The guilt would follow me no matter what. I closed my eyes for a minute. When I open my eyes, which hand I will look at will be the way. I touched my mom's locket on my chest and closed my eyes.
"Mom," I whispered.
My mom's face came to my mind. Clearly, as if it were happening today, she whipped up chocolate ice cream and smiled at me. Her face slowly changed to Alex's face. He was looking at Mom's recipe book in his left hand and whipping the cream in his right. I opened my eyes, and it landed on the number.
A twelve-year-old who had been pampered till that day was forced to grow up. He had done enough. It was my turn now. If I spend a single day outliving him, I would never forgive myself.
Ever.
I turned towards the phone and dialed the number. It only took two rings for him to answer.
"Devlin," A strong voice bloomed, and its chill continued to my neck.
Even though we had been there in the same premises a few times, I never met him personally or even knew what he looked like, but I heard a ton about him. Not even a single one was a fairytale.
I took a moment to speak, and he cut the call. I looked at the phone in disbelief.
"Really?" I huffed.
I dialed again and didn't take a moment to prepare myself like last time.
"Devlin Declan, I want to meet you." I faked my confidence.
"So you didn't take the flight like your brother advised. Smart move. But I will deal this with your father. And your brother." His voice held no emotion.
But on the other hand, I was feeling so much. Devlin not only knew who I was but also knew about the escape. So I was right about not leaving the country.
How did he know it was me? He would get calls every day. I didn't ask him that.
"So, can we meet?" I was hoping Ben's insight was right.
"No." He cut the phone.
I looked at the phone again in disbelief. I felt all sadness and fear melt away due to my rage. No one in my life dismissed me like that. This asshole. What did he think about himself?
"You fucker!" I yelled.
A few people walking near me peeked at me. I dialed again.
"Don't you dare cut me like that again," I said through my teeth.
He cut the line before I finished. I dialed, but he didn't pick up this time. I put the receiver down harshly and took the phone my brother gave me. I typed halfway and deleted it again.
I walked back and forth in front of the payphone, expecting it to ring. Was Ben wrong?
"You see, Devlin never looked at me, even when I was sitting in front of him." Ben pouted.
"He must have heard about you," Kevin smirked.
"Or because it's a business meeting. Your father was next to you." I kicked Kevin in his leg.
"Nah. I will look at what he wants, even if it has an owner near him. He takes what he likes without missing a beat. I don't like me." Ben drank the whole glass of wine.
"Yeah, I'd heard about it. If he sees something he likes, he will do anything it takes to get it. The fact is, he has a taste, and you are not up to his mark. If he likes what he sees, he will look at it. My poor, unattractive Ben." Kevin winked at Ben.
"Kevin!" Alex warned.
I shook my head. I bit my lips. If I wanted my plan work, I had to do it properly. I glanced at the clock. My flight left ten minutes ago. An officer appeared out of nowhere a few meters away. I might have been giving them mixed signals.
"Two phone calls."
Then I should get out of the airport on my own. If I came across the youngest Declan, then it was for not listening to my brother. If I done as I planned, then I would get a chance to save my family.
"Call one. Ande." I dialed the most registered number in my brain.
"Yes, honey. Tell me. What kind of model do you need so that we can finalize this proposal and..." Ande's sleepy voice gave me the strength I needed right now.
"Wake up from your negotiation dream into the nightmare." I wiped my face and looked at the officer in the corner.
"Acing? What? Acing?"
"I want someone to do whatever I say as if they are under my spell."
"All of us are under it anyway." He chuckled.
"Not the eldest Declan." I narrowed my eyes.
"The who?" Ande screamed enough for the officer to hear.
"Get Kevin ready. I can't call him. I want to look my best. Get the most complimented outfit of mine. No. Go for something that gets anyone on their knees. I want him to beg me." I closed my eyes to keep the anger inside.
"Ace, Kid. You know who he is, right?"
"Since when did I worry about men like them? All they ever saw in me was my look anyway—they never bothered to see anything else. Once they saw me, they wanted to do anything to make me happy. Once I blew them a kiss, they knelt in front of me."
"As far as I know, you never been with anyone. Flirting with them in public is different than what you have in mind."
"I have no choice. I'll be there in an hour." I cut the phone before he denied.
"Call two. Devlin."
If he didn't pick this, I had to take the cab. If he did...
"Still want to meet me?"
Forget about the neck. Devlin's voice chilled my spine this time.
"Yes. Wherever you want me to come, send your personal car. If you are scared to meet me, then don't. You know where I am."
Once I rapped out what I wanted to say, I cut the phone before he did.
