The restaurant was slightly warm, and Julieta draped her jacket over the back of her chair. After the waiter took their order, Deborah abruptly said, “So you two broke up, huh?”
Julieta straightened at the unexpected question. She frowned. “How did you know?”
“It’s a small office. News spreads. And as you know, I’m always by the water cooler,” Deborah said.
“I was hoping to keep it under wraps, but you’re right. I mean, I even took off my engagement ring. It would have been strange if no one noticed,” Julieta replied.
“That’s a good sign. I’m happy for you,” Deborah said, her lips curving in a gentle, reassuring smile as she rested her chin on her hands.
“Deborah, usually a person would offer their regrets when they find out someone broke up with their fiancée,” Julieta said.
“As your friend, I don’t think this is something terrible. Breakups happen. Divorce happens. Trust me—I’ve been married five times.”
The waiter approached with two bowls of noodles. He smiled politely as he set them down. Julieta noticed his gold crescent-moon earring.
She exhaled. Great—her family, Deborah, the entire office, and now even the waiter knew about the breakup. She rubbed her forehead. This would be a long day.
Should I just email-blast the breakup to the entire world and get it over with? The idea flashed through her mind, equal parts bitter and exhausted.
“Eat,” Deborah said. “Your noodles will get cold.”
To avoid any further conversation, Julieta complied.
