Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Jan 28, 2026

The next day

The following morning, Kei arrived at the classroom early, as was her custom. The room was a sanctuary of morning stillness. She settled at her desk, moving with a quiet deliberation, and lowered her head onto the polished wood. With her earphones in and a soft melody insulating her from the world, she drifted into sleep. A gentle breeze drifted through the open window, dancing through her hair, while the golden morning sunlight filtered in, accompanied by the distant, rhythmic chirping of birds and the rustle of leaves.

Kei looked profoundly peaceful in her slumber a portrait of undisturbed grace.

The silence was punctuated by the sharp *click* of the door handle. A girl stepped inside: Yumi. Her long, chestnut-brown hair was styled with a delicate side braid and anchored by a bold black bow. She wore her school uniform beneath an oversized grey cardigan, her presence usually radiating the energy of a social butterfly.

Yumi navigated to her desk, which sat directly in front of Kei’s. She sat, but the silence of the room quickly became a burden. She scrolled through social media, her thumb moving restlessly over the screen, but the digital world offered no cure for her boredom. She tried to close her eyes, but sleep eluded her.

She was alone in the room with the silent, enigmatic Kei.

Curiosity, sharp and persistent, began to tug at her. She fought the urge to turn around, telling herself to mind her own business, but curiosity eventually won. When Yumi finally turned, she found herself breathless.

Bathed in the soft morning glow, Kei’s face was mesmerizing. Yumi felt frozen, her gaze drifting over the details she had never been close enough to see: lips as delicate as flower petals, a finely pointed nose, and pale, flawless skin. She traced the line of Kei’s dark eyelashes and the perfect arch of her eyebrows.

A sudden gust of wind swept through the room, dislodging a stray lock of hair across Kei’s face. Without thinking, Yumi stood up. She leaned in, closing the distance between them until she could almost feel the rhythm of Kei’s breathing. Her hand reached out slowly, tentatively and tucked the loose strand back into place.

The look in Yumi’s eyes was inexplicable, a depth of emotion that transcended words. A small, tender smile touched her lips. In the quiet of the room, the birds continued to sing, but their melody was drowned out by a different sound: the frantic, echoing thud of Yumi’s own heart.

*Klink.*

The door handle turned again.

As if struck by lightning, Yumi lunged back into her seat just as a group of classmates and friends spilled into the room. The newcomers paused for a heartbeat, sensing a strange, heavy atmosphere an “off” energy they couldn’t quite name before shaking it off and heading to their desks.

The room grew noisy with morning chatter, yet Kei remained lost in her dreams, oblivious to the secret moment that had just passed. Yumi, however, was uncharacteristically silent, her heart still racing against her ribs. Her friends cast worried glances her way, unsettled by the absence of her usual cheerful banter.

Soon, the class president, Fay, entered. She moved through the aisles, greeting everyone with a bright, cheer everyone, that is, except for Kei. Whether fueled by lingering resentment or a deliberate choice, Fay ignored the sleeping girl entirely, taking her seat to chat with her inner circle.

Eventually, Kei stirred. She blinked her eyes open, realizing the room was now full. She spotted Fay nearby and her lips parted, an unspoken word forming on her tongue but she was interrupted by the soft *thud* of a fallen eraser.

Kei leaned down, retrieved the object and offered it to its owner: Yumi.

As Yumi took the eraser, her eyes locked onto Kei’s. The world seemed to slow down. Seconds stretched into a long, heavy silence as they stared at one another, unaware that Yumi’s friends were watching the exchange with growing intrigue.

Breaking the spell, Yumi flashed a radiant, brilliant smile. “Good morning,” she chirped.

Kei, ever the stoic, gave a nonchalant nod. “Oh. Morning.”

She had no idea that Fay had seen the entire exchange and heard every word.
