Black Roses

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Apr 02, 2026

Satoru put his book bag in his room and got changed out of his school uniform and into something more comfortable; An old band t-shirt Kanato gave him and a pair of shorts.

He wasn’t sure when or if his sister would be coming home, even so he had to make dinner. Satoru wasn’t that great at cooking. He could do the bare minimum, cook a meal that wasn’t burned yet the food never tasted right. Maybe it was because more often than not he ate alone. He missed the mornings he’d spent at Hiroto’s and the nights Kanato would come over to keep him company. Sure, they might hang out often now, but it still doesn’t quite fill the void.

Satoru looked through their all but empty fridge. One of these days he’d have to make a run to the grocery store. Luckily they had enough to make pork cutlet bowls. That was Megumi’s favorite.

While he cooked he had the TV turned on to one of the channels that played music. It gave him at least something to listen to and it killed a bit of the deafening silence.

When he was almost done, he heard his phone go off. He assumed it was the message from Kanato.

“Okay guys, this Sunday we’ll meet at the train station closest to you two at nine. From there we’ll head closer to the city to find jobs. Objections?” Kanato’s message read.

Hiroto was the first to reply, “that works for me! I’m so excited!!!”

Satoru replied with a simple, “cool. I’ll be there.”

Satoru went to his calendar to make a quick note, just in case he were to forget. He then finished up on dinner. He set Megumi’s portion on the table and covered it in plastic wrap.

“Thank you for the food,” Satoru said quietly before he began to eat his own portion. He couldn’t wait to get out of this place.

The rest of the night progressed as it always did. He took a shower before soaking in the tub for about an hour, the moments of the day passing through his mind. Once he was done he would get into bed and stare at the ceiling, trying to quiet his mind, eventually falling asleep.

His days passed by the same they always did. They never really changed; everything was so painfully mundane and routine. Satoru was sure that this band would help him break the horrible cycle. He was embarrassed to admit it, but he was looking forward to Sunday. In fact, he couldn’t wait.

The next two days Hiroto and Kanato were exploding with energy. While they ate lunch they couldn’t stop talking about the band and what sorts of jobs they’d want.

“What instruments are we all going to play?” Hiroto asked, looking at Kanato and Satoru.

“Since I already know guitar, I figured I would take that over,” Kanato answered with a smile, leaning back against the chainlink fence.

Satoru shrugged, “I don’t know. I never really thought about it. What do you want to play, Hiroto?”

Hiroto placed a finger to his chin, seeming to be in thought, “I’ve always thought the drums were pretty cool. So I think I would play those.”

Kanato’s eyes lit up, “I think you’d make a really cool drummer!” he then looked to Satoru, “that leaves you to be our bassist.”

Satoru sighed, “that’ll probably be the easiest to learn. But who’s going to sing for us?”

Hiroto shook his head, "definitely not me. I can’t carry a tune to save my life. I nominate Kanato.”

Kanato’s eyes widened, “me? You really think I’m the guy for the job?”

Satoru smiled, “we gotta see you sweat too. It can’t be just Hiroto and I struggling at something new. You should have to suffer with us too.”

Hiroto laughed, “It would be fun to see Kanato struggle at something for once.”

Kanato hung his head in defeat. “Alright alright, you guys win,” he sighed.

Hiroto smiled, pulling Kanato in and ruffling his hair, “I’m sure we’ll all do great.”

Satoru nodded, “exactly. Especially with Mr. Expert over here,” he teased.

Kanato rolled his eyes, shoving Hiroto off him, “okay we should head back to class. I don’t want to get in trouble for being late.”

Hiroto and Satoru nodded, gathering their things and heading back inside their respective classrooms.

Satoru couldn’t help but smile seeing how invigorated the two were.

When he got back to class he started to draw the three of them playing their instruments. Satoru also came up with outfit ideas.

Satoru became so engrossed in what he was drawing that he didn’t hear the bells chiming, signifying the end of the day.

Kanato tapped him on the shoulder, “hey, school’s over,” he said then took notice of Satoru’s sketches and a sly smile appeared on his face. “Oh? What’s this? I thought someone wasn’t interested in this band stuff.”

Satoru quickly shut his notebook and packed his stuff. “Whatever. I was just bored. You know I draw random stuff all the time.”

Kanato nodded slowly, “riiight. I totally believe you,” he said sarcastically. “It’s okay to admit that you actually care about the band and that you’re excited,” he said, crossing his arms.

“Yeah yeah, you think whatever you want. I will neither confirm nor deny.”

After Satoru packed up all his things he headed down to the lockers with Kanato, waiting for Hiroto who was talking with his horde of girls.

However, Hiroto didn’t take long to shake them off and joined Kanato and Satoru. They changed their shoes before saying their farewells as per usual.
