Chapter - 16 close.. but not to enough

Chapter - 16 close.. but not to enough

Apr 13, 2026

He almost touched her.
And that was the problem.
Because Arjun Malhotra didn’t “almost” do anything.
He either took… or he didn’t move at all.
Tonight—
He stopped.
And he didn’t know why.
The room wasn’t silent.
It was aware.
Every breath. Every movement. Every inch of space between them—
felt deliberate.
Riddhi stood near the window, arms folded, gaze outside… but not seeing anything.
Because she could feel him.
Behind her.
Watching.
Not casually.
Not normally.
But like he was trying to understand something that refused to make sense.
“You do realize…” his voice came, slow, controlled, almost thoughtful,
“…things are different now.”
Riddhi didn’t turn.
“Are they?”
Flat.
Unbothered.
And that—
shifted something.
Arjun pushed himself off the bed.
One step.
Then another.
Slow.
Measured.
He wasn’t closing distance.
He was testing it.
“They are,” he said, voice lower now, quieter, more dangerous,
“We’ll have to sleep in the same room.”
Silence followed.
But not empty silence.
This one—
waited.
Riddhi turned.
Not startled.
Not hesitant.
Just aware.
“And?”
One word.
But it didn’t question.
It dismissed.
That smile returned on his lips.
Slight.
Interested.
He stepped closer.
Close enough now that her breath could have touched him—if she let it.
“Means…” he murmured, gaze locked on hers,
“I might come closer at night.”
A pause.
A slow inhale.
“Maybe hold you.”
The air changed.
Not soft.
Not romantic.
Heavy.
Sharp.
Waiting.
But Riddhi—
didn’t move.
Didn’t step back.
Didn’t even blink.
Instead—
a small smile appeared.
Not nervous.
Not shy.
Controlled.
“You talk too much.”
And just like that—
she walked past him.
The moment broke.
Not because it ended—
But because she refused to stay in it.
The washroom door shut.
Soft.
Final.
Arjun stood still.
Then—
a low chuckle escaped him.
Quiet.
Genuine.
“Interesting…”
But this time—
he wasn’t mocking her.
He was thinking.
The door opened again.
And for the first time—
Arjun Malhotra paused.
Not visibly.
But internally—
something shifted.
She looked different.
Not because of what she wore.
But because of how she carried it.
There was no effort.
No awareness.
No need to impress.
Just—
presence.
Unfiltered.
Uncontrolled.
And for a brief second—
he didn’t say anything.
Didn’t move.
Just watched.
Riddhi noticed.
Of course she did.
But she didn’t react.
Didn’t acknowledge it.
Didn’t give it weight.
She simply walked past him.
Again.
And then—
it hit his foot.
Soft.
Unexpected.
He looked down.
A pillow.
A blanket.
Placed.
Not thrown.
Not forced.
Decided.
His gaze lifted.
Slowly.
Landing on her.
Riddhi climbed onto the bed like the conversation was already over.
“You can sleep there.”
No hesitation.
No explanation.
Silence.
Sharp.
Clean.
“What is this?” his voice dropped.
Not loud.
But it carried authority.
Riddhi looked at him.
Finally.
“Arrangement.”
His eyes narrowed.
“We’re married.”
Clear.
Firm.
Final.
She didn’t flinch.
Didn’t soften.
Didn’t hesitate.
“Contract marriage.”
That landed.
Harder than expected.
Because it wasn’t rebellion.
It was clarity.
The space between them changed.
Not distance.
Definition.
“You said it yourself,” she added, leaning back, completely at ease,
“Don’t mix things.”
He stepped closer again.
Slower this time.
More aware.
“And you think I am?”
She tilted her head slightly.
“Aren’t you?”
Silence.
Different now.
Because control—
was shifting.
Arjun exhaled.
A faint smile returned.
Not dominant.
Not mocking.
Interested.
“You’ve changed.”
Riddhi shrugged lightly.
“Maybe I just understood faster.”
That line—
stayed.
Because it wasn’t defiance.
It was evolution.
Arjun looked at the pillow again.
Then back at her.
Then—
he picked it up.
Dropped it back on the floor.
And lay down.
No argument.
No force.
No dominance.
And that—
was the most unexpected move of the night.
Riddhi blinked once.
Just once.
But she said nothing.
Instead—
she turned away.
Neither of them slept.
Because the silence—
was louder than anything they said.
Across the city—
Nandita wasn’t trying to stay calm anymore.
She was trying to stay in control.
And those two things—
weren’t the same.
“You took your time.”
The voice came from behind.
Low.
Sharp.
Waiting.
Nandita didn’t turn.
“You were already watching.”
A step forward.
And then—
Harshit.
He didn’t smile fully.
Just enough.
“You noticed.”
“You made sure I did.”
“Good.”
A pause.
“Makes things easier.”
“What do you want?”
Direct.
Cold.
He stepped closer.
“To help you.”
She laughed.
Once.
Dry.
“Help me?”
His gaze didn’t move.
“We want the same thing.”
“And what is that?”
A pause.
Then—
“To bring him down.”
Silence.
Sharp.
Immediate.
“And what do you get?”
His smile shifted.
Colder.
“Something in return.”
“What?”
His eyes darkened slightly.
“That depends…”
A pause.
“…on how far you’re willing to go.”
Elsewhere—
A table.
A decision.
Already made.
“Arjun Malhotra has crossed the line.”
“No denial.”
“No delay.”
“Proceed.”
And just like that—
it wasn’t a suspicion anymore.
It was a move.
Back in the room—
Arjun lay awake.
Eyes open.
Mind still.
But not empty.
Because for the first time—
someone hadn’t tried to get closer to him.
She had drawn a line.
And walked away.
And instead of breaking it—
He let it stay.
That wasn’t weakness.
That was curiosity.
And curiosity—
was far more dangerous.
Because somewhere—
without realizing—
Riddhi wasn’t being protected.
She was being positioned.
At the center.

And the moment she drew the line—
Someone else decided to erase it.

If you were Riddhi… would you trust a man who didn’t cross the line—or fear why he didn’t?

And what do you think Arjun wants more right now—control… or her?
