I got up and walked towards the window as my vision blacked out. Slowly, I looked down where Reika should’ve been, but there was nothing. I searched around for her body, but there was not even a speck of blood anywhere. I walked back to where Reika was.
“You killed me,” someone accused behind me. I turned around, but no one was there.
“Reika?” Is that you?”
“You killed me!” the little girl yelled behind me, and I turned around, but there was nothing. Then it went quiet, only the sound of breathing echoed in the walls.
Suddenly, Reika appeared in front of me, covered in blood and smiling at me from ear to ear. I screamed out loud and ran out the door I came from and shut it tight behind me.
What was that?
Why?
Why did she...
Why was she...
I rubbed my face and looked at the other doors.
Does every one of them have something like that behind it?
I need to get out of here. I walked to the second door and opened it. It was dark in the room, which was clearly meant to say ‘No Exit Here’. I closed the door before anything would come flying out.
Maybe there’s a door that looks different from the others?
I walked past the maze of doors around me. I stopped and looked at the doors, then kept moving on.
To my realization, more and more doors would appear.
The small waves crashed against my calves. The sound of someone humming a soft tune echoed around me. I looked around to see where the source of the sound came from. I rubbed my arms as goosebumps rose. I kept walking and looking for a different door.
What if there isn’t one?
What if I’m just stuck here and just aimlessly searching?
A light suddenly hit my eyes. Blinding me. I shielded my eyes with my arm, then slowly opened them to see a white door that was bouncing off light, wherever that was coming from.
A white door?
That wasn’t here before...
I glanced behind me to notice that all the black doors were gone.
Weren’t they just there behind me?
The sound of the handle turning snapped my attention to the door. The door creaked open, and I braced myself for whatever was going to pop out.
A heartbeat passed... Two passed... Nothing came out.
Do I have a choice but to go in there?
I pushed the door open and shielded my eyes from the light.
The scent of fresh food watered my mouth. I lowered my arm and found myself in a dining room. There was so much food on the long table. Chandeliers lit by small fires danced around the walls. Fire crackled in the fireplace, which was in front of the dining room.
Beyond that, the walls surrounded me. There were no decorations or pictures. Only the food and fire showed signs of any life here.
Just where am I?
“Hello?” I called out. “Anyone here?” But no one replied.
Is the food real?
The sudden thought of it being poisonous made me step away from it. The air around me suddenly went cold as the sound of high heels hitting the white marble floor echoed.
I knew at that moment that if I turned around and made eye contact with whoever was behind me, I would be dead.
