The Midnight Double Shift: From Office Worker to Otherworld Lady

The Breakfast Scene: Breaking the Silence

The Breakfast Scene: Breaking the Silence

May 09, 2026

I step into the dining hall, expecting—hoping—to see a family relieved to see me alive. In a normal home, there would be hugs, "Are you okay?", and warm tea. But as I take my seat, the air feel like a frozen winter morning.
The clink of silverware is the only "greeting" I receive. My father doesn't look up from his documents. My mother is busy inspecting a lace handkerchief as if it is more important than her daughter's health. Even Orlando just stared at his plate, his face a mask of cold perfection.
There is no "Welcome back." There is no "We missed you."
It's like a funeral for a living person, I think, my heart is sinking. In my world, even the grumpy guy at the coffee shop would ask how I was doing if I vanished for a week. But here? In this 'Great House,' I'm just an empty chair that finally got filled.
I pick up my spoon, the cold silver biting into my palm. The food is expensive and delicious, but in this atmosphere, it tastes like ash. I realize then that the most expensive house in the kingdom is actually the poorest—because it is missing the one thing money couldn't buy: warmth.
I look around the table. The silence is heavy, like a suffocating blanket. The old Elanore would have sat there with her head down, blinking back tears. But I'm twenty-five, and I had survived enough "toxic office cultures" to know that silence only gives power to bullies.
I set my fork down with a deliberate clink.
"How have you been, Father?" I ask, with a steady and clear voice."How is your work at the capital? Is everything progressing well?"
The Duke looks startled. He slowly looks up from his papers, his eyes wide with genuine shock. He nods slowly. "Yes... everything is well. Why do you ask?"
"I was curious," I reply simply, then turn my gaze to my mother. "And you, Mother? How are your gatherings going? Did you attend the tea yesterday, or were you too worried about my condition to go?"
The Duchess nearly drops her spoon. She looks at Elanore as if she is seeing a ghost. Before my mother could stutter an answer, I turn to Orlando.
"And how is the Academy, Orlando? Are your studies satisfying your high standards?"
The three of them stare at me in total silence. They were used to a girl who was "childish" and ignored. Now, they are facing a woman who is looking them directly in the eye.
I'm not the girl who died of your cold behavior, the old Elanore has gone. You killed her with your cold shoulders. Now, you have to deal with me.
The Duke finally puts down his documents. For the first time in years, he isn't looking at a "childish distraction"—he is looking at his daughter.
"You seem different today, Elanore," he says, his voice deep and cautious. "Has something happened to you?"
Orlando doesn't hold back. He scoffs, his eyes sharp with annoyance. "Have you finally lost your mind, Elanore? Or is this another one of your childish games to get attention?"
I don't flinch. I don't cry. I just offer a small, polite smile that don't reach my eyes—the kind of smile I used on difficult clients.
"I am quite fine, Orlando," I reply smoothly. "However, I must be honest with you all. It seems the fall from the stairs left a bit of a fog in my mind. I've lost parts of my memory. I'm sure they will return little by little, but until then..."
I look directly at my father, his expression is unreadable.
"Please bear with me. If I seem 'different' or if my manners are not what you remember, I ask for your patience. I am simply trying to find my footing again. If I act rudely or speak out of turn, please forgive my... temporary condition."
I give that reply with such a straight face and such cold, professional calm that the room becomes silent again. I'm not begging for forgiveness; I'm informing them of the new rules.
There, Now, whenever I act like a 25-year-old woman instead of a 12-year-old girl, I can just blame the 'fog.' Thanks to my job experience I can handle difficult clients and situations with a smile .
The Duchess doesn't even pause her breakfast. She continues buttering her bread with surgical precision, her eyes never leaving her plate. To her, Elanore is not a daughter—she is a social liability that has finally stopped making noise. She doesn't care about "memory loss" or "changes." Her world revolves around the upcoming galas and ensuring Orlando is prepared to take over the House of Valerius. Since Orlando is the future, Elanore is invisible .
But the Duke... the Duke seems different.
He doesn't offer a hug or a warm word—that isn't his way—but now he doesn't pick his papers back up. He watches his daughter with a newfound intensity. In his cold, calculating mind, he sees that the "weak link" in his family has suddenly become strong.
"I see," the Duke says , his voice sounding less like a father and more like a King who has just found a new weapon. "A loss of memory is... unfortunate. But this new 'maturity' of yours? It is much preferred over your previous behavior. See that you maintain this composure."
I feel a chill. He isn't happy to see that I'm "well"; he is happy she is finally "useful" and "perfect."
I see how it is, I think, glancing between my indifferent mother and my calculating father. My mother has deleted me from her schedule, and my father is ready to put me to work. I'm not a daughter to them. I'm just an asset. I'll not afraid of them and change this house entirely.
