Chapter 5: Control Wearing a Smile

Chapter 5: Control Wearing a Smile

Mar 08, 2026

Lucien’s head tilted slightly toward Kai. The movement was neat and unhurried, practiced enough that even the smallest gesture appeared effortless. For a moment, it almost looked casual.

Almost.

He spoke easily from his seat beside Finn.

“Altairis, why don’t I show you around the academy?” Lucien said, his voice easy, courteous. “It’s tradition for the Prefect-General to guide transfer students.”

Polite. Reasonable.

Perfect.

His gaze shifted then, settling on Finn. The smile remained the same—gentle, reassuring—but something in his eyes cooled by a fraction. The change was so slight it could pass unnoticed.

Unless someone was watching closely.

“Finn, you don’t mind, do you?”

Kai watched.

…There it is again.

The shift in tone. The directing of the gaze.

He phrases it politely, but the structure is wrong for a question.

That’s not “Do you mind?”

That’s “Stay where I put you.”

Wrapped in courtesy so no one calls it what it is.

Finn’s head dipped almost immediately as he leaned over the desk.

“N-no, of course not…”

The answer arrived too quickly.

Then he looked up again with a small, careful smile—the kind he always seemed to save for Lucien.

“You should go ahead.”

Kai’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Immediate compliance. No pause. No confusion.

That isn’t courtesy, it’s conditioning.

He follows Lucien without thinking.

And Lucien…?

Lucien’s used to people doing exactly that.

Kai looked at the two of them.

Understanding settled slowly, like another piece of a puzzle sliding into place.

A faint smirk touched the corner of his mouth — something between amusement and quiet pity.

Kai narrowed his eyes, the corner of his lips lifting slightly.

All it takes is a glance from him.

Everyone else calls it kindness.

His gaze lingered on Lucien’s perfectly measured smile.

But what I see… is control wearing a smile.

* * *

The Edelmont hallway was quieter in the late afternoon.

Dim sunlight filtered through the tall windows, stretching pale gold across the marble floor. Dust drifted slowly through the fading light, softening the long corridor into something almost tranquil.

Lucien walked ahead.

His posture remained as composed as ever—each step measured, each movement controlled with the quiet precision of someone long accustomed to being watched.

Kai followed a short distance behind.

To anyone passing by, he looked relaxed, almost idle. But his gaze moved constantly, taking in the high arches, the polished stone, the subtle way students stepping through the corridor instinctively gave Lucien space.

They passed beneath one of the tall windows.

For a brief moment, the late sunlight caught in Kai’s copper hair, turning the strands faintly gold before he stepped out of the light again.

Ahead of him, Lucien continued through the dimmer stretch of the hallway. The dark of his hair seemed to absorb the fading glow as if the shadows belonged to him.

“It must’ve been a challenge, transferring here in your second year, Altairis,” Lucien said calmly.

His voice carried the same gentle composure he had used in the classroom.

“Most of the students here come from old noble circles. They’ve grown up attending the same gatherings and academies.”

They turned a corner.

“If anything troubles you, come to me.”

Kai inclined his head politely.

“Thanks… Lord Corvinus. I’ll keep that in mind.”

His eyes slid briefly toward Lucien, expression unreadable.

He moves with that polished calm…

the kind that keeps people exactly where he wants them.

Lucien’s pace never faltered.

But calm like that only exists when something underneath is cracking.

Kai’s gaze followed the steady line of Lucien’s back.

You just have to press the right seam.

A faint smile touched the corner of his mouth.

…And I only need one.

* * *

The main lecture hall for Aristocratic Studies stood empty.

Rows of polished desks stretched across the quiet room, untouched. Late afternoon sunlight slanted through the tall windows, laying long bands of gold across the wooden floor.

Lucien walked ahead, continuing the tour as if nothing unusual had happened earlier.

“And this is the main lecture hall for Aristocratic Studies.”

His voice carried easily in the hollow quiet.

“It’s usually quiet in the afternoons when everyone’s busy with clubs.”

He stopped, then turned to face Kai.

The slanted light from the tall windows no longer reached him, leaving his face partly in shadow. Only his eyes remained visible.

For a brief moment, the red of them caught the dim light—sharp, faintly luminous against the darkness.

Lucien smiled.

“You shouldn’t get too close to Finnian Doyle.”

His tone remained gentle—almost kind. Yet in the quiet lecture hall, the words carried a different weight.

Not advice. A boundary.

“He’s already struggling for acceptance here.”

Lucien’s posture remained composed, his hands loosely behind his back as if the conversation were nothing more than casual advice.

“In an academy full of pure-blood nobles… someone like him stands out.”

A small pause followed.

His smile shifted slightly, though the politeness never quite left it.

“You of all people should understand, Altairis.”

His gaze rested on Kai for a brief moment before he continued.

“Some bloodlines are… harder to fit in.”

Kai watched him.

Then a faint, mocking smile touched his lips.

“…That ‘gentle protector’ act again? Please.”

His voice carried a teasing edge, light but deliberate.

“If you want him, why don’t you just say it?”

Kai tilted his head slightly.

“Go on.”

The empty lecture hall seemed to hold the silence between them.

“It's easy, isn't it?”

Lucien fell silent.

He didn’t explode in anger. Instead, he went perfectly still, the kind of stillness that felt deliberate rather than natural.

The late afternoon light fell across his face, making his smile appear almost too precise.

“I’m afraid I don’t follow your meaning, Altairis,” Lucien said softly. “And I would appreciate it if you refrained from making assumptions about matters that do not concern you.”

Kai leaned forward slightly, tilting his head as though examining something newly interesting—like a stray cat that had just found a gap in a wall.

There it is.

That stillness.

Kai watched Lucien’s expression without blinking.

The moment he feels someone slipping past the edges of his order… he freezes.

He isn’t calm. He’s bracing.

Lucien Corvinus, the Prefect General, rules the elite noble academy with discipline, authority, and a flawless smile.

Kai transfers in knowing exactly who Lucien is—and exactly how dangerous he can be.
He doesn’t keep his head down. He doesn’t follow the rules.
A mocking kiss is enough to expose what Lucien hides behind that perfect smile.

At an academy built on hierarchy, defiance is an invitation to be crushed… or claimed.
