Chapter 3 – The signature trap

Chapter 3 – The signature trap

Mar 16, 2026

“Once you sign… you don’t get to change your mind.”
Ridhi’s fingers froze.
No one had said that out loud.
So why did it feel true?

The pen shouldn’t have felt this heavy.
But it did.
Because this wasn’t ink.
It was control.
And it wasn’t just a signature—
It was her life… being handed over without negotiation.
The silence inside the office pressed against her.
Thick.
Unforgiving.
The contract lay between them like something alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
Two years.
No emotions.
No interference.
No questions.
No love.
Just a marriage that didn’t need to feel real—
Only look real.
Ridhi stared at the paper.
The words blurred.
But the meaning didn’t.
And then—
Clink.
Clink.
Clink.
Her mother.
Counting coins.
Again.
And again.
Hoping repetition could change reality.
It never did.
Her father.
Smiling.
Always smiling.
Like exhaustion was just another habit.
Like worry could be hidden if you tried hard enough.
They never asked her for help.
Not once.
And somehow—
That hurt more than if they had.
Ridhi swallowed.
This wasn’t a decision anymore.
It was a trade.
She looked up.
Arjun Malhotra hadn’t moved.
Not an inch.
Still.
Calm.
Unreadable.
He wasn’t convincing her.
Wasn’t rushing her.
Wasn’t even… interested in her answer.
And that—
That felt wrong.
“If I sign this…” her voice came out quieter than she expected.
“…what happens after two years?”
For the first time—
He leaned back.
Slightly.
Controlled.
“We separate.”
Two words.
No hesitation.
No emotion.
No doubt.
Ridhi nodded slowly.
But something inside her tightened.
Because a marriage with an ending already decided—
Wasn’t a relationship.
It was an arrangement designed to expire.
Without another word—
He slid the pen toward her.
“You should decide now.”
A pause.
His eyes held hers.
Not forcing.
Not softening.
“I don’t like wasting time.”
No anger.
No pressure.
Just authority.
Ridhi picked up the pen.
Her fingers trembled.
Just a little.
Enough for her to notice.
Enough for him to see.
For a second—
She imagined telling her parents.
Their refusal.
Their fear.
Their love.
“You deserve better.”
Maybe she did.
But they deserved peace.
Her grip tightened.
Her breath steadied.
And then—
She signed.
Ridhi Kapoor.
Her name looked… different.
Heavier.
Like it didn’t belong to her anymore.
She pushed the contract forward.
Arjun’s gaze dropped.
Focused.
Sharp.
And for one second—
Something shifted.
A flicker.
Gone before it could be understood.
Then he signed.
Arjun Malhotra.
Just like that—
It was done.
But the moment didn’t settle.
It cracked.
The door opened.
No knock.
No permission.
A woman walked in.
Like she didn’t enter spaces—
She owned them.
Elegant.
Sharp.
Composed.
Dangerous.
She stopped when she saw Ridhi.
Her eyes moved.
To the contract.
To the signatures.
Back to Ridhi.
A slow smile formed.
Cold.
Measured.
“Arjun,” she said softly,
“you didn’t tell me we had a guest.”
Ridhi felt it immediately.
The shift.
The tension.
Something unspoken… tightening in the room.
The woman walked closer.
Too close.
Her hand rested lightly on the desk beside Arjun—
Not asking.
Claiming.
“And who is she?”
The assistant hesitated.
Then—
“Miss Ridhi Kapoor. The contract bride.”
Silence.
Then—
A quiet laugh.
“So she actually agreed?”
Her eyes returned to Ridhi.
Slow.
Observing.
Uncomfortable.
“Interesting.”
A chill ran down Ridhi’s spine.
The woman stepped closer.
Close enough for her voice to lower.
Close enough for it to feel personal.
“You should be careful, Miss Kapoor.”
A pause.
Colder now.
“Not every story with Arjun Malhotra…”
She leaned in slightly.
“…ends with you walking away.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Pressing.
Ridhi looked at Arjun.
Waiting.
Expecting.
Something.
He didn’t react.
Didn’t interrupt.
Didn’t deny.
Nothing.
“Ridhi, you can leave now.”
His voice was calm.
Controlled.
Untouched.
He closed the contract file.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
“Prepare yourself for the wedding.”
That was it.
Ridhi stood.
Her thoughts scattered.
Unstable.
Uncertain.
As she walked toward the door—
Those words followed her.
Not every story ends happily.
Her hand paused on the handle.
Then—
She turned.
Just once.
And looked at him.
Really looked.
Arjun Malhotra didn’t look like a man who feared losing people.
He looked like someone—
Who never planned to keep them.

The contract was signed.
The decision was made.
There was no going back.
But one thought refused to stay quiet—
What if this wasn’t a marriage he planned to end…
But one he had already decided how to control?

Did Ridhi just save her family…
or step into something she’ll never be allowed to leave?

Or worse—
What if she didn’t choose this at all…
What if she was chosen?
Because saving her family sounds noble—
Until you realize…
People like Arjun Malhotra don’t fix problems.
They use them.
And Ridhi?
She didn’t just sign a contract.
She gave someone permission—
To decide how her life will go from here.
Because the most dangerous part isn’t the marriage.
It’s this—
He never once asked her why she agreed.
As if…
He already knew.
