Chapter Thirteen: The Dinner Invitation

Chapter Thirteen: The Dinner Invitation

Feb 12, 2026

The boardroom had tested them, but the echoes of that clash lingered long after the mahogany doors closed. Thripthi carried herself with her usual calm, but beneath the surface, her pulse still raced. She had stood her ground before the board, and Dev had defended her — but the weight of his words, “I don’t hire shadows,” replayed in her mind like a refrain she couldn’t silence.
Zenith Global’s corridors were quieter that evening. Most employees had left, their footsteps fading into the city’s hum. Thripthi remained at her desk, organizing files, her pen tapping against the edge of a folder. She was still replaying the boardroom scene when a shadow fell across her desk.
Dev stood there, his presence filling the space as effortlessly as it had filled the boardroom. His tone was measured, but softer than usual.
Dev: “You handled yourself well today.”
Thripthi (smiling faintly): “Handled myself? I thought I handled us.”
The corner of his mouth twitched, almost a smile, but not quite. He slid a card across her desk — embossed, elegant, the kind of thing only Dev would carry.
Dev: “Dinner. Tomorrow. No boardroom. Just us.”
It wasn’t an order. It wasn’t even a request. It was an invitation — one that carried more weight than either of them wanted to admit.

The Dinner
The restaurant was quiet, dimly lit, with soft jazz humming in the background. Thripthi arrived in a navy dress, understated yet striking. Dev was already seated, his posture as composed as ever, but his eyes softened when they met hers.
Thripthi (teasing): “So, Mr. Dev, do you always mix business with pleasure?”
Dev (leaning forward): “Only when business becomes… unavoidable.”
Her laugh was light, but her eyes betrayed curiosity. They spoke first of neutral things — travel, books, the city’s chaos. But slowly, the conversation shifted.

Thripthi: “You live by discipline. By control. But don’t you ever wonder if solitude is just another kind of weakness?”
Dev (pausing): “Weakness? Or protection?”
Thripthi (softly): “Protection from what?”
Dev (after a long silence): “From needing someone.”
The words hung between them, heavier than the wine in their glasses. Thripthi studied him, realizing that beneath the steel exterior was a man who had built walls so high, even he couldn’t see over them.

The Tension
The waiter cleared their plates, leaving only the flicker of candlelight between them.
Thripthi: “You think this is all coincidence? Us, here, now?”
Dev (quietly): “No. I think it’s choice. Mine.”
Thripthi (challenging): “And mine?”
Dev (leaning back, gaze unwavering): “Still undecided.”
Her breath caught. The air between them was thick with unspoken promises, with the kind of tension that could ignite or destroy.

The Drive Home
When dinner ended, Dev insisted on dropping her home. It was the first time she had seen him outside the confines of Zenith’s walls, behind the wheel of his sleek black car. The city lights blurred past as silence filled the space between them.
Thripthi (softly): “You don’t usually do this, do you?”
Dev (eyes on the road): “Do what?”
Thripthi: “Drive someone home. Break routine.”
Dev (after a pause): “No. I don’t.”

The car slowed in front of her apartment. For a moment, neither moved.
Thripthi (smiling faintly): “Thank you… for tonight.”
Dev (quietly, almost reluctant): “It won’t be the last.”
She stepped out, her heels clicking against the pavement, but the weight of his words followed her up the stairs.
Thripthi’s Journal
Later that night, Thripthi sat by her desk, pen hovering over her journal. She scribbled quickly, her thoughts tumbling onto the page.
“Why does he make everything feel like a question?” she wrote.
“Tonight wasn’t about business. It wasn’t about power. It was about him. And me. And something I don’t want to name yet.”
She closed the journal, pressing her palm against its cover, as if sealing away a secret she wasn’t ready to share.
Dev’s Study
Dev, meanwhile, returned to his study. The lamp cast its glow over the same shelves of books, but tonight, he wasn’t tracing the spine of Discipline is Destiny. He was staring at the empty chair across from him, imagining her laughter echoing in the silence.
He leaned back, exhaling slowly. For years, solitude had been his fortress. But tonight, for the first time, he wondered if solitude was simply another kind of prison.
Dev (murmuring into the quiet): “She makes everything real.”
Closing Scene
Thripthi whispered to herself as she turned off the light:
Thripthi: “He’s not just steel and silence. He’s human. And maybe… dangerously so.”
Chapter Thirteen wasn’t about the boardroom. It was about the first glimpse of vulnerability — the kind that could change everything.
