and abruptly, Wynona fell on top of him. She was laying on her side, her hand still under Ferris's shirt. Ferris wrapped his arms around Wynona's shoulders and kissed the top of her head.
Wynona tried to move in closer, but her knee ran into a roadblock. Ferris jerked forward at the sudden pain and laughed. "Hey! Watch it."
"Oops." Wynona looked up at Ferris apologetically. She slid her hand up and down Ferris's stomach and looked down. "How often do you work out?"
Ferris could not control the grin on his face, or the heat rising in his cheeks. "Um, every other day."
Wynona nodded and slightly lifted Ferris's shirt. Ferris's eyes widened with embarrassment and he quickly sat up. Wynona, caught off guard, rolled off of Ferris and was laying on the bed. Wynona laughed and rubbed Ferris's arm. "You're so cute when you're jumpy." She sat up and kissed Ferris briefly.
Ferris chuckled and kissed her. "Should we go out there? Before they get suspicious?"
"Nah," Wynona wrapped her arms around Ferris's neck and pulled him back down to lay down. "I don't want to share you yet."
"I'm fine with that," Ferris kissed her again, his lips curving into a smile.
Wynona hugged Ferris tighter. "Good, because you didn't have a choice." She kissed his cheek and sat up slightly, looking down at Ferris. "Hey, have you talked to your grandmother yet?"
Ferris shook his head. "Not yet, no." He rubbed his face and groaned. "It's so hard when I'm still mad, you know?"
"Well, if you talk to her you probably won't be mad anymore, Ferris," Wynona pointed out.
He looked up at her and stroked her cheek. "Maybe, but I just can't right now."
Wynona frowned and Ferris could tell she had more to say but did not.
Ferris kept stroking her cheek. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course." Wynona smiled gently.
"Why were you put into an orphanage?" It was a question Ferris had been wanting to ask, but he wanted Wynona to be more comfortable with him first.
Wynona sat up straight, pushing Ferris's hand away. "Ah…" She nervously ran her fingers through her hair.
Ferris sat up and held her hand. "You don't have to tell me, Wynnie Bear."
"No, no," She smiled smally. "I can tell you, it's just not something I talk about a lot. If I'm being honest, I don't remember much of it." She brushed her hair over her shoulder and sighed heavily. "So I wasn't put in an orphanage. I was fostered then adopted."
"Oh." Ferris felt bad for assuming, but Wynona did not seem offended.
She continued, "My birth parents weren't the best. I remember them a little bit, but I don't remember much of the process. From what Andrea and Jonathan have told me they were extremely neglectful. I wouldn't know, but according to the case file there were days I wouldn't have food or was left unsupervised for days in a row."
"How did they get caught?" Ferris asked.
"That I don't know. I know I jumped between a couple of foster families before I came here. Then there was some long court thing to proceed with the adoption. I was adopted when I was seven or eight." Wynona did not look or sound very bothered by the story she was telling, which was a little surprising.
Ferris nodded his head, stroking Wynona's hand. "So why don't you know your birthday?"
Wynona shrugged her shoulders. "They never found my birth certificate or any records of my birth. Only people who know are my birth parents and I doubt they remember by now."
"This might sound weird, but none of this ever bothered you?" Ferris asked. He found it hard to believe that knowing all of that never made Wynona feel differently about herself. He knew she did not like hearing that question, but he hoped it was different that he was asking.
"I mean," Wynona looked down at her hand in Ferris'. "It wasn't that bad until I met Dallas."
"Dallas? What do you mean?" They hardly ever brought up Wynona's ex, but whenever his name came up Ferris became envious. The thought of her hugging or kissing another guy always made his blood boil, but he did his best not to show it.
Wynona suddenly looked sad. "I told him about it, and I don't know, I think he always saw me differently afterwards. It was a sore subject after that. Just snide remarks here and there." She fell silent.
Ferris clenched his jaw. An outburst was the last thing she needed so he bit his tongue and forced a smile. "Whatever he said was wrong, Wynnie. Dallas was an idiot, he didn't deserve you."
Wynona laughed. "And you do?"
"I think so." Ferris leaned in and kissed Wynona, moving his hand onto her cheek.
Wynona pulled back for a moment, stroking Ferris's ear causing him to shudder and smile. "I think so, too." She kissed him again.
Ferris quickly melted into the kiss and allowed his hands to wander up her back, through her hair, around her waist, wherever Wynona would let him. His heart fluttered, and a tingly sensation flooded his body as Wynona did the same. Ferris enjoyed every moment, but in the back of his mind was guilt and shame. He needed to fess up, but he did not want to. Why should he when everything was perfect? Why did he have to give it up over a stupid decision that did not matter anymore? Why did he have to feel guilty about it every time he held her hand, kissed her, or gazed in her eyes? Why could he not just have this and keep it? He did not want the answers, but he knew she would find out soon enough.
