I was in a room with no windows or an escape route. Darkness was everywhere like an empty void, but somehow I could see. I couldn’t tell if there were floors underneath my feet. Dark water reached up to my calves, but no one answered.
Clearly, I’m all alone. My only way to find my way out was through these doors. I walked to the first door in front of me.
Black oak doors that seemed to be pulling me to it. I placed my hand on the doorknob, not quite ready for whatever was behind it.
I took a deep breath, then yanked it open.
“Ari?” A little mall girl with brown hair stared back at me. She had pale skin, wide gray eyes that seemed too big for her small face, and her bangs hid the curse mark.
This was Reika when she was little. Her pink shirt was ripped from the shoulder. The door led me to our orphanage bedroom. Ten beds lined the walls.
Reika sat on the floor fiddling with a ball.
“Are you okay, Ari? Did Michelle say to stay away from me again?” she asked me, her small face ready to cry. I walked inside the room and sat down on my knees in front of her.
“No matter what someone says. I’ll never leave you,” I told her as I gave her a warm smile. She smiled at me happily. She turned her attention back to the colorful ball, pushing it around with her finger.
“What would you- do, Ari, if I died?” She asked me. I flinched back from her wide, crazy eyes.
“What are you talking about?’ I asked, sounding breathless. She didn’t look at me as she repeated once more, but more slowly.
“What Would. You. Do. If. I. Died?”
“I don't know,” I said, but it was barely audible. Reika snapped, pushing the ball around and slowly met my eyes. Her left eye was swollen with blood running down her cheek.
She got up suddenly, a cynical smile spreading on her small face. Sending chills down my spine, then she ran to the window in the back of the room and jumped out.
