He is standing right behind her, his shadow towering over us both. She lets go of me so fast I stumble back; I almost fall off my stool, but I feel Bane press his body against me, stopping me from hitting the floor.
I look up at the vent and catch a glimpse of a face—it looks furious, watching from the shadows of the ceiling.
"You made a huge mistake," Colton says, his voice dropping to a terrifying, monstrous register.
"Please, Sir! I am sorry!" the doppelgänger begs, her voice turning into a high-pitched whine.
My hip began to ache, feeling like a bunch of needles were being driven into my side. "Oww..." I whined out.
I saw Colton’s expression grow even darker. "Matthan, can you walk?" he asked. His voice was soft, but it had a rough, dangerous edge to it.
I nodded yes.
"Go to the back and rest your hip. Everything will be fine," he said in a calm tone. I nodded okay and began to limp away.
As I made my way through the hall, I heard Colton yelling behind me, but he was speaking in a language I didn’t know. I almost reached the room, but the pain in my hip became too much. I felt myself collapsing, sliding down the wall. "This hurts so fucking much!" I cried out.
The lights began to flicker. Through the pain, I heard a beautiful voice singing. I couldn't tell what the song was, but it was incredibly calming. I looked down the hall and saw a tall figure standing there.
"Oh shit... help," I whispered. "I'm scared."
"Don't be afraid," the figure said in a deep voice.
"Who... who are you?" I whispered.
He stepped out of the shadows. He was clearly a doppelgänger, but he looked of Asian descent, and his eyes were a piercing, light red.
"Hi. My name is Sev," he said in a deep tone.
"Hi... my—" I couldn't finish. The tension in my throat felt like sand, making it hard to speak.
He laughed softly. "I know who you are. You’re Matthan. You are Colton’s little mouse. He talks a lot about you."
Why do I feel so safe around him? His presence was so soothing. "Oh... he does?" I whispered.
"Yep, he does," Sev said, sitting down closer to me but still keeping a respectful distance. He was very tall, but he wasn't muscular like Colton; he was built differently.
"How do you know Colton?" I asked.
"Well, I've known him since I was a baby," he said.
I see him smiling softly. It’s not like he’s mean or evil; it’s like he’s a kind soul in this evil place. "So, you’re nice, like Penny?" I ask.
I see Sev blush deep red. "Penny is very beautiful, isn’t she?" he says, looking away toward the hallway.
That’s cute, I think. He has a crush on her. "How old are you, Sev?" I ask.
He looks back at me. "I am twenty," he says in a calm tone.
"Wow. I haven’t met someone younger than me in a long time. I’m twenty-three," I said.
He looks confused for a second. "No, you’re twenty-four. Today is your birthday. Happy Birthday," he says.
My heart stops. What? Today is February 14th already? I’d completely lost track of the days. "Thank you," I whisper, stunned.
"Colton said that you like sweets, like me," he says in a sweet tone.
"Yes, I do."
I see him slide over a cake pop that looks handmade. It has a little "24" written on it. I smile, feeling a lump in my throat. "Thank you, Sev. Did you make this?"
"Yep! I love to bake. I found a cake mix that wasn't expired, and I used it with milk and made the frosting all by myself," he said with a huge, proud smile.
