Chapter 14 - The Mark He Left

Chapter 14 - The Mark He Left

Apr 06, 2026

The sound of the slap didn’t fade.
It stayed.
Sharp. Echoing. Alive.
Arjun Malhotra didn’t move.
He stood exactly where she had left him, his jaw tight, his gaze fixed on the door like it might open again and undo what had just happened.
But it didn’t.
And neither did he.
For a moment, even his breath felt controlled—like reacting was beneath him. Like feeling anything at all was unnecessary.
Then—
Something shifted.
Not anger.
Not regret.
Something far more dangerous.
Recognition.
Because for the first time in his life—
Someone hadn’t just challenged him.
She had rejected him.
A faint smirk touched his lips.
Slow. Barely there.
“Interesting…” he murmured.
And then he turned—
And walked out.
Like nothing inside him had just changed.
The world outside hadn’t stopped.
The party continued like nothing had happened.
Soft laughter. Low voices. Glasses clinking.
Fake normal.
Riddhi stood at the far end of the room.
Still.
Too still.
Her arms crossed tightly—not for comfort, but control. Her posture straight, her chin lifted just enough to hide the fact that something inside her was still shaking.
Her lips—
Ruined.
The soft color she had applied earlier was now smudged. Uneven. Faded at the edges.
A mark.
Not loud.
But not invisible either.
And in a room like this—
That was enough.
Her fingers twitched, almost rising to fix it—
But she stopped.
No.
She wouldn’t erase something she hadn’t chosen.
“Wow…”
The voice was soft.
Too soft.
Riddhi closed her eyes for half a second.
Of course.
Nidhi.
“Should I say it,” she continued, stepping closer, slow and deliberate, “or should I let everyone figure it out?”
Riddhi turned.
Her expression already hard.
“Say what?”
Nidhi didn’t answer immediately.
She circled her slightly.
Her gaze dipped.
Paused.
Returned.
That was all it took.
A soft laugh escaped her.
“Oh,” she said lightly. “That explains a lot.”
Riddhi’s jaw tightened.
“Explains what?”
Nidhi stepped closer.
Too close.
Her voice dropped.
“You might want to check your lipstick.”
Riddhi froze.
Then instinct took over.
Her hand moved—
Too fast.
Too obvious.
The moment her fingers touched her lips—
She knew.
Too late.
A ripple moved through the room.
Subtle.
Quiet.
But present.
People noticed.
And that was enough.
Riddhi dropped her hand.
Her cheeks flushed—
Not from embarrassment.
From anger.
“What kind of people are you?” she snapped, her voice cutting clean through the noise. “So powerful, so important—and this is what you do?”
Nidhi didn’t flinch.
If anything—
She looked entertained.
“Relax,” she said casually. “I didn’t say anything wrong.”
“That was wrong.”
“Only if there’s something to hide.”
Riddhi stepped forward.
Her voice dropped.
Colder now.
Steadier.
“Or maybe you just don’t have anything better to do.”
The energy shifted.
Subtly.
But enough.
Because this wasn’t playful anymore.
Nidhi’s eyes sharpened.
“Oh, I have plenty to do,” she replied calmly. “But this is far more interesting.”
Her gaze flicked again.
Deliberate.
“Then find better interests.”
“And you should fix your lipstick.”
Silence.
Thin.
Sharp.
A line drawn.
Clear.
Riddhi inhaled slowly, holding back the next words.
Because if she said them—
There would be no coming back.
And then—
He entered.
No announcement.
No sound.
But the room felt it.
Arjun Malhotra.
Conversations dimmed.
Movements slowed.
Not forced.
Not commanded.
Just… taken.
His gaze moved once.
And found her.
Riddhi.
For a second—
Everything stopped.
Because everything that had happened—
Was still there.
Unspoken.
Burning.
Riddhi looked away instantly.
Her heartbeat stumbled—
Not from fear.
From memory.
And that made her angrier.
Arjun didn’t react.
Didn’t acknowledge the tension.
Didn’t acknowledge her.
He walked forward like nothing had happened.
Like he hadn’t crossed a line.
Like she hadn’t slapped him.
Like her hand hadn’t left a mark on his face—
And something deeper under his skin.
But the silence around him—
Said otherwise.
From across the room—
Simran Kaur Malhotra watched.
Calm.
Still.
Perfect.
But her eyes missed nothing.
Riddhi’s flushed face.
Nidhi’s amusement.
Arjun’s stillness.
And that subtle shift—
That didn’t belong to indifference.
It belonged to interest.
Dangerous interest.
Her gaze rested on Riddhi.
One second longer than necessary.
Then moved away.
Unreadable.
Near the edge—
Nandita stood still.
Watching only one thing.
The distance between them.
Riddhi.
And Arjun.
Her fingers curled slightly at her side.
Controlled.
Contained.
But not calm.
Something had shifted.
And she felt it.
Without a word—
She turned.
And walked out.
The restroom door closed behind her.
Silence.
Heavy.
Loud.
Nandita stood in front of the mirror.
Staring.
Not blinking.
Because if she blinked—
She would see it again.
And she didn’t want to.
But she did.
Riddhi.
Arjun.
Too close.
Too real.
Too undeniable.
“No…” she whispered.
“That didn’t happen.”
Her hands moved fast.
Tap on.
Water running.
Cold.
She splashed it on her face.
Again.
Again.
As if she could erase it.
But it stayed.
Clearer.
Sharper.
Her fingers tightened against the sink.
Her breathing uneven.
Then—
She stopped.
Slowly.
Lifted her head.
Looked at herself.
And this time—
There was no denial.
Only truth.
Cold.
Sharp.
Final.
“This ends here.”
The water stopped.
Silence returned.
And then—
A sound.
Soft.
Barely there.
But enough.
Her body stilled.
Her eyes moved to the door.
Not fully closed.
Just slightly open.
A thin line of darkness cutting through the light.
Her voice dropped.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
She stepped forward.
One step.
Then another.
Her hand reached the door.
Paused.
Then pushed.
The corridor—
Empty.
No footsteps.
No shadows.
Nothing.
And yet—
She knew.
Someone had been there.
Not a guess.
Not a doubt.
A certainty.
Someone had watched.
Not just the moment—
Everything.
Her reaction.
Her expression.
Her truth.
Her weakness.
Her fingers curled slowly.
Because one thing became terrifyingly clear—
That person didn’t just see.
They understood.
And in a world like this—
Understanding wasn’t harmless.
It was power.
Somewhere beyond that empty corridor—
Someone smiled.
Because now—
They knew exactly where to strike.
And the most dangerous part?
Nandita had just declared—
“This ends here.”
But she didn’t realize—
For someone else—
It had just begun.

Who was watching…
and were they planning to destroy her—
or use her?
