I really wonder how much of Luca's issues with empathy stem from the environment he grew up in, and how much is just intrinsic. Something made Kova reach out to him as a kid, to become his summoned beast, but it seems to have faded as he got older. And, yet, he's trying to rediscover empathy now in order to connect with Roman, so he's not entirely lost.
Also, re: the final panel - those two are such goofs.
