The Shadow CEO’s Temporary Soulmate

Chapter 6: The Touch Experiment

The subterranean research facility of Obsidian Holdings was located five levels beneath the city's bedrock, far away from the polished glass and public glamour of the skyscraper above. Down here, the walls were constructed from reinforced matte-white steel, and the air smelled heavily of ozone, sterile chemicals, and cold machinery. It was a high-tech maze designed to test specialized proprietary logistics tech, but today, it served a far more volatile purpose.
Vance Obsidian stood before a massive, double-paned glass observation window, looking out over an empty testing chamber. He had removed his charcoal suit jacket, leaving him in a sleek black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled tightly up to his elbows.
Ren stood exactly three feet to his right, holding a digital tablet. Even at that distance, Ren could feel that something was deeply wrong. The ambient air around Vance was actively vibrating, humming with a tense, static electrical charge that made Ren’s skin prickle. The silver, glowing veins beneath the skin of Vance's forearms were throbbing violently, pulsing in time with a rapid, agonizing heartbeat. The stress from yesterday’s hostile board meeting with Marcus had left a dangerous, unstable magical residue inside Vance's core.
"The standard proximity is no longer sufficient," Vance growled, his voice a tight, strained baritone that vibrated through the metal flooring. He didn't look at Ren; his eyes were fixed on his own hands, his fingers clenching into tight fists as he fought down a wave of pain. "The dark ether is pooling heavily in my upper joints. It feels like molten lead moving through my veins. The five-foot boundary is barely keeping the surface quiet, Lin. Beneath the skin, my core is fracturing."
Ren looked up from his tablet, his analytical, nerdy mind immediately shifting into troubleshooting mode. He didn't see a terrifying monster; he saw a high-stakes engineering problem that required a logical solution.
"If simple proximity acts like a grounding wire to absorb your excess energy, then physics dictates that a wire works best when there is direct, unhindered conductivity," Ren reasoned, his voice steady and practical. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them until he was barely a foot away. "Air is a poor conductor, Mr. Obsidian. Let’s try an experiment. Let's see what happens if we remove the air variable entirely."
Without asking for permission, Ren reached out, closed the remaining distance, and firmly clamped his bare hand around Vance’s exposed right wrist.
The reaction was instantaneous and violent.
A visible, snapping spark of blue-white energy arched across the tiny gap between their skin, making a sharp crack sound that echoed through the sterile room. Vance let out a sudden, ragged gasp, his entire massive frame violently stiffening.
Ren gasped too, but not from pain. A sudden, massive rush of intoxicating warmth surged up his arm, flooding his chest and making his heart hammer wildly against his ribs like a trapped bird. It wasn't the agonizing, bone-shattering shockwave he had felt during the midnight emergency in the penthouse. This was smooth, magnetic, and deeply intense—a powerful, invisible vacuum pulling the dark, heavy pressure directly out of Vance’s body and grounding it safely into Ren’s neutral frequency.
Right before Ren's eyes, the angry, throbbing silver lines on Vance’s forearms began to rapidly recede. Like ink being drawn back into a pen, the glowing veins faded into smooth, olive skin within seconds. The suffocating, heavy gravity in the room vanished, replaced by an absolute, peaceful stillness.
Vance stood perfectly frozen, his head tilted down as he stared at Ren's small, pale hand resting against his thick wrist. The sheer velocity of the relief had stunned him. What usually took twenty minutes of agonizing proximity had occurred in less than three seconds of direct skin-to-skin contact.
Slowly, deliberately, Vance twisted his wrist within Ren's grip. He didn't pull away. Instead, his long, powerful fingers slid down, weaving smoothly between Ren’s fingers, locking their hands together in a tight, unyielding grip.
Vance’s skin was still burning hot, but it was no longer dangerous. It was a comforting, solid heat. He squeezed Ren's hand, his fingers tightening with a sudden, raw possessiveness that made Ren's breath catch in his throat. When Vance finally raised his head to look at his assistant, the gold in his pupils had darkened into a deep, molten amber, burning with an intense hunger that had absolutely nothing to do with his curse.
"Direct skin contact doesn't just ground the energy, Lin," Vance murmured, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous whisper that vibrated right through Ren's chest. He stepped closer, completely enveloping Ren in his towering shadow, his eyes fixed entirely on Ren's face. "It accelerates the suppression exponentially. It completely neutralizes the feedback loop before the pain can even manifest."
Ren swallowed hard, his throat dry as he looked at their locked fingers. The physical intimacy was sudden, intense, and completely outside his comfort zone as a professional assistant. "Mr. Obsidian... the contract only specified a five-foot radius. It didn't mention... this."
"The contract will be amended," Vance stated smoothly, his gaze tracking the slight tremor in Ren's lower lip. He didn't let go of Ren's hand. In fact, he pulled Ren just a fraction closer, ensuring their shoulders were completely brushing. "From this moment on, Lin, you are no longer just a passive shield. When the external pressure rises, or when we are forced into high-stress environments, you do not just sit near me. You hold on to me. Is that understood?"
Ren looked down at their joined hands, then up into the fierce, unyielding gold of his boss's eyes. He could feel the raw power humming just beneath Vance's skin, a dangerous storm held at bay solely by the touch of his own fingers. It was terrifying, but it was also exhilarating.
"Understood, Mr. Obsidian," Ren whispered, his practical mind already calculating the massive shift in their daily routine. "But if I'm holding your hand during corporate presentations, people are going to start asking a lot of questions."
Vance’s sharp lips curved into a dark, incredibly satisfied smile, his elongated canine teeth gleaming faintly in the sterile lights of the underground lab. "Let them ask, Lin. Let them try to figure out exactly why you belong to me."
