In the dark of the night. Or as dark as Hell can be. Drake and Violet have their backs to the wall of a large building. Drake couldn’t see what it was but the more they got closer to the entrance the more he could see the details. It was abandoned, broken windows, boards nailed to it and signs that says library of hell.
Drake
“You’re secret hideout is in a library?”
Violet
“Well duh, it’s the last place anyone would look. Do any of those guys look like the type that would even touch a book?”
Drake,
“Good point. So how do you wanna do this? You have a secret passage way or door?”.
Violet
“This isn’t a spy movie. We’re just go in. Take as much shit and get out.”
They both looked at each other for a moment. Drake processing the surprisingly simplicity of it all.
Drake
“That’s it?”
Violet
“That’s it.”
They paused again and went silent. Until finally Drake said,
“Okay then. I’m too pissed to argue.”.
And with that, they both stood in front of the entrance door. Both lowered their knees to get ready for a fighting pose. Parallel to each other, they both got into position to deliver a straight punch. Violet had to conjure a purple giant fist while Drake just used his natural muscles. They waited until to the count of three and boom! They both smash through the door like it was made of paper machete. Woods pieces scattered and went everywhere in the room. They expected goons to swarm in but to their surprise, when they walked in, it was completely empty. No thug in sight, just a dark empty hall with nothing but book shelves and destroyed furniture.
The only thing they could find was whiskey at the far end, drinking heavily while on the couch, with clothes that looked like he had been tackled by bulls. He kept helping himself to whatever beverage he had as if he was trying to literally drown himself one bottle at a time. Whenever he finished he threw a bottle to the wall, not caring about the glass shattering to his side. His face had looked as if all hope had been drained from him.
Violet walked in towards him
“Whiskey? What happened? Why do you look like someone made you watch a sex tape of your ex girlfriend with your dad?”.
Drake walked in beside her
“I’m going to assume things didn’t work out.”
Whiskey, wailed while trying not to slur his words.
“Understatement of the year. I did everything right. I was being a good boss. Or at least I thought I was.”
He gets up but is too dizzy to walk and he just collapses in front of them, hands and knees on floor. He looks up and then sits on the floor.
Whiskey
“It was supposed to be so easy. I’d handle finances while Hogsten keeps them in line. But then for no reason he just disappears from the face of Hell. Leaving me alone to run everything. I tried to boss them around the same way you did. But nobody saw me as a threat compared to the great Violent Witch. The work was too much and before long they all turned on me. Saying the only reason i was in charge was because i was too much of a pussy to face you on my own. I don’t know if they were speaking figurative or literal but it all hurt the same.”
Whiskey then started sobbing.
“They took everything. Left me here with nothing. I don’t why i thought i could do this. I’m really am a worthless piece of shit who can’t do anything. Just like you thought I was.”
Violet, feeling a bit discomfort.
“I don’t recall saying that.”
Whiskey, sobbing and wailing even louder
“You didn’t have to. I could always feel it around you and you were right. I am worthless. I have nothing and I am nothing. If you’re here to kill me just get it over with. I’m starting to sober up right now.”
At first violet’s hand were glowing with pure purple energy with fire soaring out. She looked at him and saw how pathetic he was. And she remembered everything she was put through. Drake, didn’t say anything. He felt angry too but just looked at her, waiting to see what she was going to do.
Violet walked closer to him. Her face filled with anger, but then she saw the state he was in as she looked in his sobbing eyes with his hands sinking deep into his face. In that moment everyone expected the worst to come. She raised her hand but something happened. Instead of her blazing hand melting Whiskey in a fit of rage, her face sank and her anger had gone. She stared into nothing as if she was remembering something from her past. And so her fire hands had fade and she reached for something in her pocket. An envelope that she handed to Whiskey as he slowly raised his head to face her.
Violet, speaking in the softest tone no one heard her before.
“Here, inside this envelope is enough money to get you a place for at least three months. That should help you get your life sorted for the time being.”
Drake, his face froze as his jaw dropped and eyes widened.
“Are you insane? after all we went through to.......”
He paused when he could see she was ignoring him. And could see in her face that what she was doing was genuine. So he stays silent.
Whiskey, shakily as he held the note.
“I don’t understand.”
Violet
“Look, let’s just say we have more in common than you think. Especially now. And for what it’s worth. I’m sorry. For everything. Take care and see you around.”.
Drake watched Violet slowly walk out in the slowest footsteps he ever saw her take. She took a step into the night sky and walked out of the front door. Drake walked out after her and he could do was follow her as she dragged herself through the streets. Eventually both them stopped at an old bench by the bus stop with a pole that looks like it was falling apart like an old tooth pick. Both sat their bottoms down, staring into space while thinking about what happened. Drake looked to her in the state she was in, face soured, hunched over and feeling defeated. He felt the same as he leaned back.
Drake finally said
“What now? Back to square one?”
But she said nothing. Just sat there in the same sorry state. Until finally both of them heard a loud cheering noise and turned to their side and noticed something hectic. Hey see a large crowd of people cheering and celebrating. And along with the celebrations, there came fireworks, games, families barging in and hell inspired rides like roller coasters, gun games, ferris wheels and the corniest music you can imagine. Just a massive event that was happening right near them. With stands and stalls and tents of different colours.
Violet said blankly
“Looks like the annual hells festival is today. Guess we’ve been to busy to notice it coming up.”
Drake
“No kidding. Wanna........ Check it out?”
Violet turns to him
“You serious? We only have a few hundred left.”
Drake
“Yeah, but you know? Fuck it. it’s not like it’s going to cover rent anyway and after tonight i need to let off some steam. So?”.
Violet looked at drake and was silent for a moment. But then gives a little grin.
“Yeah. Fuck it.”
