The bell chimed softly as Aria and Virel stepped into Page Turner Books & Media, one of San Azura’s oldest bookstores.
Warm lighting reflected off polished shelves lined with paper books, graphic novels, and collector editions.
Virel smiled.
“Still smells like books.”
Aria laughed.
“That’s because they programmed the ventilation system to smell like books.”
“Best upgrade ever.”
The couple wandered separate aisles.
A few minutes later, Aria peeked around a shelf.
“What did you find?”
Virel held up a manga volume.
The cover showed neon-lit streets, towering holograms, and a courier racing through the rain.
“Cyberpunk.”
Aria raised an eyebrow.
“You live in a cyberpunk city.”
“It’s historical fiction now.”
Aria groaned.
“You’re impossible.”
She held up her own selection.
Brass gears.
Airships.
Mechanical wings.
Steam-powered cities.
“Steampunk?”
Virel smiled.
“You live in the future and read stories about people pretending to live in the past.”
Aria pointed dramatically.
“Exactly.”
As they approached the checkout area, a nearby kiosk illuminated.
RESONANCE Monthly Edition Ready
A pleasant voice spoke.
“Good afternoon, Aria and Virel. Your June editions are available.”
A stack of freshly printed magazines emerged from the kiosk.
Virel picked up his copy.
The cover featured championship swimmers crossing the finish line beneath the headline:
SWIM BEYOND LIMITS
Inside were articles about:
- endurance training
- aquatic rescue techniques
- adaptive fitness technologies
- local community events
Aria examined hers.
The same issue number.
The same editorial.
The same cover.
But her personalized sections included:
- creative wellness
- community design projects
- rehabilitation technology
- art and culture
She smiled.
“They added three pages about aquatic garden architecture.”
Virel nodded.
“They added six pages about swim analytics.”
“Of course they did.”
The cashier glanced over.
“Returning last month’s issue?”
Aria handed over her magazine.
The cashier fed it into a recycling slot.
A display appeared.
Recovered Material: 98.7%
Ready For Future Print Production
Virel watched the process.
“So that magazine might become next month’s issue?”
“Or a cookbook.”
“Or a gardening guide.”
“Or another RESONANCE.”
Aria tucked her manga under one arm and her new magazine under the other.
“Different stories.”
Virel held up his cyberpunk manga.
“Different stories.”
Then he nodded toward her steampunk volume.
“But somehow we always end up in the same bookstore.”
Aria slipped her hand into his.
“That’s because you’re my favorite genre.”
For once, Virel had no comeback.
If you lived in the San Azura what would your personalized issue of RESONANCE include? Swimming? Space travel? Gardening? Robotics? Something else?
