The Shadow CEO’s Temporary Soulmate

Chapter 3: The Midnight Emergency

The taxi ride to the Obsidian Holdings tower cost Ren sixty dollars, a luxury that would have triggered a week-long panic attack just forty-eight hours ago. Tonight, he barely noticed the meter. His eyes were glued to his phone screen, replaying the eerie, distorted growl that had vibrated through the speaker at 2:14 AM.
I'm... losing control.
The corporate skyscraper looked like a silent, obsidian monolith against the ink-black night sky. The grand lobby was completely deserted, save for a single security guard who looked up with wide, anxious eyes as Ren burst through the revolving doors.
"Mr. Lin?" the guard asked, his voice shaking slightly. "The CEO's private lift has been unlocked for you. Please... hurry. The regional power grid for the upper floors is failing."
Ren didn't ask questions. He lunged into the silver elevator, pressing his thumb against the biometric scanner. The lift rocketed upward, skipping all eighty floors to deposit him directly into Vance's private residential penthouse.
The elevator doors slid open, and Ren was hit by a wall of freezing, sub-zero air.
The penthouse was pitch black. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows showed the city lights below, but inside, the luxury apartment was in ruins. A heavy mahogany dining table had been splintered completely in half. Shards of a shattered crystal chandelier littered the floor like jagged ice.
But the most terrifying thing was the sound.
A low, deep, guttural vibration hummed through the walls—a sound so heavy it rattled the fillings in Ren's teeth. It sounded like an apex predator cornered in the dark.
"Mr. Obsidian?" Ren called out, his voice small and trembling in the freezing air. His breath bloomed into thick, white clouds before him. "It's Ren. I'm here."
A sudden, violent crash erupted from the master suite at the end of the long corridor.
Ren walked toward the source, his cheap sneakers crunching loudly on broken glass. He pushed open the heavy bedroom door, and his breath caught completely in his throat.
The room was consumed by shifting, living shadows. They didn't behave like normal shadows; they bled from the center of the room like black ink dropped into water, stretching across the ceiling and crawling up the walls in jagged, violent waves. The sheer gravitational pressure in the space made Ren's knees buckle.
In the center of the chaos, kneeling on the shredded remains of a mattress, was Vance.
His tailored suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt torn to ribbons. Ren gasped as he looked at his boss's back. Thick, obsidian scales were actively erupting from Vance's spine, glinting with an unnatural, predatory sheen under the moonlight. His shoulder blades were flexing violently, pushing outward as if something massive and monstrous was trying to tear its way out from beneath his skin.
Vance snapped his head toward the door.
Ren took a terrified step back. Vance's face was partially covered in the same dark, lethal scales, tracing the sharp lines of his jaw. His hands had morphed into terrifying claws, his fingers digging deep into the floorboards, tearing the solid wood like wet paper. But it was his eyes that held Ren completely paralyzed.
The human gold was entirely gone. His eyes were two burning, unholy pools of crimson fire, dilated with pure, unadulterated agony and primal rage.
"Away..." Vance roared, the sound tearing from his throat in a dual-layered resonance—one part human, one part deep, rumbling beast. "Lin... run... get away from me!"
A massive wave of dark, concussive shadow energy blasted outward from Vance's body, shattering the remaining glass mirrors in the room. The force of the wind slammed Ren hard against the doorframe, knocking the wind from his lungs.
Vance let out a horrific, choked scream of agony, his head slamming against the floor as the black scales crept higher up his neck, threatening to consume his face entirely. The 50-year-old curse was finally breaking his human vessel. He was transforming into a monster, and he was going to destroy everything in his path.
Ren looked at the exit. He could run. He could take the elevator down, keep the signing bonus, and never look back.
As he looked at Vance, the multi-billionaire tyrant was currently weeping in agony on the floor, fighting with every ounce of his remaining humanity just to keep the shadows from expanding toward the door where Ren stood. He was suffering.
Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, Ren thought, a sudden, reckless surge of adrenaline overriding his fear. I am getting paid to stand my ground.
Instead of running away, Ren sprinted forward, leaping over the debris. He plunged directly into the swirling vortex of freezing, violent shadows. The closer he got, the harder it was to breathe, the dark energy tearing at his clothes and scratching his skin like phantom claws.
Vance looked up, his crimson eyes widening in absolute horror as he saw the fragile human running straight toward him. "No—!"
Ren didn't listen. He threw himself onto the bed, sliding onto his knees right in front of the thrashing, terrifying entity. With zero hesitation, Ren reached out and slammed both of his bare hands flat against Vance's scale-covered cheeks, forcing the giant to look directly at him.
The physical contact was instantaneous.
A violent, blinding flash of white energy erupted from the point where Ren's palms met Vance's skin. Ren let out a sharp cry as a massive psychological shockwave ripped through his mind, showing him a brief, terrifying vision of a colossal black dragon roaring in a void of endless fire.
Then, the storm stopped.
The swirling shadows in the room instantly collapsed, dissolving into nothingness. The freezing air began to warm up. Beneath Ren's hands, the jagged black scales on Vance's face began to soften, receding rapidly back into his skin like a retreating tide. The terrifying crimson fire in his eyes died down, bleeding back into a deep, clear, exhausted gold.
Vance gasped, his massive frame suddenly losing all its strength. He collapsed forward, his heavy forehead sinking directly into the crook of Ren's neck. His breathing was ragged, shallow, but completely human.
Ren sat frozen on the ruined mattress, his heart hammering at a thousand miles an hour, his bare hands still resting gently on the back of his boss's neck. He could feel the steady, rapid thumping of Vance's heart against his own chest.
For a long, agonizing minute, neither of them moved. The silence in the ruined penthouse was absolute.
Slowly, Vance tilted his head up, his golden eyes locking onto Ren's face from a distance of barely two inches. The proximity was suffocating. The intense, raw look of absolute shock and possessive realization burned in Vance's gaze.
"You..." Vance breathed, his voice a low, rough whisper against Ren's lips. "What are you?"
Ren, still terrified but stubborn to the core, let out a shaky, sarcastic breath. "I'm your underpaid personal assistant, Mr. Obsidian. And I think we need to talk about your medical condition."
