Smart was sitting by the window, staring at the clouds as if lost in another world.
A phone ring pulled him out of the little bubble he had wrapped himself in. It was Ren.
Smart hesitated, staring at the screen, unsure if he wanted to answer. But a message came through almost immediately:
"If you don’t pick up your phone again, I’ll come up there and drag you down myself."
Before he could finish reading, Ren called again. Smart replied in a half whisper:
— Hi, Ren…
"Be ready and come downstairs," Ren said, his voice commanding.
— Down? Why should I come down? — Smart murmured, clearly in a stubborn mood.
"If you don’t come down in ten minutes, I’ll be at your door," Ren replied, hanging up.
Smart hadn’t left the house for days. Since that night at the “Light Pub,” he had been completely lost in himself and had no desire to do anything. He wanted to stay alone, making sure he wouldn’t trouble anyone with his sadness.
He knew that being around Ren and Han during these days might bore them with his presence. So he preferred to endure this inner discomfort on his own.
Zoi had tried many times to calm him and make him feel better. Of course, Smart felt happy in her presence, and she had been a great support. But many days had passed, and it was time for him to return to reality. That’s why Ren had decided not to leave him in that state any longer.
Smart hurried to get ready in less than 10 minutes. He put on a beige sporty tracksuit: loose joggers and a hoodie with the hood covering his messy hair. He slipped on his sneakers and was about to leave when Zoi grabbed him from behind.
— Finally, you came out of your room! — she said, hugging him warmly as if years had passed since they last saw each other.
— Oh god, enough! You’re taking my breath away, let me go! — he replied, and ran off.
Ren had stepped out of the car, lit a cigarette, and was waiting for Smart to get out. A few moments later, Smart appeared, looking tired.
Ren put out his cigarette and said:
— Come on, hurry up, get in the car.
As Ren started the engine, Smart asked in a quiet, lost voice:
— Where are we going?
— To a zoo. I heard a lion was hungry, so I thought I’d bring you for some “food,” — Ren joked, speeding up the car a bit.
A few minutes later, they arrived at a very pleasant place. It was a small park, with a fantastic atmosphere, and the air was so fresh it felt endless.
— Let’s sit outside — Ren said, looking at the sky. — Look, it’s even your favorite weather: gray clouds.
They settled in a spot with a beautiful view to enjoy the surroundings. Smart ordered a macchiato, as usual, while Ren got an iced americano.
— Ren, where’s Han? Why didn’t you bring him? — Smart asked, his voice still carrying a hint of sadness.
— I didn’t bring him because I thought it would be better if it was just the two of us. That way, we could talk more calmly
— Ren said, lighting his cigarette to accompany his iced americano.
— With Han around, it would have been impossible to focus on a conversation. You know him; he’s just trouble.
— Ah, okay… — Smart let out softly.
Ren pulled out his phone and took a picture of the table, ready to send it to Leo
Meanwhile, Leo hadn’t gotten up yet. The dark curtains blocked the sunlight, but a phone notification woke him
He grabbed the phone and, seeing the photo from Ren, his eyes widened
— Hmmm… who are you out with so early in the morning? — he thought, starting to type a reply.
✉️
What are you doing? Where are you?
Ren smiled, unable to hide it. Smart leaned forward to see. Ren leaned back and typed:
✉️ Miss me? ☺️ If you’re missing me too much… wanna see a pic?
✉️ Not at all 🤨… Answer my question.
Ren noticed his irritation and felt a rush of satisfaction.
✉️ I’m out with a friend
✉️ Friend? Or…?
Ren tilted his lips into a teasing smile and typed:
✉️ Why… are you jealous?
Leo leaned back slightly on the bed, trying to stay calm.
✉️ Don’t mess with me.
Ren’s eyes sparkled with delight as he continued the game.
✉️ So… what are you thinking??
Leo raised an eyebrow, annoyed.
✉️ Don’t play with me, or I’ll come there.
Ren bit his lip, overcome by an uncontrollable desire to have him close, and typed without thinking:
✉️ I’ll send you the address… I want you here now, right in front of me…
Leo held his phone. The moment he saw Ren’s message, a wave of emotion almost overwhelmed him
He smiled like a fool without realizing. He caught himself and wiped the smile off his face
For a moment he thought: Let’s get ready and tease him a little…
✉️ Coming… since you’ve missed me.
He got up to get ready. Ren was smiling to herself, and when she lifted her head, her eyes locked with Smart’s. He had almost forgotten he was right there in front of him.
Smart rested his hands on the table, his face in his palms, watching her every move with curiosity and surprise
He wanted to know exactly what was going on.
With a teasing sparkle in his eyes, he said:
— Go on… I’m waiting.
— So… who’s that guy??
Ren moved a little closer to Smart and said in a low voice:
— That guy’s name is Leo… and I’m almost losing my mind over him
I can’t explain how cute he is.
Meanwhile, in Ren’s mind, he pictured the moment he had leaned close to Leo’s face, the cigarette smoke curling between them, filling the space with an almost electric tension
Only this moment flashed through his mind, and he was almost overwhelmed by the emotions.
Smart smiled lightly and, looking into his eyes, said:
— I want to meet that guy who got you like this — and he gave him a playful wink.
— You’ll meet him soon, he’s coming, — Ren said, glancing at the clock. He seemed almost too eager to see him.
— Now tell me, — Ren continued, — how have you been these past few days?
Smart picked up his macchiato, licked his lips, and forced a small smile:
— I’ve been fine… don’t worry, I just wanted some time to myself.
But in reality, he was almost in a state of depression. He just wanted to sleep every day, to forget everything… to forget that person’s face. Every day he wanted to go to the window and scream to release the stress. That night had left him with a deep pain.
— Smart, I know you haven’t been feeling well
You don’t need to lie to me
I know you very well, and I know how sensitive you are… how deeply you feel things
You might not want to talk, and you might keep things inside, but I’m here for you… to listen and to be part of what you’re going through, — Ren said, gently stroking his hair.
Smart, precisely for these words, needed this, and tears rolled down his cheeks. He was on the verge of crying openly, ready to release all the empty days he had spent without shedding a single tear.
Ren took his hand with one hand, gently rubbing it to show that he wasn’t alone, while with the other hand, he wiped his tears and said in a low voice:
— Please… stop. You’re making that face look ugly.
Meanwhile, Leo had just arrived and saw the entire scene from his car. And there, in that moment, the air felt heavy around him. It seemed as if everything was about to reset to zero.
Smart, half-European, half-Chinese, travels to China to chase his hip hop dream.
