Chapter Nine: Frank

Chapter Nine: Frank

Mar 05, 2026

About an hour after the ball began, the lights suddenly dimmed. Then the stage lit up, drawing everyone’s attention.

“Welcome, everyone, to the Yan family’s ball. Are you enjoying yourselves?” The man on stage was impeccably dressed, wearing a crimson mask and holding a microphone.

The crowd cheered obligingly.

“I am Yan Yaonan, the host of tonight’s event. Next, let’s play a few small games to liven up the atmosphere. We’ll start with something simple.”

A box was carried onto the table in front of Yan Yaonan.

“The game is called Ultimate Code. I’m sure many of you have played it before. This box contains many numbered balls. I’ll draw one as the target number. Whoever guesses it wins. There are ten slots for this game—first come, first served.”

“Is there a prize?” someone from the audience asked.

“Of course. The winner will receive two thousand Galt,” Yan Yaonan replied with a smile.

Two thousand Galt—roughly a month’s salary for a blue-collar worker.

Hands shot up throughout the hall, though some people showed little interest. Yan Yaonan selected the ten fastest volunteers and invited them onstage.

He then reached into the box and drew a number: 44.

An unlucky number, he thought casually. In Changyuan culture, the number four carried connotations of death.

“Twenty-three!”

“Alright, between 23 and 100.”

“Ninety-seven.”

“Unfortunately, between 23 and 97.”

“Then I’ll guess 68.”

Eventually, after all ten participants had taken a turn, the second guest in the second round guessed the correct number.

“Congratulations! Please give her the money,” Yan Yaonan said.

A staff member approached the woman with a large red envelope—but he did not hand it to her.

The woman seemed to sense something and took a step back. In the next second, the number 44 ball teleported and embedded itself into her eye socket.

She screamed, clutching her eye as she staggered backward.

“This is the winner’s prize. Do you like it?” The staff member removed his sunglasses.

“He’s a wanted criminal! He recently murdered several Affinity Users under the name of the Non-Affinity Group(Anti-Affinity Group)!” someone shouted after recognizing him.

“Frank Williams. How did someone like him sneak into the ball?”

A member of the Haruwa family happened to be near the injured woman and immediately stepped forward to treat her. Yan Yaonan flicked out a stream of fire toward Frank.

But astonishingly, when the flames struck Frank’s body, they vanished.

At the same time, a burst of fire suddenly shot up from another part of the ballroom floor, igniting the carpet.

There were many Affinity Users present. One with an Ocean Affinity immediately extinguished the flames with water.

Meanwhile, on the second floor, a man swiftly conjured a sniper rifle. His red eyes narrowed as he aimed at Frank’s heart.

“Someone’s blocking him. Doesn’t matter. My bullets don’t only travel in straight lines.”

Bang! A shot rang out, the bullet flying toward Frank. Yet when it touched him, it too disappeared.

“My leg! What’s going on?” a man cried as his calf was suddenly struck by a bullet.

“Did I miss? No… I could see the bullet’s trajectory. It was correct.” The sniper froze, not daring to fire a second shot.

Taking everything in—the ball teleporting into the woman’s eye, the vanished flames and bullets—Yan Yaonan reached a conclusion.

“Wait!” he shouted.

“Your abilities won’t strike him. They’ll be redirected elsewhere and may cause friendly fire!”

Yan Yaonan stepped in front of Frank. “According to police intelligence, you have a Space Affinity. Your ability is teleportation—you can teleport non-living objects within a certain range to any location you choose. And you’ve covered your entire body with teleportation fields.”

Otherwise, there would be no way to explain how even bullets fired from behind him could be redirected. He couldn’t possibly react that fast.

Frank looked at Yan Yaonan and smiled faintly. “That’s right. You guessed correctly. So I suggest none of you make any rash moves.”

Those preparing to attack immediately halted.

For a moment, in a ballroom filled with powerful Affinity Users, not a single person dared to strike Frank.

Some were not afraid—but observing. The heads of the Three Great Families were present. At minimum, there were three demigods in this hall.

Yan Yuhuai scanned the surroundings. The Non-Affinity Group certainly hadn’t sent only Frank.

Then—boom! A dessert table suddenly exploded.

“There are many bombs planted here. I’ll detonate them whenever I feel like it, so be careful,” Frank said cheerfully. Then his expression darkened slightly.

Near the explosion, layers of dark-gold shields protected the guests. No one was injured.

Terra Affinity Users excelled at defense. Members of the Hayes family had reacted swiftly.

“We are only responsible for protection. The rest is for the Yan family to answer for,” Anastasia said, looking at Yan Yaonan.

The Yan family wouldn’t decline to the point of failing to handle such a minor issue… right?

Boom! Boom! Two more explosions erupted in distant parts of the ballroom. Because they were far apart, the Hayes members couldn’t shield everyone this time.

Fortunately, members of the Haruwa family stepped in to heal the wounded.

“The Yan family has made quite a blunder,” Hima remarked while treating an injured guest.

“I hope Kagumo is alright.” Reon searched the crowd and suddenly saw a towering figure over 2.5 meters tall charging forward, hurling tables like toys.

Body enhancement—an ability under the Chaos Affinity. In legend, before becoming a god, the Chaos deity Tiammat could transform into a giant over one hundred meters tall, see for kilometers, and withstand ordinary gunpowder without harm.

“There’s more than one enemy Affinity User,” Reon said, taking a combat stance. The ballroom had descended into chaos. Non-combatants fled in panic. Bombs detonated unpredictably. The Yan family, famed for combat prowess, engaged the enemies—but with so many civilians present, they were constrained to avoid collateral damage.

“We can’t suppress them with full firepower. How irritating,” Yan Yining muttered while controlling flames to strike the enemy.

Yan Yuhuai swung a slender sword condensed from fire. “The strong do not complain about their environment.”

There weren’t many enemy Affinity Users, nor were they particularly powerful. But protecting the crowd dragged out the fight.

Looking around, the number of casualties was low, and most were quickly treated by Life Affinity Users.

The real problem was still Frank. Not only could he not be attacked effectively, he was also teleporting objects everywhere—large items like tables appeared in midair to smash into people, while smaller objects attempted to embed themselves into bodies. Constant movement was required to avoid them.

“There must be a flaw in his teleportation field. Otherwise, how does air get in?” Mo Ying said. She and Wei Zhiheng stood in a corner, occasionally shielding nearby guests from stray attacks.

“Not necessarily. He can choose which substances bypass the teleportation,” Wei Zhiheng replied.

“But that explanation sounds convincing, doesn’t it?” Mo Ying looked at him.

Wei Zhiheng understood what she wanted—but not why.

“There are plenty of people here who could handle Frank alone. Why me?”

“Because it’s the most efficient,” Mo Ying said.

“Not just that. You also want to give credit to that sniper. What, I thought you hated the entire Yan family?” Wei Zhiheng saw through her hidden motive.

“There are actually two snipers. And I hate only part of the Yan family. I won’t elevate the actions of some individuals to condemn the whole group,” Mo Ying said calmly.

“Oh? Didn’t expect you to be so kind.”

From the corner of his eye, Wei Zhiheng saw Sibelyna nod at him. She understood Mo Ying’s plan.

Tch. Fine. Mo Ying had helped him before.

Wei Zhiheng touched the mask on his face, stepped forward, and called out, “Everyone, there must be a flaw in Frank’s defense. Otherwise, how does air get through? He would suffocate.”

If one thought carefully, the statement didn’t entirely make sense—but in this chaos, who had time to think deeply?

All eyes fixed on Frank, as if they could spot the weakness by staring.

Frank blinked. A flaw? Since when? If there was any weakness, it was only that he couldn’t maintain it forever—but over half an hour was more than enough.

“Just now, he subconsciously glanced at his right thigh. The flaw must be there!”

Frank’s eyes had indeed flickered downward briefly. Many had seen it.

Is this guy so terrified he’s spouting nonsense? Frank almost laughed.

Bang! A blossom of blood erupted from his thigh. He staggered, his leg buckling as he fell to one knee.

What’s happening? Do I really have a flaw? The searing pain disrupted his thoughts. For a split second, the teleportation field around his body faltered.

Bang! Another shot rang out from a different direction. The bullet pierced straight through his forehead.

“Nice coordination, sis!” the man on the second floor exclaimed excitedly.

Elsewhere on the second floor, a woman flicked her hand casually, and the sniper rifle vanished.

“Not bad. Quick reaction, Youan.”

In an era where the gods have vanished, Affinity Users have become the rulers of the world.

Mo Ying, a descendant of the gods, lost everything four years ago in an explosion and a web of conspiracies.

Four years later, she returns to her hometown to take part in a grand event attended by all major factions.

Yet beneath the celebration lies a crisis that threatens everyone’s lives—one that is also tied to the incident from four years ago.

“Perfect. I’ll take care of revenge and resolve the crisis at the same time.” Mo Ying, now far stronger than before, remains utterly unshaken.

At the same time, her ex-boyfriend—the one who once pushed her into the abyss—asks timidly, “Are you going to kill me?”

Having just dealt with several of her enemies, Mo Ying smiles.

“That depends on my mood.”
