Littleroot Town. A small village in the southern area of the Hoenn region. The villagers lived their peaceful lives in there. As soon as the sun rose high in the sky and brought light to the trees, houses and paths, the neighbors began their daily routines. Chores, jobs, tasks, whether by themselves or accompanied by their human and Pokémon friends. That was not different for the people working at the Pokémon Lab, one of the most prestigious locations in the region. Professor Birch was a prominent figure when it came to Pokémon research, and as such, his prolific investigations led him all around the world, whether for speeches or for further researching Pokémon in their natural areas. That didn’t mean the lab ended up unattended in his absence: his assistants usually took care of things until he came back.
However, since recent times, there was a new leading figure at the place.
Along the sun, there were some people getting ready for the day in a house relatively close to the lab. Inside the kitchen, already having breakfast while looking at some papers on a desk, there was a young woman in her mid-twenties. Brown hair that reached her neck, with two long bangs falling by the side of her face that she always tried to avoid biting along with her toast. She was ready for work, with jeans, a blouse and her white lab coat, but she couldn’t leave just like that. There was something she needed to do first, like checking those papers. Some noises in a different room told her she didn’t need to wait much more, so she finished her toast and coffee, put the dishes aside and picked up all her belongings for another workday.
She stood in front of a mirror hanging above a small table. This woman always took one last look at her hair and make-up before leaving, but at that moment, her eyes couldn’t avoid looking at the little frames on the desk. Different pictures, or rather, different memories, placed in chronological order. And as such, her eyes usually went to the first one. She took it to take a closer look. Two girls appeared in the photo, with one of them resembling her, but much younger and wearing a red bandana over her head. Along with her, there was another girl with long brown hair and a yellow T-shirt. Both of them smiled to the camera, nervous and excited. That memory made the woman smile.
“It’s been so long since that day…”, murmured the woman.
“I know, right?”.
Suddenly, another person came out from the corridor. A tall woman, with long brown hair that reached her back, a yellow blouse and a blue skirt. She was polishing the last details of her outfit and saw the other woman looking at the picture. The tall woman approached her and hugged her from the back, something they both enjoyed. Their eyes sparkled at the look of the picture.
“Look at you, May!”, exclaimed the tall woman with sweet voice. “You looked quite shy back then”.
“Not all of us can be as photogenic as you, Brenda”, joked May.
“That’s not true. You look beautiful as well in every picture”, pointed out Brenda. “Can’t you see it?”.
One by one, May and Brenda looked at the other pictures on the desk: their first Contest together at Hearthome City wearing their idol outfits, a visit to Kanto to meet Professor Oak a few years later, their graduation at college with elegant dresses… and the most important of them all. Both of them, under a flowered arch, wearing beautiful white dresses, short after saying “Yes, I do” to each other. A lot of memories that began with that single picture, with both of them smiling shyly at the camera before going on their first adventure together.
“I still remember that day. My life was dull and empty back then, but it all changed… thanks to you”, said Brenda.
“Don’t be silly”, complained May. “I just helped you a bit, but everything you got, you got it yourself”.
“That’s not true. You helped me and encouraged me so many times. I could do so many things because your were there with me. Thanks for everything… and for loving me”, said Brenda.
“Actually, I should thank you. If it weren’t for your words back then, I don’t know what would have happened to me. You helped me understand I was worthy of love and made me open up”, said May.
The memories of the obstacles they overcame came back to them. They were hard, but they never gave up to themselves and to each other. And thanks to that, to the love they shared, they were still together, working on their new lives. May was the second-at-hand of the Pokémon Lab and Brenda became a Gym Leader and gave classes about how to raise Pokémon. But all those achievements paled in comparison to their proudest milestone: sharing a live together. May turned around, their eyes meeting each other. And then, a kiss. A sincere kiss in their morning, just like every morning, but every one was more blissful than the last one.
“I love you, May”, said Brenda.
“I love you too, Brenda”, said May.
They wanted to take a bit more time, but life doesn’t always provide such pleasure. Their SmartRotoms rang at the same time, signaling the time they should leave for their respective jobs.
“Gotta go, I guess”, joked Brenda. “That Gym won’t run itself. See you at lunch?”.
“Count on it. I’ll have some time after I finish this paper, so I’ll bring lunch with me”, said May.
Leaving the frame on its original place, both women prepared themselves and left their homes for a new day of their lives. And just like in that original picture, they were both still smiling after so many years, and there would still be years to come full of smiles and love to share.
And thus, this concludes another story within the Pokémon world. A place full of magic, mystery and feelings. A place where both human and Pokémon can explore its vast lands, but also the depths in their hearts. And as such, in this world there are more people like Brenda and May, living their lives and finding their true selves. What other stories are there to be told? For now, we should let this lovely couple enjoy the rest of their lives while we seek for those new stories and walk along their protagonists.
See you next time a trans spark shines brightly in the Pokémon world!
