The pool was quiet.
Not empty—just quiet in the way sound softened over water.
Virel stood near the edge, one hand just beneath the surface. He moved it slowly, side to side, watching the ripples spread outward.
They didn’t move the way he expected.
They stretched, overlapped, then shifted again—like they were correcting themselves.
He tried again.
Slower this time.
The waves formed, curved, and met at the center. For a moment, they seemed to pause.
Then they moved back toward him.
Not fully. Not exactly.
Just enough to feel… off.
He held his hand still.
The surface settled.
A faint reflection looked back at him—blurred, broken by the last of the movement.
“Virel?”
Aria’s voice carried lightly across the space.
He didn’t answer right away.
He moved his hand once more.
The ripples spread.
Met.
Shifted.
For a second, he thought he could see the pattern before it formed.
Then it was gone.
“Virel.”
Closer now.
He pulled his hand out of the water and turned.
“Yeah,” he said. “Coming.”
Behind him, the surface returned to stillness.
No trace of what had been there.

For a moment, he thought it might happen again.

Virel’s curiosity often begins with small observations.
Not everything needs to be explained—sometimes noticing is enough.

just before it slipped away?
