Chapter 2 – The Man Behind the Contract

Chapter 2 – The Man Behind the Contract

Mar 16, 2026

“You’re late.”
Ridhi froze.
No one had told her a time.
So how was she already wrong?

Morning didn’t feel like a beginning.
It felt like something had already been signed… without her.
Ridhi Kapoor stood in front of the building.
Not tall.
Not impressive.
Dominating.
Her fingers tightened around the file in her hand.
Inside it—
Her future.
A contract marriage.
At the top of the glass tower, cold silver letters reflected the sun—
Malhotra Global Trades.
The kind of name people didn’t question.
The kind that didn’t rise to power—
It owned it.
And today—
She was walking into it.
The moment she stepped inside—
Something shifted.
The air.
The silence.
The control.
Everything was perfect.
Too perfect.
Floors that reflected like mirrors.
People who didn’t speak unless necessary.
Movements… precise.
Disciplined.
Careful.
Like mistakes weren’t allowed here.
Ridhi sat in the waiting area.
Back straight.
Breathing controlled.
But her heartbeat—
Slightly off.
She had seen this before.
Nervous candidates.
Shaky hands.
Eyes avoiding contact.
She had judged them.
Measured them.
Decided their worth.
But today—
The roles had changed.
And she felt it.
Before anyone said a word.
“Miss Ridhi Kapoor.”
She stood instantly.
Too fast.
Almost like she was trying not to hesitate.
“This way.”
The assistant didn’t smile.
Didn’t look at her twice.
Just walked.
Ridhi followed.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Each sound echoed just enough to remind her—
You can still turn back.
She didn’t.
The door was taller than it needed to be.
A knock.
A pause.
“Come in.”
The room was wide.
Open.
Powerful.
Sunlight filled it—
But the air felt cold.
Controlled.
Calculated.
And then—
She saw him.
Arjun Malhotra.
He didn’t stand.
Didn’t greet her.
Didn’t pretend.
He just sat there—
Like a man who didn’t need movement to prove authority.
Late twenties.
Sharp jaw.
Dark eyes.
Calm face.
Unreadable.
But it wasn’t his looks that made Ridhi still.
It was the way he looked at her.
Not curious.
Not interested.
Not even judgmental.
Certain.
Like he already knew the answer she hadn’t given yet.
“Sit.”
One word.
No tone.
No effort.
But it landed like a command.
Ridhi sat.
Silence followed.
Not awkward.
Not accidental.
Intentional.
He let it stretch.
Watched her adjust.
Watched her breathe.
Watched her exist in his space.
And somehow—
That felt like evaluation.
Then—
He pushed a file toward her.
The same one.
The contract.
Already opened.
Already marked.
Already decided.
“A two-year agreement.”
His voice was steady.
Controlled.
Like every word had been used before.
“No emotional expectations.”
A pause.
“No interference in my work.”
His eyes lifted.
Locked into hers.
“And complete confidentiality.”
Ridhi didn’t move.
But her fingers—
Tightened slightly.
Two years.
No emotions.
No interference.
This wasn’t a marriage.
This was a structure.
A system.
A deal.
“If you can’t handle that…”
He leaned back slightly.
“…you should leave now.”
No pressure.
No persuasion.
No convincing.
Just—
Exit.
Like she didn’t matter enough to be convinced.
But she did.
She knew she did.
Because for the first time—
He was watching her.
Closely.
Carefully.
Not for her answer—
For her reaction.
Her gaze dropped.
Words blurred.
For a second—
Nothing made sense.
And then—
Clink.
Clink.
Clink.
Her mother.
Standing in the kitchen.
Counting coins.
Again.
And again.
As if repeating it would change something.
It didn’t.
Ridhi inhaled.
Slow.
Controlled.
Her heart said no.
Her mind said wait.
But reality—
Reality didn’t ask.
She looked up.
Straight at him.
Arjun Malhotra.
A man who didn’t hesitate.
Didn’t soften.
Didn’t explain.
A man who treated marriage—
Like something already finalized.
And then—
Something shifted.
Not in him.
In her.
“You don’t ask questions?” she said quietly.
It wasn’t defiance.
It wasn’t fear.
It was… something in between.
For the first time—
His expression changed.
Slightly.
Barely.
But enough.
“I ask the ones that matter.”
A pause.
Then—
“You already answered mine.”
Ridhi stilled.
Her breath caught—
Just slightly.
Because she hadn’t said yes yet.

“You don’t scare me…” she said, her voice softer than she intended.
A beat.
“…but you should.”
Silence.
But this time—
It wasn’t his.
It was hers.

He leaned forward slightly.
Not closer.
Not aggressive.
Just enough.
“Sign it, Ridhi.”
A pause.
His eyes didn’t leave hers.
“Or walk out…”
Another pause.
Softer.
More dangerous.
“…and see how much your ‘no’ actually costs.”

Would you sign it…
Or take the risk of finding out what happens if you refuse?

Because walking away sounds easy—
Until you realize…
This isn’t the kind of place you walk out of unchanged.
And signing?
It doesn’t mean you agreed.
It means you just stepped into something…
That was already waiting for you.
Because here’s what no one told Ridhi—
This contract doesn’t start when she signs it.
It started…
The moment she walked in.
And Arjun Malhotra?
He’s not waiting for her decision.
He’s waiting for her to understand—
Why she was the only option.
