Once Silence Learned to Love

EPISODE 10 When Hope Knocked Softly

EPISODE 10 When Hope Knocked Softly

Feb 23, 2026

Morning arrived quietly.
No dramatic sunrise. No sudden clarity. Just the familiar sound of the city waking up—distant horns, a vendor calling out, a pressure cooker whistling somewhere nearby.
Arohi stood near the window, tying her hair slowly.
She replayed last night’s message once in her head, then deliberately stopped herself. She had learned, over time, that holding onto moments too tightly often ruined them.
Still, something had shifted.
At breakfast, her father folded the newspaper and looked at her for a second longer than usual.
“You seem lighter today,” he said.
Arohi paused mid-bite. “Do I?”
“Yes,” her mother said, joining in. “Like you slept better.”
Arohi shrugged. “Maybe I did.”
It wasn’t a lie. Not entirely.
She picked up her bag and left for work.
Kabir was already running late.
He hadn’t planned to be. He just stood longer than necessary in front of the mirror, adjusting his watch strap twice for no reason at all.
His sister noticed.
“You’re smiling,” she said from the doorway.
“I am not.”
“You are,” she insisted. “It’s annoying.”
He picked up his keys. “I’m leaving.”
“Dinner tonight?” she asked.
He hesitated. “I’ll try.”
She laughed. “That’s your favorite lie.”
The day passed without incident.
No messages. No meetings. No coincidences.
And yet, both of them felt oddly aware—like something unfinished was waiting.
It was almost evening when Arohi stepped out of her office building and saw him.
Kabir stood near the gate, phone in hand, clearly unsure whether he should be there.
She slowed down.
He noticed her and straightened instinctively.
“Oh,” he said. “Hi.”
“Hi,” she replied.
A pause. Not uncomfortable. Just careful.
“I was in the area,” he said quickly. “Thought I’d return this.”
He handed her a small notebook.
Her eyebrows furrowed. “That’s mine.”
“You dropped it near the store yesterday,” he said. “I didn’t open it.”
She believed him.
“Thank you,” she said, holding it close.
They stood there, neither in a hurry to leave.
“Do you…” Kabir began, then stopped.
She waited.
“Do you ever feel,” he tried again, “like some days are louder inside than outside?”
Arohi looked at him.
“Yes,” she said softly. “Most days.”
He nodded. That was enough.
They walked a short distance together.
Arohi stopped near the bus stand.
“This is me.”
Kabir glanced at the approaching bus. “I know.”
She smiled. “See you around?”
“Yes,” he said. “I think… yes.”
She boarded the bus.
From the window, she saw him still standing there, watching—not her, but the bus moving away.
For the first time, the thought didn’t scare her.
It felt… possible.
That night, Arohi opened her notebook.
Between work notes and random lists, she found a page she didn’t remember writing.
Some connections don’t arrive loudly.
They wait to be noticed.
She didn’t tear the page out.
She closed the notebook gently.
Kabir sat at the dinner table later than usual.
His mother placed food in front of him without asking questions.
“You look peaceful,” she said.
He considered that.
“Maybe,” he replied.
She smiled, satisfied.
Later, alone in his room, his phone buzzed.
A message.
Thank you for bringing the notebook back.
— Arohi
He stared at it for a long moment.
Then replied—
Anytime.
He placed the phone face down.
Hope didn’t feel like a promise.
It felt like a door—slightly open.
And this time, neither of them closed it.

Some love stories are not loud.
They grow in silence, breathe in pauses,
and hurt in ways words can’t explain.
Once Silence Learned to Love is a story of two souls
who met without promises,
but stayed because silence understood them better than words ever could.
