Chapter 5 - Signed in Silence

Chapter 5 - Signed in Silence

Mar 18, 2026

“This isn’t a wedding.”
Ridhi didn’t say it out loud.
But standing there—
She felt it.

There was no music.
No laughter.
No warmth.
Only silence.
At a wedding that didn’t feel like one.
Ridhi Kapoor stood at the entrance.
Dressed like a bride.
Feeling nothing like one.
The white gown flowed softly around her.
Perfect.
Pure.
Unreal.
Like a lie she had agreed to wear.
“Some weddings begin with love…”
The thought came quietly.
“Yours begins with a signature.”
Her fingers tightened slightly around the fabric.
Her eyes scanned the room.
Empty.
Too empty.
No relatives.
No whispers.
No chaos.
Just a hall prepared—
Not for celebration.
But completion.
A few steps away—
Mr. and Mrs. Oberoi stood.
Still.
Watching.
Not parents.
Not family.
Just witnesses.
Ridhi forced a small smile.
They returned it.
Too easily.
No questions.
No hesitation.
As if her life—
Was already decided.
The door opened.
Everything shifted.
Arjun Malhotra walked in.
The room didn’t welcome him.
It adjusted.
Black suit.
Measured steps.
Unshakable presence.
Power.
Not loud.
Not aggressive.
Certain.
Behind him—
His assistant.
A lawyer.
And her.
Nandita.
Ridhi felt it instantly.
That same cold energy.
That same knowing look.
Nandita’s lips curved slightly.
Not a smile.
A message.
“I understand this story better than you do.”
Ridhi looked away.
Her focus shifted.
To him.
Arjun stopped in front of her.
And then—
He looked at her.
Not briefly.
Not casually.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
The gown.
Her posture.
Her eyes.
No emotion.
But attention.
Sharp.
Focused.
Unavoidable.
Ridhi felt it.
That strange awareness.
Why was he looking at her like that?
Not admiration.
Not curiosity.
Something deeper.
Something… unsettling.
And then—
He walked past her.
Just like that.
The moment broke.
“If everyone is ready…”
The lawyer stepped forward.
“…we can proceed.”
No one objected.
Of course not.
Arjun picked up the pen.
No pause.
No hesitation.
He signed.
Arjun Malhotra.
Clean.
Firm.
Final.
Like this was never a question.
The paper turned toward her.
Ridhi stepped forward.
Her heart didn’t race.
It tightened.
Her fingers closed around the pen.
For a moment—
She looked at him.
He was already watching.
Still.
Silent.
Waiting.
Not for her emotions.
For her decision.
Her breath slowed.
And then—
She signed.
Ridhi Kapoor.
That was enough.
The lawyer closed the file.
“All formalities are complete.”
Formalities.
The word landed heavier than vows.
Because that’s all this was.
Across from her—
Arjun didn’t move.
But his gaze stayed.
Unbroken.
Ridhi noticed.
And for the first time—
It made her uneasy.
She adjusted her sleeve.
A small movement.
His eyes followed.
Every detail.
Every shift.
“Why does it feel like…”
Her thought paused.
“…he’s not just looking at me?”
“…he’s reading me?”
“Well… that was quick.”
Nandita stepped forward.
Slow.
Controlled.
“I’ve seen business meetings with more emotion than this.”
Sharp.
Mocking.
Intentional.
Ridhi didn’t react.
She wouldn’t give her that.
Mr. and Mrs. Oberoi approached.
“You look beautiful.”
Ridhi smiled.
“Thank you.”
It didn’t reach her eyes.
Across the room—
Arjun watched.
Still.
Detached.
But something had shifted.
He had seen many women.
Confident.
Careful.
Controlled.
But this one—
She wasn’t trying.
She wasn’t performing.
She wasn’t asking to be seen.
And yet—
She was impossible to ignore.
That quiet strength—
Stayed.
His gaze returned.
And this time—
It lingered.
Nandita noticed.
Of course she did.
For a second—
Her expression hardened.
Then—
She smiled again.
Controlled.
“Congratulations.”
Ridhi nodded.
“Thank you.”
But the tension didn’t leave.
It changed.
Arjun adjusted his sleeve.
Then—
He walked away.
No words.
No pause.
No looking back.
Like this moment—
Was already finished.
Ridhi watched him go.
Her husband.
A stranger.
A decision she couldn’t undo.
At the door—
He stopped.
Just for a second.
Turned.
Their eyes met.
Again.
And this time—
Something changed.
Not emotion.
Not softness.
Something darker.
Something… deliberate.

“You don’t need to understand this marriage…”
A pause.
“…to survive it.”

Then he left.
The door closed.
Silence returned.
Heavier.
Ridhi looked at her hands.
Ink.
Faint.
Small.
But permanent.
Behind her—
Nandita smiled.
Because she knew something Ridhi didn’t.

This wasn’t the start of her marriage.
It was the start of something else.
And whatever it was—
It had already begun.

Do you think Arjun is watching her…
or preparing her for something?

Because here’s what doesn’t make sense—
He never asked her a single personal question.
Not her past.
Not her family.
Not even why she agreed.
And yet—
He chose her.
Not randomly.
Not urgently.
Carefully.
Like he wasn’t finding a bride…
He was selecting a solution.
So ask yourself—
What kind of man marries a stranger…
Without needing to know anything about her?
And the more disturbing question—
What if he already knows everything?
About her.
About her family.
About the reason she couldn’t say no.
Because if that’s true—
Then this wasn’t a marriage.
It was a plan.
