Wolfsbane. The word echoed in Kyle's head as he struggled to control his sudden outburst of anger and fear. He took a deep breath and stepped away from the twins as he tried to get a hold of his emotions. He looked up at Anastasia who was staring at Benny in fear, a question on her face that set Kyle's stomach turning.
“Did you take it too?” She asked, voicing the question that Kyle was too fearful to hear the answer to.
“NO!” Josie yelled out, “He didn't! We didn't give it to him.”
“But you took it?” Kyle shouted, unable to hold himself back any longer.
He was angry, more angry than he had been in a long time. How could they do something so stupid, he thought to himself. He ran his hands through his inky black hair and tried once again to get his emotions in control.
“No, nevermind. We can't do this now. Let's get back and get Robyn to have a look at you.” Kyle said, as he turned towards the twins, “We'll talk about this at home.”
The twins cried silently as Kyle gently helped them out of the cave, passing them to Anastasia one by one. He climbed out after them and carried Annie in his arms, careful not to move her broken leg too much. He gestured to Anastasia and she nodded grabbing the first aid kit and picking up Benny.
The walk home was filled with silence and even the bubbly five year old kept quiet, sensing that now was not the time for stories about fairies.
Wolfsbane was a dangerous and addictive drug that had been used by rogue werewolves for centuries. It greatly enhances strength and speed for short periods of time, making anyone twice as strong as an alpha, but was extremely addictive and damaging to the body. Just a single use could cause addiction and negative side effects ranging from headaches, internal bleeding and even death.
Despite how dangerous it was, wolfsbane was commonly used by rogue werewolves to give themselves an edge when fighting against and disrupting wolf packs. They didn't care about the negative effects and only wanted the thrill of the fight and constantly sought out new packs to fight and werewolves to kill. And it was because of them that wolfsbane was always in production by the goblin tribes who would do anything for money.
Kyle tried to think about where the pups could have possibly gotten their hands on wolfsbane. The woods their hotel was in was far away from any major city or any other kind of non-human settlement. There weren't any goblin tribes in their vicinity and the goblins were not stupid enough to venture so close to a wolf packs homestead, especially if they were producing wolfsbane that was outlawed among all wolf packs.
So then how did the pups get their hands on it? The question plagued Kyle all the way home and it took everything in him not to immediately question the twins.
They are scared and shaken by what happened, Kyle told himself, you need to be calm and firm when you ask them about it.
If there's a chance that there were any goblins selling wolfsbane nearby, Kyle knew he would have to get rid of them.
No matter what it took.
When they reached the hotel the twins were passed out and were feverish, but luckily Robyn was already back from fishing and immediately sprung into action. Benny had fallen asleep, exhausted from all the excitement and Anastasia had set him down.
Kyle watched Robyn working, wondering how he should pose the question he wanted to ask without offending his packmate. Robyn pushed her black plaid shirt sleeves up to her elbows and made quick work of the twins' injuries, her grey skin lightly covered with a thin sheen of sweat as she tied up her white hair. The short ivory horns on her forehead gleamed slightly in the fading afternoon light, as if to remind Kyle that Robyn was half goblin and would know what to do and how to contact whoever sold the wolfsbane.
Just as she was done setting the twins bones and bandaging them up, Gareth burst into the hotel, his freckled cheeks flushed as red as his hair. The hulking werewolf wore a brown knitted sweater that strained over his large arms. He'd been out in the woods collecting firewood when everything happened, although on a completely opposite side from the pups. Kyle figured he had probably sensed that there was a problem and upon his return home had smelled the twins blood.
It wouldn't be long before the rest of the pack returns too, Kyle thought, they would also sense something was wrong.
“What happened?” Gareth yelled, “Are my sisters alright?” All the colour drained from his face as he took in their injuries and he sat down weakly in a chair.
Anastasia quickly filled him in on what happened, how they fell into the cave while play hunting. After she was done she looked at Kyle and he nodded.
“I'll take it from here,” he said.
By that time Steven, Devon and Katie had also returned from their supply run and were waiting to hear the rest. The wolf pack was on edge as they could immediately sense that something was wrong and it wasn't just a few broken bones.
“It's really bad,” Kyle said calmly, his instincts kicking in and giving him a clear head as he spoke to his pack as their leader.
If you knew him you would know that there is nothing Kyle wouldn't do for his pack. A born leader who is faced with a new problem when suddenly two of his packmates go missing. All signs point to their sworn enemy and the main cause behind their problems, the vampires.
But when the search for them leads instead to answers he never knew he needed, Kyle is left questioning everything he ever thought he knew about what it means to be a werewolf.
