Chapter 10 - The Eyes That Never Left

Chapter 10 - The Eyes That Never Left

Mar 23, 2026

The moment Ridhi stepped deeper into the party, something felt wrong.
Not obvious. Not loud.
But wrong enough to make her chest tighten.
The air felt heavier. Smiles looked perfect—but empty. Conversations flowed, but every word sounded measured, controlled… fake. It was beautiful on the surface, but underneath, something ugly breathed quietly.
And somehow—
she felt it watching her.
At first, it was just glances.
Quick. Curious.
Then conversations slowed when she passed. Voices dropped. Eyes lingered a second too long.
And without anyone saying it—

Ridhi became the center of attention.
“New face?”
The voice came from behind her.
Smooth. Sharp.
Ridhi turned to find a woman standing there—elegant, confident, and far too aware of everything around her. Her gaze moved over Ridhi slowly, not admiring.
Measuring.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you before,” the woman said, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Which is… interesting.”
Ridhi forced herself to stay calm. “Maybe because I don’t belong here.”
The woman let out a soft chuckle and stepped closer. “Oh, everyone here belongs,” she said quietly. “The real question is—how long.”
The words settled heavily.
Before Ridhi could respond—
“So she’s the new one?”
A man joined them, his tone amused. His eyes scanned her openly, like she was something to be evaluated.
“She looks… delicate,” he added.
A pause.
“Shouldn’t last long.”
Soft laughter followed.
Not loud.
Not direct.
But enough.
Enough for Ridhi to understand.
They weren’t seeing her.
They were placing her.
And wherever she had been placed—
it wasn’t somewhere powerful.
“She reminds me of Nandita.”
The name dropped casually.
But the tone—
wasn’t kind.
“Pretty. Quiet.”
“Easy to manage.”
“Temporary.”
The words overlapped, sharp in their softness.
Ridhi swallowed hard.
Her chest tightened—not with fear, but something worse.
Humiliation.
The kind that didn’t scream.
The kind that whispered.
She wanted to react.
To say something.
But she didn’t.
Because reacting meant proving them right.
Still—
the suffocation didn’t leave.
It grew.

The music blurred. Voices faded. The room felt distant, even though she stood right in the middle of it.
And for the first time
she felt it.
The weight.
Not of the dress.
Not of the people.
But of something much heavier.

Across the room, Arjun Malhotra sat like a man untouched by chaos.
Five men stood behind him, silent and alert, forming an invisible boundary no one dared to cross. One by one, people approached him.
Carefully.
Desperately.
“Sir, if you could just reconsider—”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Flat. Final.
The man stepped back.
Another tried.
“This deal could benefit both—”
“It won’t.”
Again.
No explanation.
No discussion.
Arjun leaned back slightly, relaxed.
But his eyes—
weren’t on them.
They were somewhere else.
Across the room.
On her.

He had seen the moment Ridhi entered.
Seen the way the room reacted.
Seen the way people looked at her.
And more importantly—
he had seen how wrong they were about her.
His jaw tightened slightly.
Another man stepped forward. “Mr. Malhotra—”
“Leave.”
This time, Arjun didn’t even look at him.
The word was quiet.
But dangerous enough.
Something had shifted.

Back in the crowd, Ridhi’s patience was slipping.
“Tell me,” the woman said again, circling her slightly, “who brought you here?”
Ridhi hesitated.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
The woman smiled. “Ah… so even you don’t know.”
A man leaned closer. “Let me guess,” he said mockingly, “someone powerful got bored.”
Laughter.
This time—
it hit harder.
Because now—
it felt real.

Ridhi’s fingers clenched at her side. Her breathing turned uneven. The pressure, the stares, the words—
it was too much.
And just when it felt like she might break—
“Enjoying yourselves?”
The voice wasn’t loud.
But it cut through everything.
Instantly.
Silence fell.
People stopped talking. Moving. Breathing.
They turned.
Arjun Malhotra was walking toward them.
Calm.
Unhurried.
Unavoidable.
The same people who had been so confident seconds ago now stood still, their expressions shifting, their words dying before they could form.
Arjun didn’t look at them first.
He looked at Ridhi.
Only her.
His gaze moved over her slowly, like he was checking something… confirming something.
And for a second—
everything else disappeared.
Then—
without breaking eye contact—
he spoke.
“Let’s go, wifey.”
The words landed softly.
But the impact—
was heavy.
Silence deepened.
Ridhi’s breath caught.
Not because of the word.
But because of the way he said it.
Like it wasn’t fake.
Like it wasn’t a show.
Like it meant something.

Arjun finally looked at the others.
And this time
there was no calm.
Only warning.
“You’ve entertained yourselves enough.”
His voice stayed steady.
But underneath—
there was danger.
No one spoke.
No one dared.
Because now—
they understood.
Too late.
Too clearly.
Arjun stepped beside Ridhi.
Close enough for her to feel it.
The shift.
The protection.
Without asking, he reached for her hand.
And held it.
Firm.
Certain.
Possessive.
“Next time,” he said quietly, eyes still on them, “think before you speak.”
No response.
There couldn’t be one.
“Come,” he said.
Softer.
But just as commanding.
And he pulled her away

.
As they walked away, Ridhi felt it again.
The shift.
But this time
it wasn’t suffocating.
It was confusing.
Because the same man who had just claimed her so effortlessly—
still felt like a stranger.
Or maybe—
he wasn’t.
“You handled it better than I expected,” Arjun said quietly.
Ridhi frowned, looking at him. “Expected?”
A pause.
Then—
“I’ve been watching you for two months, Ridhi.”
Her steps faltered.
Just for a second.
But enough.
“What?” she whispered.
Arjun didn’t stop.
Didn’t hesitate.
“You think tonight was the first time I saw you?”
Her heartbeat picked up.
Fast. Loud.
“Then what was all this?” she asked, her voice tightening.
Arjun finally looked at her.
And this time—
his eyes were different.
Deeper.
Darker.
“Selection.”
One word.
Heavy.
Ridhi’s breath hitched.
Because suddenly—
everything made sense.
And nothing did.
The meeting.
The marriage.
Him.
It wasn’t random.
It wasn’t sudden.
It was planned.
And she—
had never known.
“You weren’t chosen by chance,” Arjun said quietly.
And that’s when it hit her.
The suffocation from before?
It was nothing.
Because this—
this was worse.

Because now the question wasn’t why people were watching her.
The question was—
why had Arjun Malhotra been watching her…
long before she even knew his name?
