Episode 16 “THE SHADOW AND THE LOSS”

Episode 16 “THE SHADOW AND THE LOSS”

Mar 10, 2026

The forest was bright and vibrant with life. Aria ran between the trees with her sisters, while small spheres of white light floated like fireflies. The scent of wildflowers filled the air, and every rustle among the leaves sounded like a friendly whisper. Aria could feel the heartbeat of the forest beneath her feet; every root and stone vibrated as if greeting her. Sunlight filtered through the branches, painting golden patterns across her face. Her older sister sang an ancient melody, a chant that resonated in the air like a prayer. Aria tried to imitate the notes, her voice trembling but full of wonder. Each word seemed to weave an invisible thread between their souls, and for a moment the entire world felt suspended, far away from danger. Then the wind changed suddenly. An unnatural, cold gust sliced through the forest. The air grew thick and sticky, as if breathing had become a burden. Aria felt a chill run down her spine, and a sharp smell—like wet ashes—filled her nose. Leaves fell like dead rain, and every familiar sound of the forest vanished, replaced by a silence that screamed with fear. Shadows fell from above like black rain, devouring the light. The sisters tried to raise a barrier of white light. For a moment, it worked. Her older sister’s eyes widened in terror. Then the light collapsed like shattered glass—and the girls vanished. Aria remained alone among the burned trees. The ground beneath her was cold and rough, and each step lifted clouds of gray dust. Her hands trembled, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. Every shadow seemed to move with its own intention, and her voice dared not escape, swallowed by fear. A dark whisper spoke her name, not a sound, but a living darkness pulsing like a sick heart. Aria woke with a gasp, drenched in sweat, her heart racing. April stepped into the tent, her hair messy from the morning wind.

“Aria? Are you okay?” she asked.

“Just memories that refuse to sleep,” Aria replied, brushing a hand over her face.

April noticed the tension in Aria’s muscles, the curve of her shoulders speaking of an invisible weight.

“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked softly, as if afraid even words could shatter a painful memory.

A subtle tremor crossed Aria’s hand. April watched closely, suspicious. She placed her fingers on Aria’s wrist, and a blue impulse flashed between them. For a moment, April saw something: a burned forest, broken screams. She pulled her hand away, shaken.

“You saw something, didn’t you?” Aria asked.

“Just a fragment. But it was terrible,” April answered.

Aria closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

“Next time… ask me first. Some things still hurt.”

April stepped closer.
“If you want, you can talk about—”

“No… but thank you,” Aria said.

A gentle smile appeared on April’s face, and Aria seemed slightly calmer. Later, sitting near the river, April stared at her reflection.

"I’ve never been enough, she thought."

From the reflection, a blue light emerged, watching her.

“Now you are something you should not yet be,” whispered a blue voice.

April recognized that presence without knowing how. It was not the Superior. It was the same force that flowed through the Azure Thread—older, greater. It did not speak to command, but to remind. Nearby, Star prepared glowing runes, her hands trembling.

“You’re not the only one who feels it,” she murmured.

Aria clenched her jaw, aware of Star’s presence. That night, when darkness deepened, Aria was dragged again into the same traumatic memory, screaming among living shadows. April ran to her and grabbed her hands.

“Hey. Hey. I’m here!” she said.

Aria leaned against April’s shoulder.

“I’ve already lost too much,” Aria whispered.

Her fingers clutched the fabric of April’s tunic as if even the present might slip away.

“I am not a loss,” April assured her.

Star watched silently from the tent entrance, fists clenched. At dusk, a light wind crossed the camp. Korvath was the first to turn, his pupils narrowing. Between the trees, a thin shadow slithered—formless, faceless, yet filled with intention.

“Show yourself,” Korvath ordered.

The Shadow withdrew into the vegetation, leaving behind the smell of burning.

“There’s something here… something that wants Aria… or April,” Star whispered.

Korvath tightened his wings.

“It wants April. Aria is only an open wound. And wounds attract predators.”

Like every predator, it did not chase what ran. It waited for what hesitated. Far away, in a structure of black glass and suspended light, streams of energy flowed like veins across the floor. The Superior observed a map of pulsing blue circles—one flickering brighter than the others.

“I heard you,” he whispered.

A Dark Form rose from the floor like liquid smoke.

“It’s unstable. But protected.”

The Superior smiled faintly.

“Even better. What vibrates… eventually breaks.”

And so, the hunt began. Later, April found Star by the river.

“I came to spend some time with you,” April said.

“Why?” Star asked.

“Because I wanted to be close to you.”

Star’s hands trembled nervously.

“When I’m with you… I feel alive. And that scares me… but it feels good.”

Star realized that what made her feel alive could also destroy her.

“It’s strange to feel like this,” she said quietly. “Sometimes I feel too fragile… other times too bold. And you… make me feel both at once.”

“And… yes,” April confessed softly. “I like you.”

Star hesitated.

“But I’m not the only one who looks at you like that.”

She clenched her jaw.

“And I don’t know if I’m ready to share what I’m most afraid to lose.”

Later, Korvath guided them to the stone circle. Aria on one side. Star on the other. April in the center.

“Hold hands. Show me what you feel. Without speaking.”

Lights appeared in their palms—white, gold, and blue. When the lights touched, they formed a pillar of energy that spiraled upward. The air vibrated, their breaths synchronizing with the spiral. The earth trembled. Leaves rose. The river slowed.

“Now it’s clear,” Korvath said.

April collapsed to her knees, breathless. Star helped her up, while Aria placed a hand on her heart.

“Don’t force your light. It will follow you on its own.”

Later that night, April sat by the river again. The moon reflected in the water—and a blue glow rose from the reflection.

“Don’t run. I knew you before you even learned to breathe,” a mysterious voice said.

“Who are you?” April asked.

“I am what the Shadow cannot touch.”

A blue hand emerged from the water toward her.

“I know Aria. I know Star. I know your divided heart.”

The hand grabbed her ankle. April woke suddenly, trembling.

“Something… is looking for me,” she whispered.

The Azure Thread in her chest pulsed painfully, leaving a hollow sensation, as if something had tried to tear away part of her soul. Aria took her hand, and Star wrapped her arms around her.

“We’ll protect you.”

Later, inside the tent, the three lay together, fingers intertwined. The connection between their hearts was warm and healing. But beneath the quiet, something remained tense, like a string pulled too tight, not yet decided whether to snap. Outside, Korvath felt the new energy.

“Finally… something in her has stopped running.”

But far away, the Shadow watched in silence. For now, none of them sensed it. Yet for the first time, the river no longer reflected the stars.
