Episode III — Shadows Lurking in the Darkness

Chapter 5: The Whistler (Part 1)

Seated at the beach-side tables outside the In-Side-Burgers restaurant, Michael and his friends catch up. Laughter and chatter fill the air as they eagerly dig into their food. Gebmar sits quietly, feeling somewhat out of place. He hesitates, examining his burger with uncertainty, poking at the spongy bread and cautiously peeking inside. The mood shifts as Michael’s friends, intrigued, turn their attention to him.

Sensing their curious stares, Gebmar nervously asks, “What’s up?”

Kyle, noticing Gebmar’s hesitation, inquires, “Not a fan of the burger?”

“I’ve never encountered food like this before,” Gebmar admits. “It’s just so . . . different.”

“Never seen a burger before? Are you serious?” Monique asks, raising an eyebrow.

Michael steps in quickly to explain, “Antonio is from Agartha, where burgers aren’t really a thing.”

“Agartha, the mage capital? And they don’t have burgers there? What do they eat then? Rocks? No offense,” Kyle jests.

“It’s . . . let’s say it’s a unique cuisine,” says Michael.

“Give it a try, Antonio. You’ll love it,” Mark encourages, urging Gebmar to take a bite.

Gebmar cautiously lifts the burger, contemplating it silently as Jessica and Monique whip out their phones to capture the moment.

Here we go again with those stupid magic mirrors that modern humans are so obsessed with, Gebmar thinks to himself, a little annoyed.

Jessica starts a live video for her social media, positioning herself in front of Gebmar as she begins speaking to her followers.

“Check it out, guys! Meet our new friend, Antonio. Can you believe he’s about to try his very first burger? Yep, that’s right. Has never even seen one before! Can you imagine?” she says, altering her tone for the camera.

Gebmar cannot help but roll his eyes in response to Jessica’s dramatic introduction.

Michael’s attention in that moment is drawn to a peculiar ring carved from amethyst on Jessica’s index finger. He realizes that each of his friends wears a similar ring, all on their index fingers.

“What’s the deal with those rings you’re all wearing? They’re pretty cool. Where did you get them?” asks Michael.

His friends exchange glances, momentarily quiet.

With a smile, Kyle turns to Michael and replies, “Yeah, they’re pretty cool, right? It was a limited edition from a renowned designer. Mark’s father has some connections, so he hooked us up.”

“Mark, could you snag one for me? I’ll pay you later,” says Michael.

“Sorry, pal; we managed to snag the last few from the collection. I’ll keep you posted if they release a new batch, though!” Mark apologizes.

“Ah, that’s a bummer,” Michael replies, disappointed.

Meanwhile, Gebmar takes a bite of the burger, finding it tasteless and unfamiliar. He tries to swallow, but the strange texture and crumbs cause him to cough violently. Concerned, Michael swiftly turns to offer Gebmar some soda.

“Are you okay, Antonio?” Jessica asks, halting her filming.

“Here, have some of this. It might help,” says Michael, offering Gebmar the soda. Gebmar declines, shaking his head as he continues to cough.

“Thanks, but I’ll pass. That soda stuff feels weird in my mouth, too. I’ll just go to the restroom real quick,” Gebmar manages to say between coughs.

Michael watches with concern as Gebmar walks away, coughing persistently. Unnoticed by everyone around, the Whistler detaches from the mage’s shadow and attaches himself to Gebmar’s.

“I guess his first burger experience didn’t go as planned,” Kyle remarks casually as he munches on some fries.

“Hey, Mike, you seemed a bit down earlier. Is everything all right?” Monique inquires, her concern evident.

Michael hesitates, his gaze falling to his food as he grapples with his emotions. Finally, he begins to speak, avoiding direct eye contact with his friends. “It’s a bit of a long story—”

Gebmar steps into the men’s restroom, relieved to find it unoccupied. With a flick of his wrist, he activates his magic, enveloping himself in a soft, neon-blue glow. He summons a small orb of water, suspended mid-air like a playful jellyfish. Gebmar guides the floating orb toward his lips. As he opens his mouth, the water extends gracefully, gliding smoothly down his throat. A satisfied sigh escapes him as he leans back against the wall, allowing the soothing sensation of the water to relax him.

“So much better. The texture of modern human food is so awful,” Gebmar murmurs to himself. “If only I could experience flavors. Perhaps then, the burger thing wouldn’t have been so dreadful.” He shuts his eyes, enjoying the tranquility of the restroom.

As Gebmar indulges in his brief break, a shadowy creature quietly disengages from his shadow and transforms into a tall, emaciated man sporting a broad-brimmed hat. The Whistler fixes its bright, yellow, pupil-less gaze upon the oblivious deva. While Gebmar remains lost in his thoughts, eyes shut, the Whistler’s attention drifts to the dagger dangling, now unprotected, from the deva’s belt. A sinister grin stretches across the creature’s face, exposing a row of jagged teeth.

Mike’s friends must think I’m such a weirdo. It’s so obvious that I’m not human. Maybe I shouldn’t have come, it must be so embarrassing for— Gebmar’s thoughts halt abruptly as he senses subtle movement near his dagger, accompanied by an eerie, faint whistle that echoes around him. Startled, he opens his eyes and spins around, only to be confronted by a towering specter looming over him.

“What the—” Gebmar’s words are cut short when the Whistler lunges at him.

The specter exerts tremendous pressure, forcefully pinning Gebmar against the wall. Reaching out dark tendrils, the Whistler tries to seize the Axis Mundi Dagger from Gebmar. The specter’s advance is abruptly halted as Gebmar undergoes a swift transformation, morphing into his elemental form, and radiating a brilliant, blinding light.

“Back off you creepy bastard!” Gebmar shouts, now fully transformed into his elemental state, ready to confront the Whistler head-on.

A god made a mistake, and the universe is still paying the price.

Chaos’s Key is an epic fantasy saga where hidden realms exist alongside our own: astral planes, shadow dominions, elemental kingdoms, and the secret world of Agartha beneath the Mediterranean Sea.

Long before the modern world, a single act of power fractured reality, igniting a war that reshaped every realm.

Now, that past is returning.

Reborn as Michael Dryad, heir to the Throne of Agartha, he carries fragments of a forgotten existence and a power he was never meant to wield.

As ancient forces awaken and enemies return from exile, the balance between worlds begins to collapse.

Some powers were never meant for mortals. Some mistakes were never meant to be undone.
