After the 119th job, the the two finally managed to scrounge enough money to pay the rent for the month. However they both looked like shit and were walking like zombies as they slowly approached Ali Gabe with the envelope full of cash. Drake was hunched over with his shorn torn and eyes with black underneath them and Violet had her hat bent, her hair frazzled and outfit covered in dirt marks and tears and not the hot kind.
They slowly handed the cash to Gabe like they were under water.
Gabe, after counting the amount he needed.
“Great, this covers just about for this month. Can’t wait for the next month. Now have a good night.”
Without saying anything, they nodded and walked slowly back towards their apartment. They were walking like they were underwater with their backs slouched, their heads low and their spirits turn to shit. They did not say anything as they slowly made their way upstairs to their place. Finally after what felt like hours on a five minute climb, Drake opened the door and the two slowly walked in. Slowly, they both sat side by side on the edge of their bed. They were silent, faces sunk, and gazing into nothing. Until finally Drake sunk his face into his hands and muttered.
Drake, muttered repeatedly
“Fuck.”
Violet on the other hand, her face broke and was bursting into tears. Her cries were loud enough that to shake the glasses in the room. And all the while Drake continued crushing to himself louder every time.
Violet, her face full of tears and smeared make up.
“I can;t handle this shit any more. I’m going to lose my mind.”
Drake, finally lifting his head up
“That last job was seriously the worst one yet. I honestly thought I was going to die a second time.”
Violet
“Are you saying we agree on the same thing?”
Drake.
“FUCK YES!! That’s how bad it was. It was absolutely insane. I am seriously this close to developing dissociative identity disorder.....................fucking retail.”
Violet
“We can’t keep doing this every month. What are we going to do?”
Drake.
“There’s nothing we can do. So long as we need money we are either going to need jobs or be friends with a millionaire or break the law. I mean what else is there?”
Violet rubbed her eyes of her tears and looked at the floor. Feeling hopeless. Then she looked up when she heard the sounds of plastic rattling. She looked to Drake holding something that resembled a sandwich.
Violet
“Where did you get that?”
Drake.
“Oh this? Someone gave me this. Not sure why though.”
And with that he took one big bite and chewed satisfactory.
An hour later. Drake is on the bathroom regurgitating the very same sandwich down the toilet with his knees on the floor.
Violet, snapped due to her hearing his spewing.
“Why the fuck would you accept a sandwich from a stranger!?”
Drake, finally getting his head out of the toilet
“I DON’T KNOW!”
Drake got out of the bathroom looking like the life had been drained out of him. Violet passed him a glass filled with water that was fizzing.
Violet
“Here, this is bicarbonate in water. This is clean out your mouth.”
Drake gargled it and spit it out to the sink. And with that he collapsed to the bed like he had the toughest fight of his life. He did not sleep though, he has too much on his mind. Violet looked at him and felt something new. Sympathy maybe? Nether the less she quietly sat in her side of the bed.
Violet, pulling her hair and clenching her fist.
“We can’t keep this up. Eventually we’re just going to get evicted again. And we clearly can’t take care of ourselves as you just demonstrated in there. But if I have to spend one more day waiting tables while they play grab ass all day I’m going to set fire to hell than there ever was.”
Drake, lifting his head from his pillow.
“We never talk about the inconsistencies of the weather in hell.”
Violet, annoyed
“Focus! why can’t you take this seriously?”
Drake
“Because I’ve been through this before. I don’t know if you noticed but I’ve been in hell for really long time. But yeah the job market kinda sucks right now and it’s clear that we are not gonna have a solid job any time soon.”
Violet, looking down
“I thought I had gotten over this already.”
Drake, raised eyebrow
“What do you mean?”
Violet, rubbing her arm.
“Nothing. It doesn’t matter.”
Drake, slowly getting up
“You sure cause it........”
Violet snapped and glared.
“I said it’s nothing. Drop it!”
Drake, hands raised
“Alright, alright. Message received. Just trying to help.”
Violet
“if you want to help then maybe you should do better to come up with a plan”
Drake, getting pissed off.
“Oh what like some kind of business plan? Oh yeah that’s a good idea. You want to take a loan from Lucifer himself while you’re at it?”
Violet was about to scream back at him with untold fury but pauses, her face frozen as if she was trying to process the very sentences that were said just now. Watching her in that state made Drake feel awkward but also relieved that he didn’t have to hear her screaming for the hundredth time today. After a few moments, her face finally moved. This time with a smile.
Violet, in a cheerful inspired mood.
“That’s it!”
Drake, confused
“What’s what now?”
Violet
“We start our own business. Be our own bosses!”
Drake
“Okay, but follow up......WHAT?!”
Violet, jumped up from the bed like a spring.
“Don’t you see? It makes sense. Everyone who hires us is either an asshole or a dumb ass. None of these jobs are great. And the ones that are they are not interested in hiring us. And if no one good will hire us, then we can hire ourselves! We’d be the ones to decides on our hours, how much money we earn, what clients we deal with and so on. We’d be the ones in control of our lives again.”
Drake
“You make it sound easier than it actually is. How exactly would we pull this off? We don’t even have a business idea let alone a business plan and I think you’re forgetting one thing.”
Violet
“Which is?”
Drake
“Money. We would need a lot of it and it’s not like any investors would be trust worthy. Especially if their in hell like we are. How do you think they ended up down here? Wasn’t because they were generous with their loans.”.
Violet,
“oh come on. With my mystical powers and your gorilla like physique. We can dominate what ever market.”
Drake, crossing arms
“And that market being?”
Violet
“I don’t fucking know. What do you excel at? Besides pissing people off and punching people of course.”
Drake, rubbing the back of his head.
“Good question. Most of the time I just steal crap, make em look better and sell them.”
Violet, rubbing her forehead.
“Yes you made that clear when we first met. Maybe I should handle the business side of things. What about selling stuff? like vintage clothes or antiques? That way we can bullshit peope into thinking what we sell is worth more than what it is. Especially online.”
Drake.
“And what exactly are we going to sell? our clothes?”
Violet, with a tiny bit of a sinister laugh.
“Oh leave that to me. I know exactly what we can sell.”.
Drake, looking more green while covering his mouth. On his way to the bathroom.
“Great tell me later cause I’m about to fire a second round.”
Violet,
“HOW BIG WAS THAT SANDWICH!?”
