Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Feb 06, 2026

The morning air felt suspiciously light. For the first time in years, Kei didn't wake up to the sound of her father's heavy, uneven footsteps or the muffled, sharp tone of an argument vibrating through the drywall. The house was silent haunted, perhaps, but peaceful.

She stood in front of the bathroom mirror, carefully adjusting her bangs. The gash on her forehead was hidden behind a thick bandage, the white gauze stark against her pale skin. She looked at her reflection and felt a strange, quiet sense of victory. The "monster" was gone. She had protected her mother.

On her left wrist, the gold bracelet Fay had given her glinted in the bathroom light. It felt like a badge of a new life.

Class 2-A was humming with the usual morning energy. Usually, Kei was a ghost in this room, a "nonchalant loner" who sat in the back and stared at the clock. But today, the room felt like a sanctuary.

"Kei! You're here!"

Fay's voice cut through the chatter. She wasn't at her own desk; she was leaning against the row in front of Kei's, her hair bouncing as she turned. Her eyes immediately locked onto the bandage on Kei's forehead.

"Your head!" Fay hissed, her voice a mix of worry and Class President authority. She leaned in close, the scent of her floral perfume wrapping around Kei like a blanket. "Kei, what happened? You were fine when I dropped you off!"

Kei kept her expression neutral, though her heart was drumming against her ribs. "I told you, I'm clumsy. I was clearing out some old clutter last night getting rid of things we don't need anymore and a vase caught me. It looks much worse than it is, Fay. Honestly."

Fay's brow furrowed. She reached out, her fingers hovering just an inch away from the gauze. "A vase? Kei, we are going to the infirmary during the first break. No arguments."

"Fay," Kei said softly, stepping just an inch closer into Fay's personal space. It was a bold move for her. "I'm fine. The house is... it's quiet now. I'm actually okay."

Fay studied her for a long moment. She didn't know about the blood on the hardwood or the "Get Out" scream, but she could see the change in Kei's posture. The weight was gone. Fay pouted, but her worry melted into a tender, stubborn glow.

"Fine. But I'm checking it again at lunch. You're... important property, you know?"

Kei felt a flush of heat creep up her neck. "Property?"

"The matching-bracelet kind of property," Fay teased, lifting her own wrist to show the gold band shining in the sun. She beamed when she saw the twin band on Kei's wrist. "You're wearing it. I thought you might have tucked it in a drawer."

"It has a nice weight to it," Kei murmured, looking down at her desk to hide her growing smile.

The rest of the morning was a blur of secret glances. During History, Fay "accidentally" dropped a folded note on Kei's desk while running an errand for the teacher.

"You look cute when you're daydreaming. Meet me behind the gym for lunch? My treat."

Kei tucked the note into her pocket, her heart doing a slow, unfamiliar roll.

At the lockers before lunch, they ran into Len and Angel. Usually, the three of them Fay, Len, and Angel were inseparable, but today, the air between the two childhood friends felt heavy and stagnant.

Len was staring at her shoes, her hands clutching her bag strap so tightly her knuckles were white. Angel stood a few feet away, leaning against a locker with her jaw set tight. They weren't fighting, but they weren't talking either. It was the kind of silence that happens when two people realize their feelings are changing and they don't know how to fix it.

"Hey," Fay said, sensing the chill. "Are you guys coming to lunch?"

"I think I'm going to head to the library," Len said quietly, not looking up. "I have... studying to do."

Angel let out a short, dry breath. "Yeah. I'm going to the rooftop. See ya."

As they walked away in opposite directions, Fay sighed, turning back to Kei. "They've been like that since yesterday. I've known them since we were kids, and they've never been this... awkward. It's like they're afraid to look at each other."

Kei looked at the gold bracelet on her wrist. She thought about her own house how it was finally quiet. "Maybe they're just figuring things out, Fay. Sometimes you have to be distant to see the full picture."

Fay looked at Kei, her expression softening into that "yearner's gaze" again. She reached out and hooked her pinky finger with Kei's. "Well, I don't want to be distant. I want to be right here."

The afternoon was perfect. Behind the gym, hidden from the rest of the school, Fay shared her lunch with Kei. They sat close, their shoulders touching, talking about nothing and everything. Fay laughed at Kei's dry wit, and Kei found herself actually laughing back.

When the final bell rang, Fay walked Kei all the way to the school gates.

"See you tomorrow?" Fay asked, her eyes hopeful.

"See you tomorrow," Kei replied.

As Kei walked home, she touched the bandage on her forehead. The pain was there, but for the first time, it didn't feel like a burden. She felt like a normal girl. She felt like someone who could be loved.

She walked into her house, and for once, the air was warm. Her mother was in the kitchen, humming a low tune as she cooked a simple meal. No debt collectors. No shouting. Just the two of them.

Kei sat at the table and looked at the gold bracelet, a small, genuine smile on her face. She was happy. She was safe.
