It was pretty warm outside and Wynona regretted wearing the black sweatshirt she had taken from Ferris. It was the price to pay to satisfy Ferris at his game. It was not the first game she had gone to, but at all the other ones Wynona was not sure if Ferris was fine with people knowing about them so she kept her distance. As a result, Ferris pouted, complained, and assured her that he wanted everyone to know. Wynona could not help but cave.
Wynona went to the game with June, although she had to force her to come with her. All the other times she came alone and very rarely did Elijah come with her. Wynona was not sure how the game worked, but she liked watching Ferris play. He never looked at Wynona or waved because he was always so focused. She had never seen him so focused, not even when they worked on the project.
She could not lie and say Ferris did not look good in his uniform. It was the traditional baseball uniform with the school colors of purple and yellow. If Wynona had it her way she would definitely want Ferris in her room in his uniform.
"I can't believe you convinced me to come here." June shoved Wynona. "It's so hot, Wyn," She whined. "You know I get headaches easily."
Wynona glared at her for unknowingly pulling her out of her mind. "I told you to bring a hat, June." She turned back to watch Ferris who was in the process of throwing a ball to someone at first base. Wynona smiled smally to herself, getting lost in thought again.
June shook her shoulder. "Stop staring at your boyfriend's butt and talk to me."
"June!" It was hot outside, but Wynona's ears were hotter. "Shut up!"
She rolled her eyes. "How long is this game? When can we go home?"
Wynona was at her wits end with her and they had only just arrived. She was prepared to send her away, but she saw a familiar face looking for a seat. The person, a girl around her age, was squinting at Wynona. She had reddish brown hair and block glasses on. She was wearing a t-shirt that was a little too big for her and khaki shorts.
"Aimee?" Wynona waved.
Aimee smiled and waved back. She quickly made her way toward Wynona. "Hey, can I sit with you?"
Wynona nodded and forced June to make room for Aimee. She complained, but she moved, giving Wynona room to move. "I'm surprised you're here. You never come."
Aimee sat down beside Wynona and shrugged her shoulders awkwardly. "Yeah, Cole asked me to come."
"He did? I haven't seen him play yet." Wynona had her hand over her eyes to block the sun as she tried to look for Cole.
"He's the designated hitter in place of the pitcher. So he's not going to go until they switch." Aimee was scanning the field. She pointed. "Oh, there's Ferris. He's told me about his position, but I never understand it."
Wynona laughed and nodded. "Me too, but from what I've noticed he just runs around a lot and throws the ball." She turned back to the field and focused on Ferris. He was walking off the field so Wynona assumed they were switching.
Aimee fixed her glasses and pointed at the field again. "There's Cole."
"Huh?" Wynona tried to get a better look. It took her a while to find Cole, but she finally did when he was preparing to bat. He was in the same uniform as Ferris, except it looked slightly bigger on him. "Oh." She glanced at Aimee who was focused on Cole. "So Cole invited you?"
She nodded. "Yeah he asked me to come last night while we were on the phone."
"Why'd he invite you?" Wynona asked.
Aimee glanced at Wynona and chuckled. "Whatever you think is going on, you're wrong. Cole and I are good friends, but that's about it." She seemed very adamant, but Wynona was not buying it.
"I don't know," Wynona turned back to the field. "Sounds like he likes you."
Aimee was quiet for a while before she sighed. "Yeah, I know, but I think our friendship is more valuable than some risky relationship."
Wynona almost laughed at how logical she was being, but she was not shocked. "Obviously not to Cole if he's inviting you to his games. Isn't that considered a big deal for people in sports?"
"You know, maybe you don't understand the game because you never watch it," Aimee teased.
"Haha." Wynona rolled her eyes, but she took the hint.
"How's your little project with Ferris going? Isn't it next week?" Aimee asked.
Wynona nodded. "Yeah, for the most part everything is finished. Ferris is still pretty nervous to sing though. We already split the song for the duet and I can play the song perfectly, but I'm worried about him. He has a tendency to panic when things become overwhelming." She had tried to talk to Ferris about the performance, but Ferris was always quick to change the subject.
Aimee chuckled. "Don't worry he'll be there. The last thing he's going to want to do is disappoint you."
"Yeah, I know…" Wynona forced a smile. She hoped Aimee was right. She wanted to have faith in Ferris, but she still feared he might get scared and not show up. The chances of that were slim, but Wynona could not ignore the possibility of it happening.
They talked during the rest of the game but about less personal things. June would chime in every now and then, but mostly to complain about the heat or how long the game was taking. Wynona found it annoying, but Aimee found it more amusing than the game itself.
Once the game finally ended the weather had cooled down a bit. The teams had left to grab their things and leave. Aimee left first to go see Cole and Ferris. Wynona was going to go, but she wanted to buy something for Ferris at the concession stand before it closed.
"Are you going to come with me?" Wynona asked June as she stood up from the bleachers.
She shook her head. "No, I want to surprise Ferris. I'm gonna scare the crap out of him, watch." She snickered and quickly ran down the stairs and toward the direction Aimee had left in.
She was going to stop her, but it was better than her going with her and complaining. She was Ferris's problem now. Wynona got up and took out her wallet as she walked toward the stand. The line was not very long so Wynona did not have to wait long.
"Hey, what can we get you?" An older woman asked. She looked annoyed and exhausted.
Wynona felt bad for keeping her and scanned the menu quickly. "Can I get a, uh, grape popsicle, please?" Ferris loved all things that were grape flavored. Wynona thought it was disgusting, but she knew Ferris would appreciate it.
She walked away and quickly handed her the treat. Wynona paid and she practically snatched the money away from her. That was a bit frustrating, but she did not want to let a random woman ruin her mood. After all, she was about to see the one person who could make a rainy day feel sunny.
