Ferris walked off the field with Cole. He was taking a large gulp from his water as they walked to the dugout. Ferris did not bother changing since he had to shower. He packed his stuff and waited for Cole outside. As he waited Aimee came around the corner.
Ferris waved, but he was confused. "Hey, what are you doing here?"
"Cole invited me." Aimee smiled awkwardly. "You did a good job out there, though I'm not sure what you did exactly."
"Yeah, Wynnie says the same thing every time." Ferris smiled and chuckled.
"Hey, you came." Cole walked out and waved at Aimee.
Aimee waved back. "Good job out there."
Cole shrugged. "We still lost."
"I still think you did really well." Aimee smiled.
Ferris looked between the two of them. He had known them both for most of his life and suddenly he felt like a third wheel. "Um, are we all still hanging out?"
They both turned to him as if they forgot he was there.
Cole nodded. "Yeah, let's go to your place so I can shower."
"Yeah," Aimee took a step back. "You both need it."
Ferris rolled his eyes. "Thanks." He looked around and frowned. "I was hoping to see Wynnie before we left. I'd hate to leave after she came all this way to see me."
"Oh, I was sitting with her during the game," Aimee mentioned.
Ferris turned to her. "Did she say anything about me?"
"Nothing important."
"Ouch." Cole chimed in. He turned to Ferris. "Did you ever tell her the truth?"
Ferris looked down at his shoes. "No, not yet. I just don't see why I need to at this point."
"Maybe because you're actively lying to her?" Aimee fixed her glasses and crossed her arms over her chest.
"I'm not lying." Ferris glared at Aimee. "Just not telling her specific information."
Cole raised his eyebrows, unamused. "That's still lying, Ferris. You need to tell her."
"How do I even bring that up?" Ferris rubbed his temple. "Oh hey by the way, I was using you to date your sister."
Aimee sighed. "That's definitely one way not to do it."
"Exactly," Ferris dropped his hand at his side. "Again, I don't see why she needs to know if–"
"What?"
Ferris's heart dropped. Both Aimee and Cole's eyes were wide. Ferris quickly turned around. Oh God…
He started walking, "H–Hey, wait–"
A hard and loud slap connected with Ferris's face, turning his head to the side. It stung more than he could have imagined, but not because of the pain. "I–I can't believe you!"
He turned back. "June, let me explain, please."
"I think I've heard enough, Ferris!" She looked at him with so much anger. "What is wrong with you? Wyn cares about you so much and you're using her?"
"I'm not using her!" Ferris yelled. "Everything I feel for her is real."
June scoffed. "Oh, I'm just supposed to believe that when you've been lying since day one? She's supposed to believe that bull crap?" She shook her head. "You're crazy."
Ferris sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "I swear, I really care for her. The last thing I wanted–"
"Was to have feelings for her." June interrupted.
"I never wanted to hurt her, June. You have to believe me. Wynnie is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. Maybe my initial intentions were wrong, but my feelings now are real." Ferris tried to reach out to her but she swatted his hand away.
June shook her head and took a step back. "You better tell her the truth by the performance."
"June–"
"If you don't, Ferris, then I'll tell her for you. One way or another, Wyn is going to find out the truth. It's up to you if you want to take accountability or run away from the best thing that's ever happened to you." As she turned to leave, Wynona came around the corner.
Ferris's heart sank further. "June–"
"My head hurts." She glared back at Ferris. "I'm going to walk home."
Wynona looked at her confused. "Oh. Okay? I'll see you at home."
June quickly left, taking one last deathly glare at Ferris.
Ferris turned to Wynona. He was at a loss for words. Usually seeing Wynona made any bad thoughts go away but now Ferris only felt queasy.
Wynona walked up to him and frowned. "Everything okay? I know you just had a game, but you look pale."
"What?" Ferris barely understood her. "I–I'm fine. I just need to shower."
"Oh okay. Well, do you want to hang out after?" Wynona pulled Ferris closer and whispered in his ear. "I'd really like to see you in your uniform again."
Cole quickly chimed in, pulling Ferris away from Wynona. "Actually, the three of us had plans already."
Wynona playfully frowned and nodded. "Alright, well, I'll call you later. Bye." She quickly kissed Ferris, but Ferris did not kiss back. Wynona stopped and stared at him, confused. She seemed hesitant, but she left.
Ferris watched her walk around the corner. His heart was still pounding. "Oh God…"
"I tried to tell you." Cole placed both hands on the back of his neck and began to pace. "Jesus, this is so bad."
Aimee, who was usually calm and collected, looked spooked. "This is going to be such a problem for all of us."
Cole turned to Aimee. "Crap!"
Ferris shook his head. "N–No, I'll tell her you guys didn't know."
"That's not going to work." Cole looked at Ferris. "One, we're all in this together whether we like it or not. Second, June knows we know and I have a feeling she wants her to know the entire truth."
Ferris groaned and covered his face with his hands. "I'm such an idiot! Dammit!" He wished he fessed up sooner. He wished he had stopped making excuses. He wished he could go back and start over, because he knew what was next. He had to tell the truth and ultimately lose "the best thing that’s ever happened to him."
