The Devil and The Designer

The Silent Guard

The Silent Guard

May 31, 2026

The transition from a high-stakes business arrangement to a genuine friendship didn't happen with a single grand gesture. Instead, it was being built in the quiet, exhausting hours between midnight and dawn in the penthouse atelier of the Mehara Grand. For Tanishka, the gala was now less than a week away, and the pressure had become a physical weight resting on her shoulders. Her "beauty and brains" were being tested by the demands of perfection and the sleepless nights that were starting to take their toll.

She stood before a massive drafting table, her hair pulled into a messy knot with a few loose strands framing her face. A charcoal smudge stained her left cheek, and her fingers were slightly stiff from hours of intricate needlework. She was currently struggling with the internal construction of a structured bodice—it needed to be as strong as armor but look as delicate as a spider’s web once the model took to the runway.

"You’re overworking the seams again," a voice said from the shadows near the balcony.

Tanishka didn't startle this time. She was becoming used to Reyansh’s presence in these late hours. The "King" of Mumbai often appeared when the rest of the world was asleep, trading his boardroom meetings and cold calculations for the stillness of her workspace. He walked toward her now, his tuxedo jacket discarded on a chair, his white silk shirt unbuttoned at the collar and his sleeves rolled up.

"I’m ensuring it doesn't fall apart under the heat of the runway lights," she replied without looking up, her voice thick with weary determination. "In my world, Reyansh, precision is everything. One loose thread can ruin an entire silhouette."

"Precision is one thing. Suffocating the fabric until it loses its soul is another," Reyansh remarked, coming to stand directly beside her. He didn't take the needle from her hand; instead, he simply reached out and held the edge of the heavy navy silk steady so she could finish the difficult stitch. "If you don't trust the material to hold its own weight, the audience won't trust the design. You have to let it breathe."

Tanishka stopped, her needle poised in mid-air. She looked at his hand—large, strong, and surprisingly steady as it supported her work. She looked up at him, seeing the "Greek God" not as the untouchable billionaire the media portrayed, but as a man who clearly understood the heavy burden of maintaining perfection.

"Since when did the 'arrogant' Reyansh Mehara become an expert on the soul of silk?" she asked, a small, tired smile finally tugging at the corners of her lips.

"I’m not an expert on silk," he admitted, his dark gaze meeting hers in the dim light of the studio. "But I am an expert on carrying weight that no one else sees. You’ve been doing this alone in this room for three days, Tanu. The Nandas are our allies now. That means you don't have to carry the stress of this entire show on your own. We are part of the same foundation now."

It was the first time he had used her nickname without even a hint of his usual sarcasm. It was a subtle shift, a tiny crack in the icy exterior he presented to the world, but to Tanishka, it felt like the first real brick in a bridge of friendship.

The Inner Circle’s Watchful Eyes

While Reyansh and Tanishka found their slow rhythm in the atelier, the bond between the two families was thickening in other parts of the hotel. Downstairs in the private lounge, the "Monster" and the "Shaitaan" were sharing a rare moment of absolute stillness. Aryan (AV) had his encrypted tablet open, but his eyes were fixed on Zyra as she meticulously sketched out a mock-up of the front-row seating chart.

"You’re staring again, Aryan," Zyra said softly, not looking up from her work.

"I’m monitoring my immediate surroundings for potential threats," he countered, though his voice lacked the clinical coldness he used with his employees.

"You’re monitoring me," she teased, finally lifting her head to look at him. "The gala is going to be perfect. Tanu is a creative genius, and your security tech-grid is... well, it’s terrifyingly efficient. Why don't you try being a 'Majnu' for just five minutes and tell me what you think of these floral arrangements for the lobby?"

AV looked at the high-resolution photos of white roses and exotic orchids on her phone. "They’re flowers, Zyra. They’ll be beautiful for three days and then they’ll die." But then, seeing the slight pout forming on her face, he let out a short sigh. "They’re elegant. They suit the Nanda grace perfectly. Are you satisfied now?"

Zyra beamed at him, and for a fleeting moment, the "Monster" CEO actually looked like a man who was perfectly happy to be defeated by his "Shaitaan."

Nearby, Aju was leaning against a marble pillar, watching the interaction with a knowing smirk. He turned to Mira, who was busy organizing the final press passes and guest credentials. "See that? Even the ice king is melting. I give it another week before Reyansh starts asking Tanu for her opinion on his tie colors."

A Shared Silence at 3:00 AM

Back in the penthouse, the antique clock on the wall struck 3:00 AM. Tanishka finally stepped back from the mannequin, her eyes burning with a mixture of fatigue and satisfaction. She reached instinctively for her coffee cup, only to find the liquid stone cold and bitter.

Before she could even let out a sigh of disappointment, Reyansh reached into a small thermal bag he had brought in earlier and pulled out a fresh, hot cup. The aroma of roasted beans filled the room—it was a specific, dark roast blend he knew she preferred.

"How did you even—?" she started, taking the warm cup from him.

"I have my ways of acquiring information," he said, leaning back against the drafting table and watching her. "Drink it. Then you’re going to the executive suite I’ve booked for you upstairs. You aren't driving back to the Nanda house this late; the Mumbai roads aren't as quiet as they look at this hour."

"Is that a royal command, Mr. Mehara?" she asked, the steam from the cup warming her tired face.

"It’s a suggestion... from a friend," he replied softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Tanishka paused, the word 'friend' hanging in the air between them like a promise. It wasn't the sudden, fiery romance of a TV serial or the manufactured drama of a movie. It was a slow, steady, and incredibly grounded realization. She looked at this man whom the rest of the world feared and respected as a cold "King," and she realized that, in this quiet room, she wasn't afraid of him at all.

"Okay, 'friend'," she said, emphasizing the word with a tired but genuine smile. "But only if you promise to stop calling the hem 'promising' and start calling it 'brilliant' when the lights finally go up."

Reyansh let out a short, dry laugh—a sound so rare and genuine that it made Tanishka’s heart skip a beat. "Don't push your luck, Tanu. Brilliant is a word for the night of the show. For now, we’ll settle for 'not terrible'."

She rolled her eyes at him, but the warmth spreading through her chest had nothing to do with the coffee. As they eventually walked out of the atelier together to the elevators, the silence between them was no longer filled with the sharp tension of two strangers, but the comfortable, solid weight of an alliance that was slowly, carefully turning into something real.
