She walked outside with him and closed the door behind her. As she stood in front of the door, she saw him walk away for the last time. He was carrying the ring box and placed it into his pocket.

Her neighbor asked her if she was okay, and she simply gave her a weak smile with a nod.

She slowly opened the door back into her apartment and locked the door behind her.

By returning the ring, she had accepted that their relationship was over.  She had expected more from their conversation. An honest conversation was probably too much for him and would not have given her enough information to understand his actions.

She quickly texted her sister to say he had picked up the ring. Also, she was taking some time off, and she would text her tomorrow.
