Chapter 4 – The wrong beginning

Chapter 4 – The wrong beginning

Mar 16, 2026

“She shouldn’t have signed it.”
The thought came out of nowhere.
Ridhi hadn’t even moved—
But something already felt irreversible.

Something about today felt wrong.
Not loud.
Not obvious.
But wrong enough—
That it refused to leave.
Ridhi lay still on her bed.
Eyes fixed on the ceiling.
Unblinking.
The room was quiet.
Her mind wasn’t.
The contract.
The signature.
Arjun Malhotra.
And then—
Her.
Ridhi’s fingers tightened slowly against the bedsheet.
The memory came back.
Clear.
Uncomfortable.
The way she walked in.
Like she belonged.
Like no one in that room could question her.
The way she stood near Arjun.
Too close.
Too natural.
Too… familiar.
Ridhi’s chest tightened.
Who was she?
And more importantly—
Why didn’t Arjun stop her?
Not once.
Not even a second.
Ridhi turned to her side.
Eyes shutting tight.
But it didn’t help.
Because now—
It was his face.
Calm.
Cold.
Unmoved.
The man who had just become her husband—
Didn’t look like one.
Didn’t act like one.
Didn’t feel like one.
And somehow—
That hurt more than it should have.
“This isn’t how it’s supposed to feel…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Even if it was fake.
Even if it was just a deal—
There should have been something.
A reaction.
A pause.
A moment.
But Arjun Malhotra gave her none.
Ridhi exhaled slowly.
Face pressing into the pillow.
Two years.
A marriage with rules.
A relationship without emotion.
An ending already decided.
A deal.
Then why—
Why did it feel like she had lost control?
Silence answered.
Her thoughts shifted.
The wedding.
The word alone made her stomach tighten.
Weddings were supposed to feel alive.
Loud.
Real.
Hers—
Would be quiet.
Controlled.
Calculated.
Fake.
And then—
The thought she had been avoiding.
Her parents.
Ridhi’s eyes opened slowly.
How do you tell them?
How do you sit in front of people who gave you everything—
And tell them you gave yourself away?
“They won’t understand…”
Because they believed in simple things.
Love.
Trust.
Respect.
Not contracts.
Not conditions.
Not men like him.
Her chest tightened again.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
She had already signed.
That was enough.
A second passed.
Then another.
Sleep didn’t come.
Because one question stayed.
What kind of man was Arjun Malhotra?

Far away—
In a world Ridhi had never seen—
Arjun Malhotra was not who she thought.
Years ago—
Before the power.
Before the name—
There was silence.
Cold walls.
Iron bars.
A place where people learned one thing—
Trust gets you hurt.
And inside it—
A boy who never reacted.
Arjun.
He didn’t speak.
Didn’t fight.
Didn’t belong.
But he stayed.
Watching.
Learning.
Waiting.
Until—
There was one exception.
Harshit.
Same silence.
Same stillness.
Same kind of darkness—
That didn’t need explanation.
Their first conversation meant nothing.
Short.
Careful.
Forgettable.
But it stayed.
Not friendship.
Not trust.
Understanding.
The kind that doesn’t need words.
And when they left—
They didn’t leave as boys.
They left as something else.

“The world doesn’t break people like us…”
A pause.
“…it turns us into something worse.”

Elsewhere—
Luxury replaced silence.
But danger remained.
Simran Kaur Malhotra stood by the window.
Still.
Elegant.
Controlled.
The glass in her hand remained untouched.
Behind her—
A man waited.
Silent.
Loyal.
“So…”
She spoke without turning.
“He signed it.”
No surprise.
No reaction.
Just—
Disappointment.
“A contract marriage…”
A pause.
“Foolish boy.”
Her grip tightened slightly.
Years.
That’s how long she had stayed away.
And still—
This was enough to bring her back.
Because in their world—
Mistakes don’t exist.
Only consequences.
And Arjun—
Had just created one.

Ridhi sat up.
Suddenly.
Sleep was gone.
The silence felt heavier now.
Like it was hiding something.
She wrapped her arms around herself.
Arjun Malhotra.
A man who didn’t explain.
Didn’t react.
Didn’t feel—
At least not in ways she understood.
A man surrounded by people who didn’t seem normal.
Didn’t feel safe.
And somehow—
She belonged there now.
That thought settled.
Deep.
Uncomfortable.
And then—
It hit her.
Slow.
Sharp.
She didn’t just marry a man.
She stepped into his world.
And that world—
Wasn’t meant for someone like her.

Her breath slowed.
But her heart didn’t.
Because one truth refused to stay quiet—
Some doors don’t trap you when you enter…
They wait—
Until you try to leave.

Do you think Arjun became dangerous…
or was he always like this?

Because here’s the part no one agrees on—
People like Arjun aren’t created overnight.
Some say the world broke him.
Some say…
He was always waiting for a reason to become this.
And Ridhi?
She just walked into the middle of that answer.
So tell me—
If a man doesn’t show emotion… doesn’t explain… doesn’t hesitate—
Is he protecting himself?
Or hiding something dangerous?
And be honest—
Would you try to understand him…
Or start planning your escape?
